What a pisser! I was born and raised in Fountain Valley! I just bought a beautiful Condo here in Palm Springs! But no this couldn’t have been a built-in model. The appliance Gods can be very mean! Hope someone on here can save it!

Sorry for the small pictures

I don’t think this is 1962. Looks like early 1970s.

The wrapping does not look like it is original.  I don't think Sears in the 70s had that thin-weave padding nor would they have taped the wrap to the machine...

Is this a D&M or a Whirlpool product?

Attempting to Contact Owner . . .!

Though her ad requests ' text only', I do not text, (don't even own a cell phone). I left a very early morning voice message, and hope I get a response. This would be a nice little drive, not a Kitchenaid as I hoped for, but a nice substitute if my wife is happy.

Hope I receive a response!

Ken, it's a Whirlpool.  I had an Inglis-branded version of a dishwasher like this at one point.

That is the exact console we had on our 69 D&M built, Roto Rack when growing up.  It's odd to see it installed precariously like that.

I too am questioning the authenticity of the shrink-wrap and foam padding.  This most likely came in a a cardboard box, with corner "L" pieces to protect the corners and stabilize the box.  There would be no reason to wrap the dw in plastic.  There would probably have been a single sheet of plastic covering just the top.

D&M

This is a D&M, code 587 references D&M/Frigidaire.

How cool! I've never seen a rear-panel model! Good luck with your purchase, that'll be so fun!

That looks a great deal like the Kenmore DW my Aunt Doris got in the summer of '68. We were visiting them, and went to Sears with her when she bought it. My cousin Melanie (age 5 at the time) kept saying I like it, I like it, I like it! for several days. She still remembers its arrival.

It's SUPPOSED to be mine . . .?

. . .we'll see, though. Just spoke to the lady who's selling it for a client, and she says she will ask the owner to hold it till I can make the drive down from the Bay Area in a week or two. She is a visiting nurse, and it belongs to one of the patients she attends. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Unless you pre-pay for it.....

Well, lets just say, I wish you the best.  I hope you get it.

Good luck with your new dishwasher. I hope the seller is honest and everything goes well for you. It's nice to see someone appreciate an item like this.

Thanks, Travis!

I am trying to arrange a Paypal payment. A co-worker, who lives in SoCal and goes home on the weekend, may be able to retrieve it for me.

The lady handling the transaction has a long disused Paypal account, she will try to figure out how to use it. Her elderly clients do not likely know what Paypal is! I hope it all works out.

yes, be very cautious

I was a victim of identity fraud just yesterday.
Chase sent me a fraud alert, and as I was speaking with them, whom ever was trying to change my address to Brooklyn NY on my credit card was calling back on another Chase line still trying after they had spent $3,000.oo at a Best Buy in Brooklyn. They were tracing the call.
I immediately notified Trans union, my other cards, and my bank.

Could have been a store display model originally and eventually sold long after the original box etc were long gone. It's cool though.

Kenmore Roto Rack

The dishwasher was around the 1970 Era. They washed like heck, but was loud as hell. If you had a open floor plan, there was no escaping the roar. On the plus side, they used plenty of water, and could pretty much handle anything.

Last Of The D&M Built KM TLing DWs

combo52's profile picture

It is around the last of these TL portable D&Ms. About the only good thing I can say about it is the TLers were a lot less likely to leak than the front loading models. And as far a top loading portables go these were fairly quiet in operation because of the double wall tub and some models actually had sound insulation as well.

A Couple of Questions

It looks like I will be getting this dishwasher. Either my co-worker will pick it up over one of the next couple weekends while he is at home, or else on the next Saturday that I have no class, I will drive down myself.
I am taking the California Master Gardeners course, and that means an 8-hour class each Saturday from early January to mid-June, with only 3 Saturdays off. At work, I am accused of being the only one in Boulder Creek growing vegetables. My next Saturday off is Mothers Day weekend, so I may just make a long trip and give my wife her Mothers Day gift.

I have never owned a top loader, and have some questions:

Does it heat the water itself?
Does it have a fan and or heat to dry the dishes?
Is it very roomy, considering it is a top-loader?
Will I be sorry I made this purchase? ; )

Sorry for the inquisitiveness, but, you know . . .

Some possible answers

roto204's profile picture
I had the front-load portable version of this, so I'll infer that it's similar feature-wise. (If that's not the case, someone who has had this beast can chime in.)

- Does it heat the water itself?

Yes, if you select the 150-degree wash option, it will pause to raise the temperature to the target temp. The model I had didn't use a time-out, so if you put tap-cold water in, it would sit there and wash away until, three hours later, you finished the cycle and had steaming-hot water. :-)

- Does it have a fan and or heat to dry the dishes?

Both.

- Is it very roomy, considering it is a top-loader?

That depends on your definition of "roomy." The bottom rack is competent, and lacks a tower. The tine spacing may defeat your ability to put cutting boards or cookie sheets along the sides.

The circular top-rack can be capacious if loaded carefully; in my testing of my Roto-Rack against other competitors, I usually only have to omit one or two small items. Securing plastics can be challenging. You'll learn to load it the way one weaves a basket, to interleave and secure lighter items. :-)

- Will I be sorry I made this purchase? ; )

It's a vintage appliance, subject to aging, part failures, and the eventual outcomes of earlier engineering designs that might have been abandoned for a reason. Magic Eight Ball says, "Unclear at this time." Enjoy it in good health, until it's not enjoyable anymore. I wish you all the best. ;-)

Ibuzzard - did you get the machine?  I'm dying to see inside it 'cuz I really want to see if this is a Roto-Rack.... LOL

Turqoise, yes, I got it

I will try to post up photos over the weekend. I am a bit of a tech-tard, and will ask the wife to assist me. It is a split roto-rack. It is apparently new, had had plenty of bangs and bruises from being stored in a garage for years., but cleaned up nicely. It's build quality leaves something be desired, notwithstanding the "Sears Best " decal still on the control panel. My wife is being open-minded about a toploader, but I promised I'd keep searching for a Kitchenaide portable, maybe a KDS58 or so. In a few years, when we remodel, she'll have the built-in KDS20 aitting in my shop.

I also picked up that 1965 GE Spacesaver that functionalart posted a link to, and I just got the original literature in the mail today from the previous owner. We totally disassembled and cleaned it, have been running it since Sunday, will install it this weekend, hopefully, if I can get some help from my son. Will tryto post pgotos of it, as well.

Steve
