Very Nice

I totally agree this is about the best ref from the 60s, these bottom freezer GEs are light years ahead of Frigidaire in performance.

And it even has the cool auto-fill Ice-Maker system.

Thanks, Allen

I am going to look closely into this one, it's in my neck of the woods!

Beautiful. Why don't manufacturers make appliances today with some style to them like that?

Damn, and a left hinge one to boot. If it where closer, I'd get it in a heartbeat.

Oh how I wish that picture was backwards.

I'd be dropping everything and going after this fridge if the hinges were on the other side.

Steve, I hope you get it.  You can't do better, unless you need the larger, taller version.

Ibuzzard--make that trip!

I'm from Monterey originally--and it's killing me to be so far from there right now--would LOVE to go look this one over, even though I'm not all that into GE….a left hinge door is just about enough to convince me to go, though!

Is that a Leave It to Beaver Frig, from the later seasons of the show?

Thanks, Allen!

I'm trying to make arrangements to drive down on Sunday to pick it up. Hope my wife is as happy as I am with it, since it is a bit undersized, and no water or ice in the door. I think water is overrated . . . If I can, I'll post some interior photos.

Steve

The GE refrigerator on "Beaver" is an earlier model; I think a '60 or '61. . The one for sale has different handles; the handle on the one on the show was along the edge of the ref. door, making for a sleeker look.

Thanks Tom.

That handle on the early 60s GE looks like a 70s Frigidaire handle.

Steve…YAAAAAAY!!!

funktionalart's profile picture
So happy that these posts of sale items work out sometimes. Hope the GE works well and can give you years of service. And yeah….ice and water in the unit are overrated. It takes no time to fill ice trays by hand, we've almost all gotten lazy about that with newer boxes. Lack of water plumbing in the fridge is also a blessing to me…one less thing to go wrong or to rust out the chassis...

Cool GE Ref

This GE ref Has auto fill Ice Tray, there is no reason to have to fill and spill water trying to fill ice trays.

Picking It Up Sunday . . .

The fridge is at a home the absentee owner is remodeling in Pebble Beach. Should be nicely cared for, as it's had only one owner prior to the new owners purchase of the home, he says it is spotless! Again, thanks to Allen!

Got it, Allen . . .

. . . I thank you, my wife thanks you, . . . She absolutely loves it, especially the early edition of an ice maker! We received all the original literature in the mail today, forgot to ask for it Sunday.

We spent over five hours cleaning and polishing it, and I cleaned up decades of dirt and cobwebs from the coil, compressor, etc.. It spent two years in Santa Barbara before it came to Pebble Beach. New owners bought the house and are remodeling, so all new appliances. There was no access to water, so the ice maker has not been used after it came north in 1967. I briefly tested the pump motor to assure it works (it does), but did not run it long,as there is no water connected yet. We have been running the fridge since Sunday to assure everything works beforehand, will install it over the weekend. Photos to come, hopefully. Again, many thanks!

Steve--glad it's happened for you guys!

funktionalart's profile picture
I was just hoping you didn't get all the way down to Monterey and meet with disappointment! One thing I would recommend before you hook water supply to the icemaker--if it has been unused for 49 years it'd be a wise thing to have some new gaskets/seals on it before trying it out. Not sure exactly what the inlet looks like, but I'm sure someone up here could guide you through precautionary measures!

Self Filling Ice Tray Ice Maker

combo52's profile picture

Glad you got this neat ref and are giving it a good home.

There is no pump for the IM but rather a solenoid operated inlet valve, the water flows into the ice tray under your homes water pressure.

I would not do anything to the valve at this point, just connect to a cold water line [ you can install an inline water filter if you want better tasting ice ] Do be perpaired to shut down the water if the inlet valve drips or does not shut off at all when you start using this cool feature.

On your NEW KM Top Loading DW, I loved your comment on the build quality being less than great, to me that is the understatement of the year, LOL. Yes I would keep looking for that vintage Kitchenaid DW, or at least a Whirlpool.

The good thing about a portable D&M built DW is you will probably catch any leaking early since you have to move it to use it, and it will be easy to get rid of when it quits.

Thanks, John . . .

As for the DW, The outer cabinet is really the cheapest of painted sheetmetal, though it polished up nice enough. The pressure release button on the hose connector set is sticky, had to lubricate it and work it. The sliding plastic collar on same has a crack. The pivoting soap dispenser is the thinnest, cheapest you can imagine, and is not long for this world, I think. If you bumped a spoon against it, it may easily be broken. That's not much of an exaggeration.

John, can you or anyone else decipher the build date from the serial number? It is as follows:

587 71460

We'd also love to find any literature for it, like owners manual, repair diagrams, etc. My wife is trying real hard to like it, or at least to tolerate it.

I guess I should have started a new thead over in the Imperial section to ask my questions. Thanks for your input.

Regards,
Steve
