I purchased a SQ/ Huebsch washing machine based on this forum. I don't really see a big difference in cleaning/ stain removal from my previous machine.

With regards to a dryer: I need something that doesn't take too long to dry,(as the SQ has a slower spin cycle), is white and not the most expensive. I have read mixed reviews about the high heat in SQ dryers, and they are $1500 after tax (on sale).

What is recommended?

Thank you very much!

Really any WP made one or GE will probably suit you just fine. They are very reliable and simple machines at good prices.

Thanks for the reply. Good to know there are cheaper machines that are good. I will consider the SQ if it really is that much better than the others.

We're a large family, and I do about 20 loads a week, so it needs to last a while.

Thanks again.

Welcome! The SQ will have a longer warranty if anything but those WP dryers just keep going...especially the older design ones which come in many variations....WP, Maytag, Kenmore, Amana, etc.

I'm looking to buy a new machine, as delivery is needed, so Craigslist is not an option- and that's the only place for older models.

There are way too many choices, and I did already go to an appliance store to see some, and spent a few hours online reading.

I kind of need the list narrowed down.

Thanks

Cool...well they still make the older design, I just meant as opposed to the ones that match the Cabrio's, etc. They are cheaper too.

Best bet for the $$$ is a Whirlpool dryer with the lint screen on the top right as opposed to a lint screen inside the drum. As long as it has the pullout lint screen on the top of the cabinet, it is a Whirlpool dryer. Many different names (Whirlpool, Maytag, Roper, Admiral, Amana and Kenmore). Don't expect any dryer made today to last a long time doing 20 loads a week. Also make sure your venting is clean and direct.

I'd *avoid* the Maytag and Frigidaire dryers shown above in pictures; I've had experiences with both, the Frigidaires tend to run VERY hot and are prone to lint buildup and lint fires (nearly had a fire on ours that was only a couple years old) and we currently have the Maytag shown above and it dries at a low temperature, but is noisy and painfully slow- usually 1 1/2 hours for a load, and ours is gas. I'd highly recommend the Whirlpool/Kenmore/Maytag dryers with the top mounted pull out filter- the same basic design has been around for many years (50?) and they are quiet, fast, and very reliable. They dry at a moderate temperature and overall just work. I would imagine a new low end model can be had for around $300. Higher end models may run up to $600 or so with more features and temperature options. Also definitely avoid the Whirlpool/Kenmore versions of the cabrio/oasis line, they are less reliable and prone to problems.

This is from a montreal dealer.. 7 cu ft, Whirlpool made, basic dryer.. I'd go for that... Cheap to run, cheap to buy and when it crokes, cheap to replace

Take the advice provided by those who have recommended the Whirlpool makes with lint screen access on top.  It's a tried and true design that should provide lasting service.

As was stated above, any dryer with lint screen accessible from the top, regardless of brand, is made by Whirlpool.  Just look for a new dryer with that feature at the best price, whether it's an Admiral, Amana, Estate, Kenmore, Maytag, Roper or Whirlpool (or under their Canadian badges if they happen to be different from those sold in the U.S.).

Post# 880978 , Reply# 15   5/16/2016 at 03:56 (2,873 days old) by brucelucenta ()

If you do not care about having the dryer perfectly match the washer, a whirlpool made dryer with the lint screen on top of the machine wins hands down above anything else. Make sure it is the largest capacity you can get. It can be a Kenmore, Whirlpool, Roper, Estate or any other dryer name as long as it is made by Whirlpool and has the lint screen on top with the little plastic door or pull out handle. Those dryers have always been the absolute BEST and longest lasting dryers with the fewest problems. They also are quite roomy inside and dry quicker and have very little problems with air flow restriction or slow drying time. Just always make sure you have absolutely no restriction of air flow to the outside vent such as a kinked vent hose, ect... and you should never have a problem. I am not even going to bad mouth the other brands that some have suggested, whirlpool made dryers of this kind are so far superior they are the only choice when it matters not, if the dryer matches the washer.

Linked at the bottom is the top filter dryer, everybody here is raving about, for sale in Montreal.

Directly below is a delivery service.
montreal.craigslist.ca/app/555011...

As stated these dryers are sold under a number of name plates and model/feature versions.
Here reviewed.com is underwhelmed by what they experienced using this dryer design:
"The Whirlpool WED4915EW is better than 6% of the dryers we tested.
...an exceptionally affordable dryer with familiar features. It's a nostalgia trip, an anachronism. The reality isn't as kind as your memory, though: In our tests, most cycles got too hot, failed to remove enough moisture, or both. Consumers looking for their mother's (or grandmother's) dryer will find it in this Whirlpool."

Here it is new as an Amana at Bestbuy Canada for $349

Drying results

Going through some reviewed.com tests, it seems pretty consistent throughout the brandings that the mechanical timer models all had the same "downfalls": Higher then average temperature, inconsistent moisture removal and often a lack of an actual low temperature cycle with most test still way beyond 130F on the delicate setting.

However, first of all, these flaws really can inpact on your experience, or you just don't notice them. It's like with jeans: People who wear skin-tight will recognize any shrinkage, baggy jeans wearers won't.
If you think they might impact your experience, they tested a digital control model with the top mounted filter which, as far as I understand it, dried more consistently (though not a lot cooler on the normal cycle) and had a pretty cool delicate cycle.
And it retaled at something like 600 bucks. Not exactly really cheap, but not exactly overly expensive.

I was using craigslist because i thought you had a very limited budget, and i also thought Canada had crazy high prices on appliances after i heard what you paid for your SQ TL.
Looking into it i see there are some deals to be had.
Best Buy Canada or Sears Canada both have fast free shipping to Montreal. Here are their dryer offerings linked below, BB at bottom.
20 loads a week makes me wonder why you went with a top loading machine. Sounds like you have a family.
Not many here seem to have families with kids at home btw. Turns out i do, and turns out last year we bought my mother a SQ FL set. That said, at your laundry volume one of the super-sized machines may be the ticket: LG, Kenmore, Samsung, Maytag/Whirlpool etc.
Here is a selection of 8.8 c.u. ft machines at Sears liked by reviewed.com:

I wanted a TL because I have a family. I need to be able to stop the cycle in the middle to add something in, and to allow overnight soaking etc., even though the machine is smaller than a typical FL.The SQ washing machine was cheaper than the dryer price I wrote above.

I was also looking for a machine that would last many years of heavy duty use.
There are only 2 store chains that carry Speed Queen, and it's quite expensive here. There are sales to be had in other brands.

I also cloth diaper, so it's easier in that sense as well.

I was actually avoiding the lint trap on top, and I didn't think those were better machines, as only the cheapest ones have them.

Why then, don't the high end ones have it on top as well?
I don't need the machines to match, even though it's nicer when it does. But the difference in price is quite dramatic.

I'll get the top lint trap, as that is the general consensus here, and it narrows down the list a lot, so makes it easier to choose one.

Henene4- which machine did you have in mind?

Thanks so much everyone for your suggestions. I really appreciate your detailed replies.

The cheap Amana/ Whirlpool listed above only rated better than 6% of dryers. I'm not looking to ruin clothing, due to the high heat, as I dry plenty of clothing, and not only towels.

The lint screen on top/ digital version seems to be the Cabrio, and based on an above comment and some online reviews, they are not the greatest either.

I'm reading reviews on all the machines mentioned plus.

It's a shame when professional reviewers use wrong terminology and/or don't understand machine components.  The sensors at back of the drum to which they refer as temperature sensors are, of course, moisture sensors, not temperature sensors.

1) Here is the Cabrio (Henene4 posted) for sale at Best Buy:
www.bestbuy.ca/en-CA/product/whir...

2) Here is a step up from that in the Cabrio line (in size anyway), for less $$, at Sears:
www.sears.ca/product/whirlpool-88...

3) And here i think is the value champ. This looks to be the same Cabrio as the first, branded as a Kenmore, hugely discounted at Sears for $519 (sale price lasts until May 18th):
www.sears.ca/product/kenmore-md-7...

pics are in order 1-3

The reason I supposed that model was the lower reached temperature while still having the top-mounted lint filter design. The same drying engine with better control.
There's a simmilar model without steam, but can't find it for Canada. I don't think your usage situation requires steam.

I would suggest weighing the on-line reviews carefully if they're being provided predominantly by non-professionals and/or owners of the subject dryers who never bothered to read the instructions.  It is those types who skew the numbers toward predominantly negative reviews.

Many of us here have read a fair number of negative reviews on front-load washers made by people who don't have the slightest concept of proper use and care and complain about things like mildew and musty smells, clothes not getting clean and socks getting sucked into the pump, yet virtually none of us have those same complaints and are happy with our machines because we know how to use them.

I am confident the same is true for reviews on misused dryers, dishwashers, vacuum cleaners or any other household item that requires a certain amount of maintenance for proper performance, and common sense with regard to expectations of their capabilities.

As for so-called professional reviews, such as Consumer Reports, they are worth about as much as the paper they're printed on.

Reviews

The reviews text is indeed mostly useless. However, for example a reason why I like reviewed.com, if you just take the real and not somehow factored numbers out of the tests, you can pretty well compare them. I mean, at least they are all mostly consitent on their testing procedures.

We bought the 8.8 cf Kenmore/Whirlpool to go with the earlier 28102 washer we got a year earlier after I got my first decent tax refund a year after buying this house. It has the inside filter but works great, auto dry works nice and it's huge and quiet. It also has saved us a bit on the electric bill as it drys way more at once and only runs till it hits the set dry level if you set it properly.
Can't say how long it will live but got a great deal at the Sears outlet store just like we did with the washer before it.
Highly recommend it, no problems yet, just works well and seems well built.
They have versions with steam dry and everything else if you need it, we don't so saved a bit more.

I've never had any major issues with my GE gas dryer with the lint filter in the door opening.  18 years old now.

Then you have been very very lucky because they are trouble prone from the "premier" gas dryers they used to make back in the '60's down to the new ones they make now.

Maybe so, I've only had to replace the plastic front bearing (plastic) twice in all these years and the rear once.  Still does an excellent job, especially after the clothes come out of the Asko's high speed spin.  Knock wood, Mother's Maytag has only needed the blower fan replaced once in 22 years.
