I have a 14 year old Kenmore TL washer and when I use it you get a faint smell of hot grease. I figure it's time for a replacement before it dies on me. I am not a fan of the new HE washers and prefer a traditional washer with out all the bells and whistles. I am leaning toward a Speed Queen TL washer but wanted some opinions if you guys still think its one of the best machines out there. Thanks in advance for your comments and suggestions.

It's the closest you'll get to behaving like your Kenmore and it will use just as much water.  It might even give you true hot instead of dumbed down hot.

Pay extra for a model that provides a second rinse option.  You'll probably want to keep that switch flipped to the "On" position as long as you own the machine.   That's what we did when we had an Amana brand* Speed Queen clone.

*Amanas are no longer made by Speed Queen.

Kroywen..I'm not trying to sway you into a FL'er BUT, I'm 60 years old and I've only used TL'ers until recently. I was scared to make a change, how could my clothes be cleaner or even as clean and how could they possiably be rinsed well in a machine that uses such a reduced amount of water. I'm a crazy stickler about clean and well rinsed clothes. .I can smell the slightest hint of body odors and I can feel detergent residue. ..I can say my new Whirlpool Duet 95 series gives me beautifully clean and well rinsed. Clothes. I LOVE this machine and am so happy I took the risk. I will never again go back to a TL'er, what would be the point when I'm getting perfect results in my FL'er....just saying...think about it. Cheryl

Thank you for your input, you read so much today about problems people have with new washing machines that my biggest concern is reliability. Whither TL or FL I just want a machine that will give me years of service with out any problems. My current TL is a Kenmore which was made by Whirlpool and never had a service call on it in 14 years but when you read customers reviews on the new Whirlpool's, Maytage's and GE washers, and all the problems it makes you wonder about the reliability of the newer machines. From what I have read on this web site Speed Queens seem to be the most reliable or that is the impression I get. Thanks again for your comments.

Go for the FL SQ. It is by far the best machine on the market. John L. with his 50 years in the appliance business would agree with this.

You might want to find a friend who has a newer front load machine and try it out to see what you think. I too crossed over a couple of years ago to a front load machine and have never been sorry. If you choose to continue with a top load machine, the clear choice is a speed queen. It is the ONLY machine that operates like a traditional top load machine when set properly. The rest try and use the same amount of water as a front load machine to wash and rinse clothes, which is impossible.

No fear

I was dead-set against HE washers, so I bought a SQ TL, and I do love it. But I rarely use it now. As a late middle age crisis thing, I bought the matching SQ FL as a kind of play toy, expecting to not like it and re-sell it. Much to my surprise, I found that it gets my clothes cleaner than the TL. The detergent and water savings are phenomenal. Generally a couple tablespoons, maybe 3 for a huge heavily soiled load in hard water, is the maximum detergent.

It takes a little time and patience to get through a learning curve on loading it and dosing detergent. But you'll never turn back.

I have a crack pot theory that the people who complain about their front loaders not getting clothes clean are overloading it, and/or using too much detergent.

The idea is to fill the drum full with clothes, but loosely, not packed, so that once they're all wet, they all rise and drop onto the drum in an ellipse, without any garments being caught in the middle doing nothing but going around and around in place. The washing action is more effective than a TL. When the soaking wet garment drops down onto the drum, it forces soapy water through it, just like the ancient practice of slapping sopping wet garments on a smooth stone. But if it's overloaded, the garments don't fall so there's no washing action, and if there are too many suds, that cushions the fall and also inhibits the flow of water through the garments, so the load does not get clean.

But the bottom line is that although at first it looks like there's no water in there, once you get the hang of it, there's better washing action than a TL with less wear on your clothes.

SQ TL

A load of whites (towels mixed with socks and underwear) can get cleaned as long as you don't overload it.

Speed Queen

is the BEST top loader on the market today and mine is seven years old.
Mike

If you want a top loader Speed Queen is the one to get, my brother and mother both have them and several friends have them as well.

I know that of all the top load machines made now, speed queen is the ONLY one that is any good at all. Only reason I bought a new washer and dryer is to be able to wash a king size down filled comforter. If I were to buy a top load machine, speed queen is the one I would buy. I just needed the capacity and it would not be able to wash this comforter. I have tried without success.

I will check into a FL Speed Queen Washer. Does it require a platform to raise it higher like so many FL machines do? For me I think reaching in would be easier for me to retrieve my clean laundry. I am glad to hear that so many of you praise the Speed Queen,s. Thanks for your input.
