YUK!!! Looks a lot like an early Orbital machine, like 88-89 or thereabouts, as it's not a Fabric-Matic. I prefer this all-black control panel styling the least...even the early-80's ivory-button machines are cool and definitely worth grabbing in my opinion. But not this thing!

Greg, care to comment? ;-)

Re: Transmission:

Austin, these are actually still the Helical Drive Transmission, on this Washer. They mainly renovated the Dryers, to give the Larger Drum, using the back similar to WP/Kenmore's as the Bulkhead and bringing the Lint Filter to the front of the opening of the Drum.

Personally, I prefer the darker Buttons, to me the White Buttons look like they were an afterthought to me and I actually like this Dark Brown Background, especially over the next renovation, using the Black Background, on the start of the Orbital Transmission Washers.

what's the difference between the orbital and helical units? I have an LA511; faux wood panel and white buttons. not a pretty washer, but the best i've ever come across.

Only problem with our 511 is that it likes to shimmy and shake a bit excessivly.

Actually, this washer could be either an orbital (fast stroke, smaller, white agitator) or the original longer, slower stroke & larger blue agitator. I have a similar two-speed washer (slow stroke tranny) in storage that I need to find a home for. It's MINT! Mine is a standard capacity blue porcelain tub.

All Newton-made Maytag washers were Helical Drive - that only refers to the method of transfering power from the agitator drive to the spin drive.

This dryer is the same Big Load dryer Maytag had been making since 1975 with a different panel design.

Steve, in case you didn't know, I have seen "traditional" helical-drive machines with these control panels before, but they were Fabric-Matics. This one isn't, so I'm almost positive it's an Orbital. Looks can be deceiving, though. Only a picture of the interior will tell; I'm thinking white or blue PowerFlex agitator.

Hi John, actually, the Orbital transmission still uses the helical drive pulley, but it agitates at around 160 OPM on high speed and has a much shorter stroke than the earlier machines. It's still a touch slower than a direct-drive Kenmore's agitation (which is 180 OPM on high), however, and still spins at 618 RPM on high speed like the others. Your 11-series machine with the ivory buttons has the long-stroke transmission and agitates at 63 OPM on high speed. The AMP and early helical-drive Gyratator-equipped machines agitated at 54 OPM on high speed until they changed the transmission to 63 OPM when the Washpower automatics and Power-Fin agitator were introduced in 1966. I believe the Orbital transmission was introduced in 1988 along with the PowerFlex agitator.

Interestingly enough, the Orbital transmission can also replace a bad transmission in an older machine, provided that you install a PowerFlex agitator as well to accomodate the stroke change, as the Power-Fin *supposedly* puts stress on the transmission. However, I've been using a Power-Fin in my Orbital 'Tag going on 2 years with no problems yet.

Hope this helps.

My mom had a 90 Maytag with fast agitation but with the blue agitator... Weird, huh? Well it sure moved some clothes around.

cool, thanks.

Now, what's the difference between the PowerFin [turquoise] and the PowerFlex. i've only known the Powerfin.

Re: Actually:

The Maytag Washers of this era, did have the original Transmission Type in them, until the Orbital Transmission became available, then when the older Transmission needed to be replaced, it was replaced with an Orbital Transmission. That is when these Maytag Washer had the Orbital Transmissions in them, not from Factory.

Peace and Maytag Washing fun, with either Transmission, Steve

My mother bought a new set in 1987, and still uses them to this day.The belts were replaced, and a little oil, and Vavavavoom!!!The funny thing is, the neiggbor next door bought a new Maytag(on my recamend at the time in 88'), and it has the fast sroke, newer console, and white agitator, and from what I was told, a self cleaning lint filter.I never did understand where they would put it in one of these.

Where were they building the fast stroke orbital machines if they were not being built in Newton, Ia? Do you know where they built the 4000 Neptune that I had at one point?
