When growing up my next door neighbors had chest freezer with 2 compartments, like this one.   Come to think of it I think my grand parents had one too.   Anyway, the smaller compartment was a super cold quick / deep freeze section with a much lower temp for faster / deeper freezing.

This was Maytag's first deep freezer.  I believe it was introduced around 1949/1950, similarly to when the Dutch Oven was introduced.

This was not made in Newton but instead it was farmed out, but I forgot who Maytag got this freezer from.

It screams, "HEAVY".

I have one!

It's really heavy. The small compartment does absolutely nothing. It's basically a refrigerator pan sitting in a hole above the compressor. It may be to allow something to slowly defrost.

Someone go get it. They're relatively small and have a nice porcelain top.

Amana made this for them.

Ken,

You should know since you helped me get it.  It's an awesome very heavy freezer.  I think mine is larger.

Got one stashed away in the warehouse.  I have it on a furniture dolly to move it.  Definitely heavy.

I believe that enamel tray on the right side is for defrosting, it would be a bit warmer there over the compressor.
Someplace I have brochures and service lit for these.

I saw one of these earlier this year at an estate sale and I have no idea how they got it into the basement unless it was placed down there while the house was being built.  That thing was huge, and it was running.  The asking price was $50 obo if memory serves me right.

Such a beautiful freezer!

Wonder how many times the housewife put a couple of chickens or steaks into the "defrost chamber" during cocktail hour only to forget and find three weeks later?  Blah!!!
