Run Away, even MT had the good sense to close the factory that made these junky refs before MT went belly up.

We still work on several of these every month, but I think that we have turned the corner and the majority have finally been scraped.

Is this a

Frigidaire product?
My neighbor had to scrap an only 12 year old one just like the one Reba has in her kitchen on the tv show. Not the faux painted stainless 70's Hotpoint in the older episodes, the later shows with the curvy black handles.

Not a Frigidaire

This was made at Maytag's Galesburg IL plant. (I believe the plant they got with Admiral) This was the "platform" they created that was going to take over the refrigeration market. It was plagued with problems from the beginning. I had one of the first ones right after they were introduced. Needless to say it did not last very long without problems the whole time.

The doors had a congenital defect which kept them from being lined up completely. Something was always off. Sometimes it was the refrigeration system.

Is the thread title something that should be posted to damnyouautocorrect.com or have I missed a joke?

Model Previous to this one...

Is in my home, and I have nothing but GOOD things to say about it. It is a 1997 manufacture--and the ONLY problem I experience has to do with the plastic rail which holds the bulk ice container. This fridge is probably the best I've ever owned for reliability and satisfaction. Not to say there may not be dicey units out there now that they are closing in on 20 years of age…but I LOVE mine.

No Jenn-Air Refs were manufactured in Newton Iowa, that was MTs corporte office.

Allen your ref could be a Amana built ref or you are really lucky, if you post a picyure of the controls it is easy to tell which one you have.

I don't get that at all. **scratches head**

Or was that supposed to be for people who get really excited about refrigerators?

Allen that's a slightly older version of an Admiral SXS, it had nothing to do with Amana or any other manufacturer for that matter, these were know for being noisy, having lots of cheap plastic interior parts that break, failed defrost heaters, sized condenser fan motors, broken ref and freezer door liners around the screws, freezer & ref doors that slowly fill ice or water, but other than these problems many will run for 20 years or more if given good care.

The major with problem with Admiral refs was they were OK as $300-$400 Montgomery Ward or Admiral branded refs, but they were never in the same league as WP, GE, or even Amana.

Oh, now I get it.

Don't by a Wards defibrillator.

For a while there I was confused.  Thanks for clearing things up John.

Sticking up for the J-A...!!!!

Well, there had to have been SOME Admiral-manufactured reefers that were somewhat good even at that late-a-date, and to accompany the Jenn Aire cooking appliances as well as the dishwasher--just don't look in the laundry room, unless it was possible to get Jenn Aire there, too...

Yes,

Admirals ran fine, unaligned doors and all. They made all those 3 door Signature, Tappan, and Kelvinators too, with the separate ice compartments.
I can't even tell what the stickered job is. Amana? GE?

Funny! It looks a bit too new to be a Servel.

The only real problem I have with Admiral based refrigerators is that the door liners tend to break, where they are screwed to the metal door. The other problems mentioned are shared across the range of manufacturers.

Tappan and Kelvy are WCI/Electrolux  products,  don't think they were subbed to Admiral.

Yes, the stickered one is Amana.

Speaking for my own ref shown in #6 above...

funktionalart's profile picture
I bought it as I was quite impressed with its overall quality. I really did think it was probably an upmarket Amana.

The trim kit and acrylic panels alone set the original owner back several hundred bucks, I'm sure. I think he said they paid around $1600 for it in 1997. I got it for the princely sum of $50…and I've only replaced the condenser fan on it as soon as it came home.

No problems with interior door panels/cracks. No door alignment issues. It has a nearly-Subzero door closing feel/quality about it. Pretty nice for an Admiral! I will admit the freezer fan is on the loud-ish side, but not prohibitive to use near living room. Freezer is always reliably at -5, fridge always hold 37 degrees with no trouble.

No issues with ice buildup, defrost issues, etc. My gripe? 2 of 'em.

1) like all modern stuff, inside is way too plasticky for my taste, but that's the choice nowadays. Has been for quite a long time now. Although the Glass shelving is nice, I really like the old porcelain lined interiors and wire shelving. So my '63 Frigidaire stays!

2) Biggest gripe. The Ice dispenser. There's a crushed ice feature I love--but use it too much and the armature seems to push the bulk ice container forward toward the freezer door--causing chopping action to stop and no ice dropping. Happens after 1 or 2 glasses worth is made. Has to do with a broken stop on one of the 2 plastic guide rails/supports mounted to the side freezer wall. So I open the door, push it back in place and it's fine for a little while….It is a letdown, but nothing that would keep me from parting with the unit. And not enough to make me go online and buy a replacement, either.

It's ULTRA tidy after 20 years…not one bit of staining or discoloration inside, Love the nice brushed aluminum handles and trim--and black door gaskets/case paint. Freezer width is nice for a SxS…perfectly holds things as wide as a frozen pizza box. Unit Looks beautiful, works even better. Must admit, I am astonished to know it's a dolled up Admiral...
