From the same guys who sold the Maytag AMP washer.

Bobby you didn't take a good look around while you were there picking up your machine, did you?

That's it!

The EXACT set my grandmother had...the one I blame for my endless fascination with washing machines in general! LOL! I went to great lengths to describe this machine in a thread a long time ago. I would give my eyeteeth for this set! This brings back a flood of memories of my grandmother when I was a child! WOW! What a find!

Alas...I'm too far away...no shipping...and I have nowhere to put them. I really hope they find a happy home to care for them. :-)

No shipping, no days off, wedding approaching. Why do the good ones always come up at the worst possible times :-(

Yes, I want them. But I can't take 2 extra days off to go get them.

Now we're talking

These are close to me so this set is doable. Only a couple of hours to travel for pick-up. Too bad the dryer is gas, but I'm lucky to get any opportunities is this 'burg.

Aunt Bettie Jean used to have that washing machine!! I envied her. But we had a 1958 Frigidaire, so I was much better off. But at the time, I thought this machine was sooooooo modern and cool!!

Post# 135585 , Reply# 10   6/14/2006 at 13:39 (6,496 days old) by bobofhollywood ()

Yes, I did see those when I was there.

I had a pair exactly like them once, only my dryer was electric, and I had the matching Combination washer/dryer too, which was gas - all 3 in one laundry room.

I "saved" the same pair from the Krusher when I first started out collecting. After getting them home and looking under the hood, there was no saving them, they were way too far gone. I beheaded them and sent the rest to their ultimate desinty... I'd love to have this pair, but it appears there are many people going for it...

Don't Misunderstand me...They're nice..but I have no interest in them in case anybody else does.

Washer vs Dryer

I'm going to bid on them but I'll only be able to use the washer if I win. I don't have a gas hook-up, so I could make the dryer available to another member if someone is looking for it to complete a set or something.

This is a great set... Someone needs to get this. You will n

And it features a really cool high speed dryer. It has the desirable high input (37,000 btuh) MODULATING burner and will dry the heaviest load you can wash in about 30 minutes, yet is easy on the clothes. This was the best gas burner system (I know of) ever offered on any dryer. It also features an adjustable automatic cycle.

I had the '65 version of this same dryer and it worked great--this '63 is a much nicer looking unit though, IMO.

Tell me more about this modulating burner.

Sounds like it woud be akin to the Robershaw modulating (gas) oven-burner mechanical thermostat, where the flame size varied down to minimum bypass flame.

For our international friends, a typical gas burner for a dryer today is rated at 22,000 BTU/hr. Each stove-top burner on a cooker (as a size comparison) is 9,000 to 15,000 BTU/hr, with 12,000 being typical. A 12,000 BTU/hr air-conditioner can cool about three to four rooms (depending on climate) and time-of-day.

Modulating burners...

Once my dryer is up to temp, the modulating burner holds the outlet temp constant at 155 deg F +/- 1 deg. (as measured with a type J thermocouple).

The set point and operating temps for the modulation are adjustable, behind a factory seal.

Thanks Joseph for your post of your repair guide on these type of gas systems.
I think that this is such a good system. I have used this type of gas drying system before, and it is so much quicker, and it provides a great, even heat.
I think that GE's higher end gas dryers are using this type of system.
Anyone know of anyone else?
Brent

Joseph,
Do you by chance know what year Whirlpool stopped using this type of burner system?
I wonder why they stopped, and went to the common type's that are found now?
Brent

On modulating burners...

Whirpool/Kenmore stopped using these around 1970. I think there are two main reasons:

1) Cost. This hydraulic system is a lot more expensive than a bimetallic disc thermostat; and,

2) The reality that you don't need a lot of choices or control over the drying cycle: this system doesn't require user input, decisions or that you set any knobs. At a time when specmanship and more choices & knobs must be better, one setting that does it all couldn't possibly work. (Said tongue-in-cheek).

From what I understand, it controls the flame, like the way you control the flame on a gas stove to keep a certain temperature.

I am

According to mapquest, the town is 1 hour and 45 minutes away. I have no expectation of winning the auction so if I lose, I lose. I lose 90 percent of the auctions I bid on. All's fair in love and auctions. There's amost always some crazy nut that wants something more than you do and is willing to overpay for stuff on eBay. So, again, if I get outbid, I get outbid. And if someone here outbids me, a) No hard feelings and b) I'll be happy they stayed in the family.

This set was in our family for years and I loved the push button controls and the way it just worked. This set has been one of my dream sets to have. When I saw it posted on here and went to Ebay, I couldn't believe my eyes "a matching set". Well I will be picking the Lady's up tomorrow and they will be in their new home tomorrow evening along with more of their relatives :) Looks like a busy week ahead.

Yes it was a shocker, I was checking it to see if any bids were on it and there was none, I refreshed to check something else and the "BUY It Now" appeared. It was early afternoon when I checked.

BIN

The last time I looked at the listing was a 11:30 am yesterday and there was no BIN. Twarted again. I guess I'm destined to never own a vintage washer. I'm accepting my destiny. Congratulation and enjoy the set.

Where the BIN came in, as was totally sure it was not there when I posted the link. Guess sellers really want things O-W-U-T out before they move house.

Congrats to the winner, Versatronic, don't think of it as "thwarted", but just wasn't meant to be this time. Something is coming your way, I know it and it is going to be big!

Congrats Glenn! beautiful machines.

Versatronic, I was pulling for ya man. Maybe Glenn will consider your attempt, play with his new machines awhile, then offer them to you, or perhaps needs to make room for others he may have that will be in the way? Talk to him. You are such a good sport anyway. I just sold a Maytag A806, due to a posting on the club, someone who wanted one real bad and never had one. He is getting it now.

Thanks Steven and Laundress for the encouragement. Maybe next time. Lightedcontrols did offer to fix me up with an as-is 806 so perhaps I'll try to schedule a road trip to Virginia later this summer.

So the 700s DO have console lights! Neato! The 800 were just like that with a fluorescent light and manual water temp/level, 2nd rinse, and prewash controls. One model above that would be the Lady.
