They made a window unit in the early 50s with a semi hermetic compressor that used Freon 500...A REAL AC that blew ICE cold air! |

Hans,
I am 60 years old I remember when I was around 7-8 years old there were many window units running from the 50s. We had a "1/2 ton" Fedders. Gray with the Weather Wheel. You could refrigerate a room full of Beef when that machine was running. My Dad in his restaurant had a Console Carrier Freestanding in his Bar. (When you were proud to have on your signage "AIR CONDITIONED" outside. It had a Water Tower Cooling Unit on the roof and that unit kept your nipples hard on the hottest days. What a Beast that was. |

Gill, that is almost the exact (1949) Westinghouse fridge I grew up with. Ours was a model D9-49. The "acrylic" part of the handle broke after 20+ years of use, then the entire handle nearly pulled off after it became a garage fridge.
I wonder if that's due it it having been in everyday use long after most families had upgraded to frost free, and the door having been opened many thousands more times than similar models that are still out there today. |
