After much deliberation and two years of owning washing machines I wasn't completely happy with I bought myself a new Miele. It arrived on the 9th November so I've had a few days to try out the cycles. I have to say, it's an amazing machine. Very quiet, washes and rinses brilliantly, I've not needed to use the extra rinse at all, even with our very soft Scottish water.

Any questions, feel free to ask.

How much did it cost and where did you buy it from?

Is the load recognisiton any more advanced then the previous 2 load sizes/normal short system?

And how are cycle times over all?

The machine should've cost £1099 from Very but I got a discount. John Lewis are selling them for £899 just now I think.

Henene4,

The load recognition seems to be more advanced, yes. However, if using the short option a small load's wash time will only drop a little. I have the "degree of soiling" function switched on, basically after you've selected a wash the machine asks how dirty the load is. If you select heavy soil the machine adds a prewash and does deeper rinses. Both minimum iron and dark garments use distribution tumble for part of the wash. The most surprising thing for me was that the delicates cycle uses a low water level but very slow tumbles. The only niggle is the express wash just does one rinse although it fills with clean water before it drains the wash water. If you deselect the short option on the express wash you get 20mins of the intensive tumbles. I've still to try the shirts cycle with its pre ironing function.

Good to see you posting again PaulC.

One is intrigued by these new Miele washers. Do you feel build quality is a patch on the older models?

Though I don't own one, I looked at them at a local store today.

They don't feel like the 2 previous generations (late 1990s/early 2000s and the generation Wxxxx), but not in a negative way.

They still have the typical Miele "clunk" and weigh to them. But some things like the dial movement (which got way softer then either the old verry decisive or the newer not quite so click-ish dials) or the buttons (way smaller, way harder to press) have changed. The doors don't make this massive, typical metal Miele closing sound anymore, but still close shut just by "throwing" them closed and still make a verry satisfing and ensuring "thump" noise.

The tub appeas even more massive in capacity, durability and still manages to just look smooth and gentle.

Miele once again showed that they are open for change but stand true to their routes.

Welcome to the world of Miele washing! It changes everything. I'm still amazed at how clean everything is and the control they allow.

Lovely looking machine.

Do you miss the orange door button?

Aw, was a nice message to wake up to! Thank you!

To answer your question, the plastic parts don't feel as substantial as older models, the detergent draw doesn't feel quite as robust but it's still better than other manufacturers machines. As for the rest of the machine I can't see any major differences in quality. There are marked improvements in the wash action and rinse times. My Miele W1613 took ages to rinse, in fact it spent more time rinsing than washing, this is not the case now. My new machine spends less than a third of the cycle time rinsing.

Henene4, on paper the Miele drum is smaller than on the 12Kg Beko I had. Miele 65litre drum, Beko 71 litre drum, however, I was told by someone who works for Miele that Beko include the door boot as drum capacity where as Miele only measure the drum itself. In reality, I can get more in the drum of the Miele. I actually quite like the new buttons, I really like the touch screen for scrolling through the options and changing stuff in the settings menu.

aamassther, that's a gorgeous looking Miele you have!

richnz, I'm not actually missing the orange button, the orange highlight on the door kinda makes up for it.

I forgot to post a link to the instruction book, it gives you a good idea what the machine can do and explains the settings menu.

A really handsome machine you got there. Congratulations on your purchase!!!

Sometimes I wonder by myself if it really is worth it to paying the extra money for a Miele, then I get to work with someone else's "regular" washing machine and then all of a sudden I realise that it is definitely worth it, with regards to performance, build quality, just the reasuring sound of the solid "thud" it makes when closing the door, overall ease of use and look and feel to the machine.

Well once again congratulations!!

Do keep us posted with pics and vids.

Happy washing.

Regards.

Congratulations on your new machine!
I`ve had a Miele myself for about 12 years and wonder what I would repace it with if something seriously went wrong. It`s still going strong, but you never know...

Reading the instruction book you posted one thing I don`t like is when a progamme is canceled it says it pumps out the suds. Mine doesn`t do that and I`m glad it doesn`t.
I also didn`t find any hints in the booklet for an automatic soak cycle. I`ve really come to like the combination of a soak with a short cotton cycle for certain loads.
Has soaking been abandoned now or is it just hidden somewhere in the menu?

The possibility of limiting the max temp to 80° because of possible problems in high altitude situations is new to me. Amazing... they really seem to think of everything you could imagine and still give you a maximum of control.

Soak option

The soak option is now exclusive to the higher end models (the 4-line display machines and the Touchtronic). Not sure if the version of this machine with the 5 buttons and white door has a soak option. It certanly has the prewash as option button, but not sure about the soak option.

Isn't there the option to either change or cancel the cycle or to add laundry? I think to remember there are 3 choices, but I could be wrong.

There's no soak option on my machine but there is the ability to extend the prewash time .to 31, 34 or 37 minutes. There is an add laundry function but it's only selectable for the first ten minutes or so of the programme.it is slightly annoying that if you want to select a different cycle the machine pumps out.

My last Miele had the reduced temp function if the machine is being used at high altitudes.

I just checked and both the white door model of this machine as well as the new Classic line have the programmable soak option.

My Lavamat

Does the same thing; pumps out water at start of any new cycle. So if you decide at some point you want to change the temperature, cycle length or other option it needs to be done *before* detergent is dispensed. Otherwise it will be dumped out if one aborts and choses a new cycle.
