This dryer has been showing up intermittently on our local CL for many months. I think I may have posted it here once. The price has been consistently posted as $250 until this latest ad that re-appeared a week ago, where it has been lowered to $199.
I think someone here may have recently found the matching (or nearly matching) washer, but the ad wasn't running when they posted about having acquired it.
And yes, RCA did own Whirlpool. The two names went hand-in-hand for many years. See picture #3 in the CL posting. CLICK HERE TO GO TO rp2813's LINK on San Francisco Craigslist |

The pool hall I used to manage years ago had a pair of these. The owner had them in storage for years and one day hauled them in so we could wash our own bar rags. They had seen very little use but were very dusty from years in a storage garage. He sent a kid back to clean them up.
When I went back to connect them and get them running I saw that the employee had scrubbed every surface of them with a green Scotchbrite pad!! They were destroyed... They did last a good long time but everytime I used them I was pissed. I told the kid I was going to wash his car for him sometime lol |

Tom! Thanks for cleaning this up! I'm afraid I hadn't read the entire summer thread. So 2 question I still would like answered: 196_ what? And super speed just normal tumble? Or a little faster. I have to say I'm getting better and better at this! Greg |

As Tom said,
While US sets were marketed as RCA Whirlpool, they were not made by RCA. But The Canadian RCA Victor and RCA Whirlpool were made by Inglis for RCA, using many Whirlpool parts and patents. In fact, when Whirlpool stopped using the RCA name in the US, the Canadian version went the other way as they stopped using Whirlpool. So they were briefly badged as RCA Victor and then just RCA. Then in the early 1970s, RCA Canada changed it's line from being Made by Inglis/Whirlpool to Westinghouse. And I have documentation that shows they switched again to GE around 1977 as I saw a 1977 RCA document showing a GE/Hotpoint washer. This post was last edited 12/17/2016 at 07:17 |

This air conditioner is a Whirlpool clone. The 1st of the following pics show a RCA by Inglis dishwasher, a RCA by Westinghouse dishwasher, and a few pictures of 1977 laundry appliances which were Hotpoint clones. RCA Victor also used to sell small Hotpoint appliances in Canada back in the 1950s including the kettle in the last two pictures. |

Two-speed on dryers of this vintage refers to two drying rates/speeds. Super speed is normal, same as single-speed models. Gentle speed reduced the airflow (low blower speed by shifting the belt on the pulley) and probably the heat input rate (lower element wattage or gas burner BTU). There were two-speed models with fixed bulkheads. Airflow was reduced by a moveable baffle in the blower housing. There were models with multiple tumble speeds in the 1970s, I believe it was the "X" series in 1972, the "A" series in 1974, and the "D" series in 1976. Three tumble speeds were offered at first, then it was reduced to two, then the feature was eliminated. The last model offered with two tumble speeds was LDE-9800/LDI-9801. |

Pete,
Sorry I took so long to reply. But I just found catalogs with pictures... RCA appliances switched from being Inglis/Whirlpool clones to Westinghouse clones in the early 1970s, the one I have isn't a Westinghouse. They do look similar however! These two are Westinghouse (the second picture shows à RCA clone from 1974) |

This is the 1970 version of my 1969 RCA air conditioner, just the knobs changed but they were still made by Whirlpool. The Whirlpool versions had push buttons for the fan speeds.
