In case no one has noticed, Sun Products is discontinuing WISK and replacing it with PERSIL? Wisk's facebook page states that "If you like Wisk, you'll love Persil!" Wisk goes on to explain that it was a hard decision but PERSIL was rated #1 by USA today!!
Interesting!

I didn't know that. The only Persil I use is the ProClean 2-in-1. It and Tide Ultimate Stain Release scored an 82 in recent CR tests (the highest score of all tested detergents). All other Tide and Persil products rate a good 10+ points lower than the two mentioned.

And we say goodbye to another classic brand name.

I liked Wisk but don't care for Persil. I bought Wisk once in a while when Meijer ran it on sale for $2.99 with a $1 mperks coupon. $1.99 a bottle? Yes please! Won't be buying Persil even after Wisk is gone. Sad but true. The scent is too strong and it faded our clothes pretty badly. I hope yellow jug Tide stays around, that's what I've been using lately and have been extremely pleased with the cleaning performance and scent level.

Liked Wisk from back in the 60s and 70s.

Friend bought a jug and I detest the smell. As well as Persil 2 in 1. Way too strong. But some people like that.

Rosalie's and Persil Universal Powder. And occasionally where applicable STPP or LCB. For stains, I use Dawn, Simple Green or on whites, a paste of Cascade Complete. Sometimes diluted H2O2 for colors.

I'm not really happy at this  news. I don't have much sentiment for the name--well, yes, it's an old name that I remember. However, it has no real history for me, and there is nothing that really interests me, apart from "old name I recognize."

But...I've been using my first (and maybe last bottle--depending on how fast Wisk vanishes) jug, and have been mostly happy. I don't like the scent's strength (nothing unusual there--I hate how strongly scented detergents in general are these days), but it seems to do a reasonable job of cleaning. And it's cheaper than other choices. I think the list might be $5 locally, and i know I got my jug on sale for $3.

I'm sort of worried that Henkel might pull the plug on their other cheap detergents that work. It makes sense for them--force people to upgrade to Persil--but there is a need and place for decent, budget detergent. (I bought Wisk frankly because it was cheapest passable choice that day.) I shudder to think of a world where the only detergent choices are Cheap, but Doesn't Work and Expensive, Works, But May Be Overkill.

I liked powdered Wisk from the time they introduced the "ultra" concentrated formula in the 90's until 2003 or so, when they discontinued both the powder and the tablets, both of which I liked and were almost as good as German Persil. The liquid was OK-ish, but I never cared for it and the liquid Wisk HE was always too sudsy for me. The powders could be used in HE machines if you were measuring carefully. In any case, for about 10 years or so it was my favorite American detergent.

When they discontinued the powder and tablet I was basically left with powdered Tide HE if I wanted to buy American.

Even all became too sudsy in the 2000 and I had to give it up and buy Perwoll for stuff like silk and wool that can't be safely washed with enzymes.

Over the last 10 years I've bought a bottle of liquid Wisk HE every few years to see if it got better, and the last one I bought was when they released the Unscented version. Still too sudsy and I think they cut down on enzymes, because it doesn't wash nearly as well as the 90's version, particularly when it came to stains.

It will be interesting to see if they keep all, Purex, or both. I noticed that lately they have their original formulas without enzymes and the new ones with enzymes (but not as many as TOL brands).

I've tried the American versions of Persil. The pods are "meh, can take them or leave them, nice perfume but way too strong". The megaperls work *really* well, but can only be used for whites and light colors, they'll leave bleached spots on colors if you use warm or hot washes, which I do. I only tried the 2-in-1 liquid -- works really well, smells good (altho strong), but I'm not fond of liquids, so I dunno if I'll use it much.

People who don't like the smell of Persil should try the Sensitive, which altho not unscented is not that strong. I haven't tried it because it has fewer enzymes than the other formulas.

Worth noting,

European washers have much better rinsing than American HE washers. It cuts down on the (still too strong scent).

I loved Peril Megaperls in Germany an miss them here in the 'States .

Growing up when nearly all detergents were powders my mom always had a small bottle of Wisk on the shelf over the washer just for the stubborn stain ring around the collar thing. I haven't seen it in years. I'm on my 2nd big dispenser jug of Persil now .. don't find it very stinky but then too I use a traditional filter flo usually full of water and not a lot of detergent. Works good.

I'm sad to see Wisk go away. It's rated as one of the best "bargain" detergents in terms of cleaning performance. I think it has a wonderful smell. I'm surprised they didn't decide to keep it on as their next tier down...but perhaps they have other things in mind. All seems to sell quite well too..so that could have been a factor.

One thing they may do is price the 2-in-1 higher than the regular Persil. In my local stores, both are the same price. I always found that odd since the 2-in-1 has more cleaning power. The regular Persil will take the place of Wisk, in this case and maybe be priced lower?

Persil is an outstanding cleaner. I like the Fresh Scent more than regular. I will def give it a try again after my huge box of Sears detergent runs out.

I first used Persil ProClean 2-in-1 with the 2010 Frigidaire, dosing it to the medium line in the cap. Scent was quite strong. The Maytag 8100 features automatic dosing and must use substantially less detergent (at the soft water setting, anyway) because there's very little Persil-scent left behind.

I like Persil but I'm not a huge fan of the scent. It's too citrusy, I like the more traditional laundry scents like the old original Tide powder (now Mountain Spring) or Gain Original. I used a bottle of Wisk last year and liked it, the scent was alright, if a tad too sweet but not irritating. Citrus scented cleaning products (including Pine Sol) are like an irritant to me, I just feel itchy and irritable in the presence of them.

Persil 2-in-1 is priced higher. The same size bottle does less loads than the regular Persil.

Wisk around the collar means ring around the collar and your whole wash comes clean.

What will we do about those dirty rings now?

I always used Tide UNTIL Persil was on the market here, I love the scent and the result. So many other detergents smell good when you open them but leave no scent on the clothes. Persil cleans my clothes as good if not better than Tide and leaves a very pleasant scent. I never cared for Wisk at all.

I was at Sam's yesterday and they only had 4 jugs of Wisk left. In it's place was All with Oxi. Out of curiosity I opened the bottle to smell it....well low and behold it smells just like Wisk! haha. I wonder if they will be putting the Wisk formula into All labeling? Wisk actually gets very good reviews from CR...they rated it as one of the best cleaning budget detergents. I guess All sells better...would kind of make sense.

I tried Persil 2in1 and Pro Pearls

whirlykenmore78's profile picture

ProClean 2 in 1 works ok but sudses more in the SQ than Tide Turbo HE.  Pearls clean well but could dissolve better as I have found a few clinging to the door boot after the cycle.

While both are good products I can see no reason to switch from Tide HE turbo clean which gets along very well with my washer(SQ FL) and cleans clothes well.

I just saw this on their site. I'm very disappointed. Wisk has been my favorite since I first posted about it. It never fails, once I fall for something, it's always taken away :(

I bought 4 bottles from walmart tonight. I wrote to them a professionally worded letter about how disappointing it was that they are stopping production of Wisk. They wrote me back. Here's what they said.

I stopped caring about Wisk when it stopped being the true Wisk I remember -- the murky blue liquid with a pleasing and distinctive scent, back when it was anything but a budget brand.   Nothing else smelled like Wisk did, or IMO did as good a job of cleaning.  Add to that the correlation between my mom's new '74 Kenmore -- finally something other than a self-destructing (S)Norge -- and the smell of Wisk blended with the new machine smell, and modern Wisk never stood a chance with me.

So, Wisk's demise is no big loss as far as I'm concerned.  I'm still mourning the loss of Gain and Tide HE powder.  The "for both" (FL and TL) HE formulas that replaced the original are far too sudsy to use in a FL machine.

Oh also, for the 100 ounce bottle you get 2 less loads according to the label and it's almost $4 more. The scents are overpowering and to me not very appealing.

Since Henkel bought Sun Products It makes sense that they would want to sell there premium detergent over a less expensive better rated detergent. As of now Henkel will still be producing All,Sun,and Surf brands which should be a very similar formula to Wisk. It is a shame though that they will be getting rid of the Wisk brand I picked up a bottle of it a few months ago and liked how it worked especially for the price.

Always a heartache

When a favorite product is discontinued. For me it was when Kellogg's discontinued their Great Harvest granola bars that had blueberry on the top.

As for Wisk, back in the day I always used Wisk to keep white laundry snowy white. Then one day I noticed my white laundry was not as white. Hmmmm. Come to think of it, this liquid and its scent seem a little different. Then I looked at the label and saw that Unilever sold it to Sun, and I knew for sure it wasn't real Wisk anymore. I thought, well I'll just use it for cleaning rags. It did a pitiful job at that too. So I threw the bottle out and switched to Tide. That was when I was disappointed. To me Wisk was discontinued years and years ago.

Apparently at some point, perhaps after Henkel bought Sun, the quality was improved again. Maybe that was when the bottle changed from blue back to red? Oh well. No point in trying it now.

Cheer is another detergent that seems to have numbered days. Kind of a shame. It's cheap, cleans well, does not oversuds, smells OK, and is easy on clothes.

Post# 923507 , Reply# 25   2/24/2017 at 00:46 (2,615 days old) by earthling177 (Boston, MA)

So I guess they'll ride the "60 year anniversary" "first liquid" laundry detergent wave for a bit before quitting the home market. Maybe they'll continue for the commercial niche.

I also remember when Cheer was more expensive than Tide (and cleaned a little bit better), or at least the formula sold around here in New England in the early 90's was. It had pretty good scent and performance in the (then, newly introduced) Ultra concentrated powder. I had to stop using it around 1997 or so, when the formula became way too sudsy to use even in the toploader I had at the time, because the water around here is naturally soft.

Cheers,
   -- Paulo.

It is, and, unlike Wisk, it's a name that has history for me. I remember my mother using the stuff at one point. It was also the first detergent I, myself, ever bought myself.

Over the last few years, I've slowly used up two boxes of Cheer that I got on clearance. It served me well--both as a daily driver (when I had 2 boxes), and for times I wanted something that had no optical brighteners. I'm down to probably only one load's supply now.

Sounds like choice is going all away in the laundry soap sector.
Just like dishwasher detergent. It'll soon be just two players.
Finish and Cascade.
P&G could likely consolidate all to Tide, and Henckel could consolidate all to Persil. All at high markups.
Only store brands would cover the lower end market.

Yay!.........................................................
