That looks one fine beast of a machine with the wings either side of the door. Was this the first non bolt down model ? anyone have this model ?

And is that the matching dryer just showing to the left ?

I am not certain of the year, but I believe it to be more toward the beginning of the 50's and possibly even the end of the 40's. I know before that machine, they had to be bolted down.

I know the model over here was much later around 1961 and a big beast considering it washed a 9lb wash load and 27+ inches wide, a little over a decade late same washload would be done in a 22 inch wide machine...

IIRC, 1948-49 was the first Gyromatic that didn't have to be bolted to the floor. This looks to be from about that time as the first Bendix clothes dryer was intro'd about 1948 or so.

To the left of the washer, you can see the edge of the vent on the corner next to the washer. It vented from the front into the room, into a handy lint catcher hanging on the front of the machine. There was an optional exterior venting kit that ran a pipe from the front of the dryer over the top or around the side, connecting to the vent to the outside. The machine recycled some of the warm air exhausted from the drum, reheating it to run through the drum again so there wasn't a huge volume of air moving through the final exhaust.

The "updated" one in P.O.D.  retained a bit of the art deco look.  Very nice.

Thanks Greg for the info does any club member have the "original" POD model with chrome door wings ?

The Bendix dryer sounds interesting with front vent couldn't imagine the amount of condensation from a slow spin machine. Will do a search to see if on file in a post etc..
