Hi,

Can anyone tell me what the main differences and similarities between the Maytag 712 and 713 dryers are?

Thanks in advance.

Looking at two threads that have a DE712 dryer, it looks like both are electronic control dry.  The 712 has 3 temps--regular, delicate, and air fluff as well as variable end of cycle signal  There's also a start button.  The timer dial controls degree of dryness and and perm press cycle has extended tumble press care.   I found a basic control panel sketch on sears downloaded manuals and I had friends that had the LDE713.  The panel had the same buttons for heat levels.  There was also the start button and cycle signal level adjustment.  The degree of dryness was also on the panel with three buttons--less dry, regular dry, and more dry.   The cycle control dial has a "start" position for both the regular and perm press cycles.  The press care on this dryer was optional at the end of the perm press cycle.  the press care segment on both dryer models also served as the air fluff segment on the timer dial.  All to the best of my recollection.   My friends that had the LDE713 dryer originally had a set from the late 1970s that was an A407 fabric matic washer and DE606 big load electronic control dryer.  The LDE713 replaced that dryer.  They called me in like 2008 or 2010 asking for a suggestion to what they would replace their dryer with.  I begged them to have the dryer repaired but they wanted a new one.  They ended up with a Maytag branded whirlpool dryer.

The reason I ask is that I have a line on a LDE713 dryer that has spent its entire life in a summer cottage and has only been used a few months a year. I haven't been able to see it yet but one would have to assume it really hasn't seen much use it its life and is in pretty nice shape. It looks pretty pristine in the pictures...

I'd grab it in a heart beat.  It truly the best TOL version of the post center dial models until my LDE9824 in my opinion.

Asking price is $75 CAD which is ~$57 USD and I'm sure I could talk him down a bit. Good deal at $45 - $50 USD?

The problem is where it is and the amount of hassle it will be to get it. I'll incur a fair bit of time and fuel costs to get it.

I understand they're fairly rare though. Only made for a short time. Can someone tell me what year(s) they were made?

Are most of the drivetrain parts common with the 712 or other more common/long-lived dryers? I don't want to buy something that's impossible to get parts for.

Are you sure it's an LDE 713?
That would mean that there was an aLmond 713 model dryer produced between 1988 and 1990.
It's POSSIBLE but I can find no evidence in the literature that it happened.

Maytag service literature does not list a 713 dryer in 1988.

Are your sure it's not a LDE prefix machine from 1990-1994?

A picture woud clear this up in a heartbeat.

The tag clearly says LDE713. It looks pretty similar to a 12 series machine with the gold stripe around the perimeter of the control panel so it looks like an '80s machine to me. Then again, I'm no expert in this area. What I found from reading some old threads on this site is that they were only made a short time and are considered fairly rare and hard to find. Only '88 - '90 you say?

I just got to talk with the seller and he tells me the dryer has spent its entire life in their ski cabin where it only saw "regular" duty over about 4 months a year and for a lot of that 4 month time period it was only used on the weekends. It was then used very sparingly for the balance of the year. The only reason he's selling it is because he gave the matching washer (not sure what model that was) to his daughter who just got her first home. I'm guessing that they bought a new or newer matching washer and dryer for the cabin or actually more likely than that, bought a new set for their home and moved the set that was in their home out to their cabin.

After having a long conversation with the seller I don't see any reason not to believe him about the amount of use the dryer has seen so if this machine is as rare as it seems and as good as Appnut is saying AND has so few miles on it after all these years, it sounds like this one might be a bit of a unicorn. Could I be that lucky?

The asking price is $75 CAD which is about $57 USD. The guy might even deliver it to my sister's place 40 miles away for that price or maybe for a bit extra gas money. Good deal?

The one thing I'm wondering is if it used all the same drivetrain and other mechanical parts as most of the other Maytag dryers of the era (i.e. the 712s). I just want to make sure I'm not buying something that's going to be near impossible to find parts for.

The reason I was sceptical is because I have no service literature on that model dryer and I have a LOT of Maytag service literature. But the proof is in the pictures! BTW, the serial number "XC" means this machine was "born" in February 1989. These are decent dryers, usually very quiet, and still relatively easy to get common parts for.

Wow, thanks for digging all that information up, Kenmore71! Now I know the differences between a 713 and a 712 dryer in great detail!

I'm going to try and get that dryer but there's no guarantee I'll get it. It will depend on my sister and her husband's willingness to store the dryer in their garage for a few months for me until I can get down to where they live and move the dryer into my cabin. There's no guarantee they'll do that.

Here's a question: In 1989, what would have been the washer that would most likely have been paired up with that dryer? The A712?

Yes, A712 was TOL.

I bought the dryer! The guy will hold it for me until I can pick it up in the Spring. :-)

The seller mentioned he still had the manuals for the washer and the dryer so for interest's sake, I asked him what the model of the washer was. I forget the letter prefix but he said the washer was a 613. I've never heard of a 613 washer before. I assume that was another short-lived model like the 713 dryer?

Well I found parts diagram of an A613.  Looks similar to an A612.  It's two speed, variable water level, and 5 wash/rinse temperatures.  Looks like timer has regular and perm press cycles.  And I'm guessing, maybe some sort of soak.  I also see a graphic of what the A712 control panel looks like.  It looks like the A613 is just a 2-speed version of the 4-speed A712. Oh, and congratulations!!

Going to look at an A612 washing machine tonight. If it's in good shape and if I can get it cheap enough, it should make a good companion for the 713 dryer. I'm hoping to get it for about $60 CAD which is about $46 USD. That's not too much to pay is it?

If the washer runs OK, that's a good price.

When I bought my LA511 and LDE410 dryer, the brochure said my washer was a 510 and my old Maytag dealer said when they add an extra last number it is an improvement. 510's do not have a bleach dispenser but your 511 does.

Got the A612 for $55 CAD so about $43 USD. It's in great shape. Took the front off and had a good look around inside. Very clean. No signs of leaks anywhere or metallic dust around the dampener.

Looks like I've got my washer and dryer set for the cabin for the next two decades or more! Hopefully, it won't be too hard to find a buyer for the 1978 Sears Inglis set that's currently at the cabin when I open it up this spring.

Thanks to everyone who helped me by posting answers to my questions on this thread!
