I admit it... I am spoiled.  Having two dishwashers in the kitchens in Ogden AND St-Lib is wonderful, so not having been able to use the '62 Superba portable for nearly 2 months now has been a pain.

Not that anything was wrong with the machine itself - I just couldn't use it because, literally, the wheels came off.

Here's what 55 years of normal wear and tear did to the caster wheels.

So I figured I could find a replacement set of casters somewhere.  Nope.  They are an oddball size and with my shaky hands and bad eyes, I had a devil of a time trying to get accurate measurements.  Hubby helped me with that, but I still couldn't find a replacement caster.  I did find the original KA part number and still had no luck.  I wasn't about to swipe the casters from the KDS55 down in Ogden either...

Well, I should have thought of this first - ask PhilR!   I was whining to him about this situation and he said he'd check at a supply house in his former hometown of Joliette when he was passing through.

He found me a set of new casters that didn't have the right mounting plate, but the wheels were removable.

Yep, you guessed, I swapped 'em.  Not a perfect fit but they work!

Of course to be absolutely sure these wheels worked, I HAD to do a test load of dishes.  Only logical, right?

Good timing that we had a small dinner party last night... The Maytag got to deal with most of the pots and pans and the KA got most of the dishes.

However....

See, still sticking to that no 'but' resolution...

I did notice a small drip from the fill hose - that rubber is cracking and will no doubt fail when I least expect it like when I have a house full of people.   So, I will have to keep my eyes out for a spare fill hose.  It could be worse and I can still use the KA in the meantime.

I missed it!!

The Maytag being the pots & pans washer and the KA being the dish washer.  That's restrictive loading and not free-wheeling loading.  Good your dishes fit so well in the KA as opposed to being a design which blocks water.  lol

Can one achieve a 'Bob Load' Certification if one segregates the pots and pans from the dinnerware?

Nice to see they work! I had doubts when I saw the size difference between the old and the new casters!

HI Paul, Good for you on your new find. Was that Joliet, Illinois where your friend found those wheels? I would love to know where that is in Joliet, my brother lives there and I am only 2 hrs. away. Thanks, happy washing, Gary

Speaking of casters.. When I lived in Calgary there was a store completely dedicated to wheels and casters.. Caster Town.

Paul, I used to do the same thing with the KDS 14 and the KDS 18.
