These are exactly like the set we bought brand new in 1987. They were wonderful machines. Used them for 7 trouble free years, sold them the house and the new owner used them for several years more.

bought a set for my partner back in 1989.....had the weigh-to-save door....fantastic machines.....first they were stacked in the bathroom, then moved to the kitchen under a counter.....

trying my best to talk myself out of this set....but they are unique to have...

A very nice pair, especially for the price (assuming there's nothing major wrong with them).  I believe that's the updated version with the variable speed, reversing DC motor.  Reverse tumbling, a bit slower ramp up to spin speed and adjustable water level (less is more!).   I'd be interested if on the West coast, especially for the price.  But I already have a set of these in white.

Go get 'um Martin!

JCP had these in their catalogue at the time.  IIRC.  Of course they no longer badged major appliances as  Penncrest.

I still wonder about exactly who went to Penny's to buy appliances, other than store employees using their discount. Maybe it was different in places where there were not already established department stores selling national brands.  Given what was said about the disastrous venture Grant's had with major appliances because men did not go into the store like they went to Sears, it just seems strange that Penny's got caught up in selling majors.

as revolving in-store charge accounts were fading...stores like Penney's had their own charge account....

was easier to get a Penney's account, or even a Visa/MasterCard, than it was to get a Sears card...

I applied for a Sears charge, just to have on hand, was denied, 2 days later, applied again with a purchase of a washer and dryer, approved in 3 minutes...

in the mail days later, a Sears charge, Sears Charge Plus, and a Discover Card.....figure that one out....

these machines were cheaper at Penney's than what other stores sold them as, but delivery was just to the store, you had to get them home yourself....pros and cons with everything I guess.....

Thank you for the back story.

I remember when Sears introduced the Discover Card. They were going to do all of these wonderful things then they got out of the game. Funny.
