Transporting a Front Loader WITHOUT Securing Drum |

What should one expect to see after traveling in aforementioned fashion from Texas to California...on say a recent model "Right Height" GE washer? The owner is selling the sweet looking (gun metal gray) set for a song because the drum is now cockeyed in the cabinet and a water supply hose (stored inside the washer for the trip) jammed itself between the drum and, well somewhere else. I have yet to see it in person. I suppose the struts/shocks are damaged, or maybe something easier like freeing the hose would get things back in whack? Please share with us an idea what to look for if you have any sage wisdom in this area... I know GE FL machines are less than wonderful in the reliability dept. but a c note for the pair might get them home and the current owner dropped $2,800 just three years ago on the set...and they have been sitting unused for 6 months of that time. | ||

Worst case scenario a broken $20 shock. Likely the upper suspension spring popped off. | ||

Got 'em. Unbelievably the dryer fit in my Saturn LW300 wagon. Tomorrow I will go back for the washer. The wash drum is just cockeyed, no other damage at all that I can see. These units are beeyouteefull! Really well kept, as was everything else I could see around the house in a gated community not too far away from me. The owner was not happy about letting them go but his new-too-small-laundry-closet, and gas hook up, and too small garage, and insistent wife...demanded he do so. Very refreshing the dark metallic smoke color. This pic from the ad in no way does them justice. Sick of all the white appliance out there.

Well, this is a fine mess. Even if i re-hang the drum assembly it would seem these buggers will not be any easier to remove. No clue how this could happen...hose ends getting stuck between the inner metal and outer plastic drums. | ||

Well so much for a quick and easy fix. Top and rear panel removed...the front panel is next. I retrieved the errant spring but as you can see other parts / debris are also evident. The white dowel like piece i guess is the fourth strut retainer, the other three are still in place. All four struts/shocks are flopping and dangling... I see a large black rubber hose being squished under the drum...hope nothing is leaking when i get this thing operational again. I think I will need to partially and carefully destroy the hose ends that are struck to remove them. The website below has all the pics and info i have needed thus far; you may want to bookmark it. These are good machines, but GE used HORRIBLE bearings on them. Since the right height models came out, EVERY washer we've sold has had the bearings go out. I was looking through our service database and every machine matched up with the order/sales history.
I'm just saying this as a hint, check the bearings. Otherwise they are great machines! | ||

I decided to skip the bearing kit as this machine seems to have had little use. Yes those be the nasty hoses of ill repute sitting safely to oneside, still whole and no doubt usable. What i done was re-hang the tub; a job made easier by removing the top weight and the help of two friends who happened by. I then loosened all 16 (i think) tub bolts and carefully moved the front half foreward to allow the stuck water hoses to be freed. The bolts were easier to access than i would have thought, and fairly loose too. I also have removed the old dampers. It needs two new ones, which i ordered, $35 total. Should i put the new ones on the front or rear? The tub feels solid, and spins smoothly. No sound other than the water in the balance ring sloshing around...at least i assume that's what that noise is. Whatever the case, i feel the corner has been turned and it is only another session or two from being all buttoned up and ready for a test flight. | ||

this would be the second machine I seen that the springs jumped out of place, which almost seemed impossible...
even with the top removed, you had to also remove the dispenser box, and lift the drum up past the top to re-install them..... plus those top springs usually have a screwed down strip over top to prevent them from jumping out of place.... just one of those things, the world will never know how it happened....but I guess the impossible can happen..... once back in place, ran it for a few months, and it worked fine....eventually I sold it... all in all, you didn't do bad with the price for the set...... | ||

They was no screwed down strip...nevertheless it musta been a big bump to bounce the drum assembly high enough. Moving vans like this rode in do have stiff springs, so if he loaded it last it probably got bounced around good. So much bouncing I am thinking of replacing all the dampers. The two new ones I bought have so much more resistance (aka dampening) than the two I was going to reuse...that it seems replacing all four is the smarter move. | ||

I've transported frontloaders several times without shipping bolts ... not a big deal when due caution is followed. | ||

The washer reassembly is finally completed; every scew accounted for! I ran the "basket clean"' cycle with a dose of liquid bleach -as per GE instructions- for test purposes...and it didn't miss a beat. No leaks, no weird noises, a fine runnin' machine. The dryer received only a simple cleaning as it had no issues. Then last week i sold both to a very happy young military couple. "Why so cheap? Everything else we looked at was grungy, these sparkle. My Dad always bought GE." I had lowered the price for a quicker sale but i am still very happy with the money i made on the pair. | ||
