 We often see DWs in this condition and worse, the first thing the users were doing wrong is they were pre-rinsing their dishes, How do I know this, because this DW was not working properly And the only way it was putting out dishes that were at all clean enough to use was because they were going in clean.
If you use a DW properly always putting visibly dirty dishes you will quickly know when something is not working with your machine.
My Aunt in Pennsylvania had a KDS-18 that was completely black inside, it turned out to have a bad wash-arm-support, bad inlet valve and clogged filter. It was so bad we trashed the DW and installed a new WP DW. | ||

I know John is adamantly against pre-rinsing, but....
To be clear. pre-rinsing or pre-washing DOES NOT CAUSE this condition!
To rephrase what John said, if you load your dishwasher without pre-rinse anything, you will quickly be able to tell if the dishwasher is not operating properly (dishes still dirty after the cycle is done). This one obviously has not been working correctly for a long time, with all that mold / mildew in it. Yuk!

Must have quit working and they closed it up and walked away with water in it. Mold went wild. Clearly worse then repeated use of the Rinse & Mold Cycle. | ||

How can the machine be in "mint" condition when its a mold hole on the inside?Think the seller has been breathing too much of that black mold in there!You would have to PAY me to take that washer-may have to be buried in the hazmat dump! | ||

I am just amazed....
I've been watching this auction since it was originally posted at $125. They then re-listed for $200 and now has it listed for a Buy It Now at $245.
Is it just me who thinks this is nuts? Would somebody really buy this machine at that price and attempt to clean it up?
Maybe I should just mind my own business and hope the guy gets lucky but it never ceases to amaze me how some people think they have a goldmine on their hands because something is "Older" or "Vintage." CLICK HERE TO GO TO chachp's LINK on eBay | ||

I'd save the steel panels and trim kit and set the rest on fire….I have one of those machines, and love it. But as was noted above, this level of mould accumulation is from someone closing the door on a damp and faulty machine and walking away for weeks/months on end. Bet there's a quart of swamp quality water sitting in the sump and drain hose...

Pour in About a gallon of Clorox, and a couple gallons of boiling water and let it run...It will be clean as new in no time. | ||

Stained DW The black stains in this DW are not likley mold, they are more likley caused by conditions in the water supply coupled with mechaneal problems with the DW.
This DW could be saved if you wanted to save it, bleach would probably do little or nothing for staining if for example it is caused by magnesium in the water. In any case one should never consider putting a gallon of LCB in a DW, 1/4 cup would be about all you would ever need to sanitize and remove stains that LCB will remove, putting in a gallon will only destroy any rubber parts of this DW that may still be good. | ||
