Was this model in POD not known as the Giromat from the start of production ?

And was it the first without having to be bolted down to the floor ?

Funny, I hadn't given any thought to when they gave a name to the wash action. Must have been after they went to this type of machine as opposed to the old "diving bell". Maybe when they introduced the Combo. 1953?
In any event, back in those days the Bendix was considered by most folks as the "premium" front-loader.

I have a 1963 that Kim gifted to me long ago. It's a gas combo. I don't use it as a dryer, however, it is a very capable front-load washer even if it is the smaller cabinet and tub design.

While I'm not on the hunt for classics these days, a '57 Gyromatic is one of the few I'd still go nuts for.

Not sure on the name change - going from Gyromatic to Tumble Agitator.  Some of the last bolt downs were sold up through '53 or '54 (I'd have to check the archives).

I believe the switches are for either wash and rinse temp, or wash temp and heater switch.

Steve - I too used a gassy early 60's Duo as a washer and loved it.

Ben

EDIT - the Philco version of this washer has the sales brochure available on AE.org (WGG-C).  The two slider switches are indeed for Wash and Rinse temps.  Too cool!  There also was a model down that looked more like the UK version and the wash temp was determined by the timer setting (WGG-D).

Beautiful washer Mike. Like how that vintage box of Rinso proclaims "Extra Soapy".
