After a picturesque drive up to Poughkeepsie, New York, I am now the proud owner of yet another Caloric Ultramatic. While not as top of the line as the one in my kitchen, still a very nice stove. A very nice gay couple were flipping a house and the stove was left behind. Owned once by an "old lady", apparently bought new. I don't know how, but between me and another guy we managed to get the stove into the truck. I took everything I could to lighten the stove, but that SOB was HEAVY. Anyway, it's home waiting for a wipe down and the first pictures (to be posted here later this evening). Stay tuned. Once again, thanks Ken!

These must be the earliest knobs for the 1962 redesign. Never seen these before. Notice the lettering is pristine. And how cool is this? Still has the "Good Housekeeping" seal of approval. Where the Ultra-ray broiler would be, is a shelf. Sigh. I can't imagine what happened here. Looks like someone took a grinder to it. What a shame. On a brighter note, the oven light does work. However it was bypassed and wired directly to a plug. The original plug with cord is rolled up and taped in the back. Looks like some short must of happened. I'll know more one I open it up. |

Oh well, its still a beautiful piece even minus the Ultraray, Nobody without our knowledge would know it was missing, Louie. Most would scorn us for having something that old, but little do they know what all of us know and what they are missing, these old appliances are still going fine and can be kept going fine.

So now my sister decided she wants a "new" stove, not this. Fine, it's her money.
So now I'm torn. Originally I thought if she changed her mind on this Caloric, I'd just dismantle it for parts and toss the carcass. But it's in such nice shape. Better even than mine. The doors, the side panels are pristine. Almost everything is. I wish I could restore it and just keep it. But space will not permit. Sigh. |

I have decided to take this stove apart.
It will donate the illuminated panel, the Utra-ray broiler door, knobs and the side panels if possible to my '64 Caloric.
Parts I will keep, the rest of the control panel, oven rack, oven door, broiler drawer, runners, all burners, drip plates, grates, valves, oven thermostat, stove top, and anything else I can salvage. Basically I'll be recycling a stripped down carcass. This is not a decision I took lightly. It really does break my heart. But with these parts, I can keep my Ultramatic working indefinitely. So in a way, it will live on. I will post pictures as I delve into it. |

I'm happy to report, my sister has reconsidered. The Ultramatic will go to a new home. YEA! Turns out a porter in my building knows how to convert an LP range to natural gas. However, I WILL still switch this Caloric's light panel with mine.
I feel so much better, it was killing me to take this one apart. |

Since everything works as it should, the only reason I can think of is that somehow the knobs for the oven and panel lights were lost. Then someone just bypassed the panel and wired up the oven light directly to a plug. Talk about doing something half assed.
On a brighter note (no pun intended), I found a qualified repair man to convert the Caloric from LPG to natural gas.
