Yuck! Anything with hot tuna in this house and they both gag. I'm the only one who enjoys an occasional cheesy tuna noodle casserole.
Lenten shmenten, having been raised Catholic, we've also concluded that fish is also an animal protein.
When the Vatican made the no meat rule, it was everyday, not only Fridays, and was because of mad cow disease. In those days, the church pretty much was the law.
Too each their own I say.

Wow! I have never, ever seen any recipes for a pie dough/crust made with yeast before.  Dammit Louie, now I have get into the kitchen again to try this one..  LOL

YUCK, Tuna and anything is disgusting to me now. Lent was spent sneaking meat when no one knew. I spent many Palm Sunday's through that long and boring Catholic service. And then to have ham and fried eggs on Easter Sunday dinner, double Yuck. I am making corned beef and vegs for this Sunday, no tuna in this house.

I was raised Catholic, but we didn't observe the fish on Friday rule very often. I remember being worried about eating meat on Friday and the resultant sin. My Mom, always ready with a cleaver answer said that since she was anemic the whole family had "special dispensation" and could eat meat on Friday for health reasons. I never questioned her on this, it worked for me since I hated Fish Sticks, remember those nasty things, yuck.

Back in those days

I think house wives were more that, with plenty of common sense. Cooking a pudding, etc. with eggs is common sense.
Today, with women working more outside the kitchen as well, plus the fact that law suits are much more apt these days, companies cover them selves with cooking directions for safe consumption so they can say, you were given them, and have no grounds for a law suit.

that's because today, common sense is no longer common. Thus the need for redundant warnings that 50 years ago, adults just "knew".

I recall my mother making that bunny cake when I was a little kid, smiled when I saw it.


As to raw eggs, I use them that way from time to time, in various recipes no issues.

I mention again.........

Davidson's Safest Choice eggs! They are pasteurized in-shell eggs. Yes, they are higher priced compared to standard eggs, but I do not want to run the risk of giving anyone salmonella poisoning. Not all supermarket eggs are salmonella free.

People who are elderly, very small children, immune compromised are most at risk for food poisoning. Why take a chance? In the supermarket I go to, Safest Choice eggs are about 50% higher, but to me, that's cheap insurance!

I like the chow mein noodles but that's it.  As far as raw eggs go, I've had my share of licking the cake and brownie batter bowls for 46 years and I'm not dead yet either.

I follow the same hygiene principles one follows when preparing chicken - one knows that presence of the salmonella bacteria is a 100% certainty, so one prepares accordingly.

Pasteurized eggs are a big help, but so is basic hygiene.

No fresh egg has set shell in my house for many a year! I've been using Egg Beaters or other brand liquid egg product for a long time. I've also used meringue powder when making pies.

The last time I bought a carton of eggs was over 10 years ago when I decided to color eggs at Easter. I hid them for my nephew to hunt, and threw them away when we were done.

Why Bother ??? If those ingredients are not enough to scare you... Well... I can't understand why you would rather enjoy all those chemicals and unnatural ingredients just to over look a real egg...

Sorry guys... but I can't understand or can fathom why anyone would prefer chemicals over natural ingredients.

I have eaten so many raw eggs in my life I couldn’t possibly count them.  I always lick the batter off the spoons and beater.  But I also put raw eggs right into several things I make, particularly original-recipe French Silk Pie.  Raw yolks go into my steak tartar, which is of course raw beef.  And I frequently make my own mayonnaise, with plenty of raw eggs.  And I make a lot of cocktails with raw eggs.  Come to think of it, for dinner last night, I had 2 dozen raw oysters. 


Way off topic, and I don’t want to interrupt this wonderful thread, but I always feel a compulsion to speak out against food-panic syndrome.

I was taken aback at first as well, but it does say to use just enough to coat bottom of pan, so I don't think it's going to be greasy. I think butter might be better.

I actually tried using this this past week. I made corned beef and cabbage with onions, carrots and potatoes and seasoned with garlic powder, pepper and a touch of salt. I used the amount instructed for the amount of food being prepared and oh my goodness. It was the best corned beef I have made yet. I did do some research as far as the controversy of MSG and basically when used in moderation or as instructed, its not bad for your health as it was once thought to be. Plus its found in some foods naturally already like tomatoes and cheese. I recommend trying it out. I like it!
