Anyone familiar with rooiboos tea?  Ran across it at the local grocery last week.  Researched and it's apparently a "miracle" tea -- no oxalates, no caffeine, low in tannins, high in antioxidants and various minerals, supposedly has an array of health benefits.  Fetched a box, made it iced.  It's ... different.  Found a description that it's "nutty," which sort-of it is but that doesn't seem quite exactly right.

Glenn,
It is a great tea that I have read is actually not a "tea". It is a type of herb or plant that is steeped like a tea. Has no caffeine and I like it hot and iced. It naturally has a sweet flavor and plenty of antixodants. Supposed to have other health benefits as well. I know that when I go to the beach I make a strong brew of this to drink and also I fill a spray bottle and spray it frequently on my exposed skin instead of a chemical sunsceeen. Green tea also works for the topical use in a spray bottle. I noticed it would help me sleep when I would drink Rooiboos before bed.

I'm assuming you got this at HEB.  I've been buying and drinking this for about 3 or 4 years at least.  If you come to like this tea, I'd keep a box on hand at all times.  There are times during the month they won't have it on the shelves, sold out.  I thoroughly enjoy it.  A slight sweetness.  I have a good 8-12 oz mug (hot or cold) daily in the afternoon/evening after work before I have my sleepy time tea. Daily I have green tea, rooibos tea, and sleepy time tea.  My top rack fills with mugs fairly quickly in the week lol.

Most people like Rooibos (red bush) tea, but some people (like me) are sensitive to the side effects of it. I got cramps after drinking it regular for a while. Here's an article about the side effects. It's good to know it's not always harmless.

Someone at work occasionally buys it to stock the company fridge. I can't claim to be a fan. It tastes like moldy leaves to me. Last time I saw it in the fridge, I forgot I don't care for it, and wound up hiding a mostly filled bottle in the trash. Shame on me.

On a similar note, anybody tried yerba maté?

I love Rooibos tea!!!!!!   It's my summer time drink.  I keep a pitcher of it iced in the fridge and I also make a lemonade with fresh lemon juice and sweetened with honey and make my own version of an "arnold palmer"  It's the first thing my friends ask for when they come in the door.

Side effects and problems with:

Louis, thanks for the post I really had no idea that there could be problems in certain people with this tea. I love the taste and have not experienced the side effects listed in the article you shared. Sounds as though we really need to research anything we ingest. I am a sugar fiend and anything sweet I can become attracted. This tea has a sweet taste that does not need much alternative sweetening.

Rooiboos

I love it! To me, it is one of the few herbal "teas" that I like without any added sweetening, either traditional or calorie-free.

I have a large canning jar full of it in my kitchen at all times.

I love good rooibos but it seems to vary a lot. It is my main "cuppa" as I can't drink real coffee or black tea. (I do drink decaf coffee, one cup a day.) I drink one or two cups of rooibos a day, hot and black, no milk or sugar.

There is one brand of rooibos tea bags here in Australia, called Just Rooibos African Tea, which I have preferred for years. At its best it has a slight almond taste so I can understand it being called "nutty". But even my preferred brand varies a lot, at times it is quite bland and lifeless. They seem to have a bad batch in stores at present, I am on my second box of this batch number and it is flavourless. I am watching the batch numbers in supermarkets, I won't buy it again until the batch number changes. There is a gourmet tea supplier in Geelong who has loose leaf rooibos in bulk, I might get some of that next.

A few years ago, when on holiday in New Zealand, I bought some Red Seal rooibos tea bags. It was the worst I have ever tasted, it smelled like vomit. Funny because Red Seal make some other herbals tea blends I really like, and their "Alpine Tea" despite its fancy sounding name, is an excellent laxative.
In Australia there a couple of brands of "rooibos tea with vanilla" which ruins the taste for me, too sweet. I love vanilla and love rooibos but they are a bad combination.
Kromland Farm from the UK have a few "rooibos plus..." blends, I like the rooibos plus honeybush which is another South African herb.

Like Gizmo stated in his last post, it is a South African tea that originally grow high up in the Cederberg mountains. It does not get any irrigation and it practically grows in sand. It is a rather hardy plant and has many medicinal uses. There are a few cosmetic houses also using this product as their main "rejuvenating" ingredient due to its high anti-oxidant capabillities. Annique, was the first cosmetic house here in South Africa that started the use thereof. Losts of research has gone into the use of the tea and there is currently various creams and lotions that contains the "rooibos extract".

All in all a very cheap tea here you can buy it huge bags of about 50kg from farmers, it also has high fluoride levels and is even good for your teeth, or so I have read somewhere. Glad you guys like a truly South African product

I should add that the only type I have sampled has been a bottled slightly sweetened version, chilled.

Yuck.

The awful stuff I've sampled is "Wicked Lekker" brand Rooibos.

Avoid it.

Suds, that "Wicked Lekker" is truly that .... "wicked". I had tried that a while back, you are right, yuck!

I buy the Whole Foods private label brand and it really is great. I usually steep the bags for about five to ten minutes. If I am making iced tea I steep for ten.

I mentioned above that when I go to the beach I make a strong brew and place it in a spray bottle. When my kids were small I would spray them down with this tea ( or green tea ) and it prevented them from a sunburn. There is something about the antioxidant qualities of this and also free tea that help prevent a UV burn. I read using the topical application helps to prevent cellular damage and also repairs some of the damage that can occur with over exposure.

The chemical sunscreens prevent the skin from formulating vitamin D when exposed to UV. Both the Roobios and green tea topically applied prevent the burn and allow the skin to formulate D.

I know it is mentioned above about flavors that are introduced to the tea, such as vanilla. I agreed with the former post, I like the taste and flavor of just pure Roobios. The vanilla is odd tasting and I did try the pomegranate infused Roobios as well. It was alright, not my favorite.

I bought the grocery chain's house brand, don't know from where/who they source it.

I made a gallon with 1 cup of sugar.  Says 3 to 5 bags per quart, I used 9 bags.  Sometimes plain/iced, sometimes with lemonade added per urologist's advisory regards to citric acid being helpful to ward-off kidney stones.

is Mma Ramotswe, a lady of traditional build and founder of The No.1 Ladies Detective Agency in Botswana - Mma is pronounced "Ma" and is a tern of respect for ladies .

The character is, of course fictional, but there are episodes of one season's TV on YouTube. There have been many more radio adaptations done here, but I could not find any on line for streaming. I had never heard of this tea before hearing the story.
