Following on from our "Large gathering" Halloween weekend 2016 it soon becomes apparent that our beloved vintage appliances often need a repair, tweek or masterbuild in order to keep them tickity boo and working !! You can see in the link thread that we often start repairs on said machines but have so much fun meeting up and chatting that we run out of time Sooo with that in mind we set too this weekend with a few of us to "Get To Grips" with a few key projects..
1. The follow on work with the very rare English Electric 4027 Autowasher found by Darren Aitch in a garden... 2. Finding out the cause of the Hoover keymatic timer not advancing after the great work already done by Steve and Richard.. 3. Rolls Rapide twinny getting a new spin pump and overhaul 5. Electra Creda front loader overhaul and drum bearings and door boot/ 6. Miele and Creda tumble dryers to get working. 7. Hoover Autojet dishwasher pipes sealed and testing Heres Mathew (keymatic3203) and Richard (Ricky5050) getting to grips with the English Electric (based on the spacemates model). Heres the timer in situ, its the 2nd generation timer on the sloping front keymatic, its a German made timer made by Holzer and its registration is AU..very advanced for its time as the terminal are placed in block connectors which make for ease of unclipping unlike later Crouzet timers which had all individual contacts..

Soo with the tub front and cast balancing ring removed, the thinking is 2 door boots, one fixed to drum inner lip and one through the front panel connected through the drum weight using a plastic panel which booth boots can be fixed and sealed to....of to the store we go - and the solution is ?
Yup you guessed it - a rigid plant pot cut to the right size...forming a rigid ring of plastic that both boots can be clamped to !! How ingenious is Dr Matt !! |

And now the Electra Creada autowasher ( made by Creda for our national Electricity Board shops) is hauled ou, the back panel and drum removed ready for a bearing change, the seal had gone letting water into the bearings which had then been leaking rusty water all over the backplate , cabinet components and motor - time for a cleanup..

Next day tackling with great gusto the English Electric door boot challenge..
Cutting the rigid plastic ring to fit, cutting back Bendix door seal to fit the EE inner tub, cutting the Servis gasket to fit the front panel and door seal, placing rigid plastic ring through front weight and front tub panel, sealing and securing door boots to inner ring and finally fitting front tub panel metal outer clamp ring !! |

That Rolls takes me back! I remember as a kiddie, my Gran's "Rapide" was stored away under the counter. I twisted the left dial - and was immediately frightened to death when it started ticking! Good work! |

To Al for his hospitality over the weekend the food, company and washers were of the highest order as usual. I'm glad the plant pot trick worked well it's great to see the EE working. I'm guessing all went well with it. Ian. |

it only takes a small repair to get things up and running again.
A case in point was the Zanussi manufactured AEG where a tiny piece of plastic in the door catch assembly shattering - no surprise after 35 years - to render the machine inoperable as the door could not be closed. In a wonderful example of co-operation Mike (Mikeymatic) who, sadly could not join us this weekend, came across a NIB door catch assembly, posted it to me and Richard and Steve (with a couple of words of advice from Mathew) soon had the machine back in full working order again.

There were no issues with the Miele washing machine I got a couple of months back which, when connected to services, sprang to life was soon washing away again, not that there was much to see apart from the time line

Was the matching Miele dryer I got to match it, which although advertised as working, was not selecting the programme properly. I do have an older version, which we used at the weekend for the first time without any problems, so I will have to check back in the manual to see if I can get any hint as to the problem. Oh well, one project starts as another has ended - a familiar tale to many here I am sure .....

Thanks goes to Richard for getting to grips with the Hoover Super-jet dishwasher that we got back in January for identifying a leak arising from a split hose. He got to work to (hopefully) seal the leak - the repair was left to "cure" so we could not actually test it straight away so incremental progress, but progress none the less. This is the only known example of this particular model, so again it is great to she it on the way to full working order.
The Superjet is the model with the black door and interlinking circles |

This is one of the newest additions and in need of a pump transplant for the spinner. Fortunately I had a donor machine to hand (and Ariston single tub which only cost me 99p) which was not working to supply the pump - which did! For a machine which was very much built down to a price it was great to see it washing and spinning again.

Naturally there was laundry to be done and, as you can see from Mike's pictures a few machines were put through their paces - which in itself was fun.
But what a joy it is to get together, sharing knowledge, expertise, inspirations, stories and histories - not just of washers but of many topics - as we know only too well we could easily and quite happily spend the whole weekend chatting away but then the sharing is what it is all about :) |

My original post didn't save!
Yes thanks again to Al for his wonderful hosting of this wash in. Or in this case repair in !! It was fun to get so many machines looked at. At one point I didn't know where to look and dipped in and out of several repairs. Darren you were much missed for your technical skills ! It was great to see everyone too. Richard |

Hi, the holes in the lids are for opening them, early models didnt have handles. Possibly not a good idea sticking your finger in the wash tub lid hole to open it when boiling the whites .I think the one in your profile picture hasnt got handles. They just added handles and left the holes, less tooling up costs.Nigel.

It was a brilliant weekend to meet up with everyone again and thanks again to Al with his superb hosting and hospitality. He is a marvellous cook and the cheese scones were to die for - as were all the other tasty treats too.
It was great to be able to see and help with the repairs although I was also floating about between them all! Was a bit gutted that we didn't manage to crack the Keymatic but at least we now know what's up with it and hopefully it is easily resolvable and it's good to know it's now watertight and leak free - yippee I'm stunned by Mathews dedication to the EE. I missed seeing it's maiden wash but what a great idea for the tub gasket. I'm thinking hard for a mark II repair so if I have a brainwave (unlikely) I'll let you know! Truely amazing. Seeing the Rolls twin tub up and running again made me want a Colston twin tub even more - it's always good to have something a bit different. Til the next time S :) |

Hi Matthew,
I didn't realise further work had been done to it so apologies and thanks are in order in actual fact! :-) I asked if I could leave it there so that folks could finally see one in person I thought it'd be nice for all to get enjoyment. Sorry if my tone appeared angry I just literally meant I wish I'd seen it and I was in the area that day too! Carry on! I am sure you're getting much pleasure from it with it being on your favourite list! I hope to see it and everyone soon! All the best Darren |

Another weekend saw me over at Als place finishing up on some repairs after a trip over to Kings Lynn & beyond with MatchBoxPaul to collect machines and spares from Mark Hill our resident genius of all things Hotpoint, especially the top loader rebuilds.
Mark learned his trade form his father Barrie who was a Hotpoint engineer in the 60`s working on all the prototype and newly launched machines, he then formed a service business with his son Mark and have been supplying schools, colleges and homes throughout the area with renovated and machine repairs to date. Alas Mark and Ali are moving to Gozo for a new life, our loss , their gain. Mark has supplied spares to many of us over the decade and has also been able to machine obsolete parts to keep our machines working, and in many cases made better workarounds that the original parts for our benefit, Many of the Hotpoint top loaders have had complete refurb / re-builds allowing them to carry on working for our washrooms "All The Best" to you Mark in your new venture and "Many Thanks" for all the help and support over the years. pic is Mark & Dad complete with his ERF truck. I did wonder where all the spares were going to go, given that we are pretty much busting at the seams here - still Mikes patient and diligent work got everything sorted (and somewhat compressed) so it was all fitted in without too much problem.
Just as well it was sunny and dry while he was doing it, it would have been a lot harder without space to spread out :) |

Great work guys. What an array of bits and pieces and it's great to see that even the repair guys don't throw anything out - there's always going to be a use for what might seem to be rubbish - well that's what I keep telling myself!!
The Hotpoint top loader line up looks fabulous and glad to see all the parts stored away in the parts warehouse! I think there is a great compliment of skills there with the spreadsheets, organisation and sheer muscle power moving them all about. S :) |

You may be in luck if you have a look on the link below - its not cheap and a bit of a trek for you but the buyer is open to offers.
As for the washer, not impossible but not very likely. And there is a queue. Good luck Al CLICK HERE TO GO TO vacbear58's LINK on eBay |

Thanks for your help, but seems a shame to rob an existing EE dryer for spares, so shall get a different timer and re-wire. Many thanks. |

Hello Buryan, a warm welcome to AW and never a nuisance when asking for help, I dont have the manual covering that particular timer but have flagged it over to people who may be able to help.
A great dryer, very well made from an era when made to last albeit the timer but not doing to badly for 60+ years old. Good to hear you had the washer as well, they are like hens teeth, the dryers just seem to be about all over. Do you have any pics of the washer etc ? Ill get back to you with any help asap, Cheers for now, Mike |

Hello Buryan, Can you please take some pics of the timer you had, and from the top of the dryer the cut wires left and rating plate so we can establish the model number as there where two types of wiring loom, that way we can establish which way is best for getting you fixed up !!
Cheers, Mike

TCM 580 TIMER NO - SORRY - FAILED! I haven't got a switching timer negative and presumably that explains the one terminal unused for which I can't seem to find a circuit anywhere - Help, please! Best wishes, Kenneth. |

Hello Kenneth , sorry that didn't work for you, can you take a pic of the wires that go to the timer ? We need to establish how many wires you have as there where 2 looms for that model ?
Also that timer if I remember is for a condenser dryer with terminals for the drain pump so may not be the best to use for a straightforward dryer timer etc.. Cheers for now , Mike |

Hi Walter,
I would say a bit earlier like 1959/1960. Here’s my stacker set. Cheers Keith

.....thinking about it the dates you suggest are spot on. Grandmother used super rinso powder and if to many suds built up in the drum she would unscrew the plug in the middle of the glass window to let them out; she was notorious for being heavy handed with detergents and appliances in general!! Many thanks Walter. Shropshire, West Mids. |

Hello Kenneth
Have managed to find some info for you , I will scan it tomorrow and post but this may help meantime .. It shows a wiring schematic for dryer but not timer, I would assume they would just be swapped out at source. Also the belts specs : Vee Belt drum / idler ref: M. 40 1/2 inch B.T.R. Vee Belt Motor / Idler ref: M. 39 inch B.T.R. |

Hello great work in the dryer I have one. How are the air seals? They tend to rot and someone did tell
me they are made with asbestos. I replaced mine. I bought large strips of felt that would normally stick to big pieces of furniture to stop floor scratches. My mum sewed them together and formed a v shape in them. They seem to work well. It’s normally the front one that goes first as the heat rots it. Getting the innards out of the cabinet isn’t easy. As it can easily warp. The heat duct has a filter also that can catch fluff mine had some old pre decimal coins in Good Luck Richard |

The answer is no, they were not - the front part painted gold and the rear brown Bakelite, with the large orange foot switch - US members who collect vacuums will know this as the Hoover 115. This model also pre-dates the use of the famous Hoover roundel although I think I have seen some later production of this model with this on the bag. The later, but very similar, 1224 had the from painted cream with the brown Bakelite back painted bright blue. It did use the roundel on the belt cover Al |
