I've been trying out my Downy Blue Ball softener in the Tag. I just realized that if I select "extra rinse" it comes at the end of the cycle after the softener rinse. I will not buy a washer in a hurry again.

Ok, that's just bizarre.

How does this arrangement save money over having the extra rinse first?

With a Downey Ball the softener is dispensed during the first spin, so if you select an extra rinse you will always be rinsing out the fabric softener with the second rinse.

I stopped using fabric softener altogether about 5 mos. ago and use wool dryer balls with scented essential oils in the dryer instead. I much perfer this over the fabric softener. The clothes feel much better, the towels dry better and the essential oil leaves a very faint scent. Google wool dryer balls and check out the different feedback. You may decide you like them better than using Downey.

The Tags are soon to be history

Both the washer and dryer have pissed me off for the last time. I'm going to try to afford a Speed Queen set but as a backup I found this GE. Does anyone have any experience with it?

Sorry, my mistake. I know you said downy ball but I was still thinking the washer was dispensing it.

Most traditional top-loading washers with an agitator dispenser will also do that.

To dispense on the last rinse (if you select more than one), it needs to have an independent dispenser that is flushed with water to dispense.

And even then, I have friends that hate when the softener is dispensed on the last rinse -- they want to have at the very least one rinse after softening to remove most of the "chemicals".
