this is a biggie frome, sorryif i waffle but got lots to say.
and before you ask i am not insane.

it appears to me that the wow factor in washing machines only appear to be every 6 to 8 years with increases of 400rpm each time.
my parents first washer in the early 80s was i frigidaire auto possibly i think i remember with a 600spin. which would of been average in terms of the speed across the various makes.

hoover was in at its 740 - 800s but hoover was always 100 to 200rpm faster with its basics anyway.
think electron and logic ranges usually being 1100 - 1200 the most popular although there were 1000rpm about.

servis came along with the quartz in 1980 with its 1000 which would of been a mega breakthrough and one of the fastest machines out.(i have seen the debate posted about the first manufacteurer to reach 1000. but anyway it would have still been pretty fast for an automatic.

continuing

aquarius1984's profile picture
so when my parents bought the candy domino 4 at 1000 rpm the extra speed would have possibly wowed them even though it was 1988.although by now 1000 is the norm speed with hoover etc bringin out the logic 1300 as a standard setter.
Still with me?

now although by the time the candy packed up it was well instilled that any machines above 1100rpm were to be avoided for various breakdowwn reasons so although faster mahines were available they stuck with a 1050 electrolux. i dont think they even saw the faster machines anyway when they chose this anyway in 1992.

roll on 8 years to jan 2000 when the electrolux packed up my folks were wowed that the fastest spins were up to 1400 and put all prejuces to one side and purchased a hoover 1300.
this did 2 years and packed up. enough said.
prjudiced we sourced a 1000 hotpoint wm62 and this did well for the 3 years. but the brushes went and it was scrapped at christmas.

but now you cant find a 1000 rpm anywhere (the odd zanussi essential and tricity bendix) so it looks like the basic is 1200 which is what we got with the LG.
does this still make sense?

it now apperas to me the wow factor is 1500rpm plus.
1200 to 1400 being the norm.
so what does the future hold will the 1600 become the norm in the future?
are we able to make decent 1600s and will they last?

also the water level debate is up and down. the LG at present has what i call a useless cotton water level and i love the high fill it uses on the synthtic cycle. being 1/3 way up the door.

views on a tinternet post card please.....

and finally.
where can i see your pictures. would love to see pics of all you uk guys machines. can you e mail them over to me.my computer and internet use is very basic. have difficulty accessing videos etc.

want pics of quartz and purple hotties etc
also what was the hole in the back of a hoover drum all about?
were the bearings not there and how was the water stopped from getting inside the berarings and rotting them/

Lavamat john and other high water level fans......
surely waterlevels halfway up the door puts great strains on the motor, bearings atc and lead to rotten bearings surely?

Spin Speeds

Interesting stuff about the spin speeds, imagine when all you had was a Bendix or Zanussi with 500rpm, of course most people also had the creda debonair of old or frigidaire, or even a thermair spinner with a heater on top!!!

The spin speed wars started in:

Hotpoint model 1600 with 1100rpm in 1970!!!!
Hoover A3060, 1100rpm in 1978
Servis 1000 in 1983

The Hotpoint (Hotpernt!!) pictured below had the "Timeline" controls like the UK Toploader or Norge etc as well as powder dispenser on the top, looks a classy machine dont you think!!

Hello Nick.
You say you're interested in purple Hotties - I have a slightly later machine which isn't purple (from 79/80) but is very similar mechanically to the purples. I used a purple which my nan had and the operation is almost identical. I'm glad to answer any questions you have about it, and will try to get some film of it within a month or so.
From (another) Nick!

Miele had 900-1100RPM by 78 or so.

The average speed over here is now about 800RPM for TL and between 1000-1400 for FL.
