This looks like something you would want on a houseboat or vacation home, but necessarily as a daily driver. I wonder if they worked as well as the Westinghouse Spacemates.

Frigidaire made this machine to fit into tight places 24" wide or wider. If you had power, even 120 volts and plumbing you could put one there. They worked reasonably well and washed, rinsed and spun out about as well as most top loaders. They had a solid "agitub" made out of plastic and held about half of what most top load machines would hold at the time. The dryer was smaller too, but would dry as much as the washer could wash. Probably the Westinghouse space mates would hold more and probably washed it about as well. Their claim to fame was that they would fit into such a confined space. They did require a vent for the dryer though and most of their units were 220/240 volt although they were available in just 120 volt too that took longer to dry. There was an apartment complex where I live that had them in all the apartments they had. They did have servicing problems and were difficult to service because in the beginning they only opened from the back. The dryers had bakelite around the front of the drum including the lint filter housing that would easily break if something got caught on it, like a bra strap or clasp from overalls, etc... After WCI bought them in 1979 they incorporated a Franklin/WCI mechanism in the washer and made them for many years. Those units seemed to hold up better in heavy usage. These units were really designed for people who did not have any space for a traditional washer and dryer. Unfortunately, many people who got them used them constantly and wore them out quickly due to over usage. They were good for a single person or a couple that didn't have an excessive amount of laundry. It was something that had never been done before in such a narrow unit.
