Sounds like maybe a broken belt? The buzzing could be from the motor engaging, but without an intact belt the drum can't turn. And if the dryer is over 17 yrs old without a belt replacement I'll bet thats what it is. I replaced a belt on a Whirlpool portable dryer about 40 yrs ago, with no You Tube for support, it wasn't that hard. I think you may be able to handle this. Good Luck!

If it's like my 99 GE gas dryer, you pop the top, then the front front off and the motor is on the left hand side bottom. The hardest part is getting the drum out/in because it's so bulky. Youtube is your friend. |

You have a bad motor, GE dryer motors are know for this. Try turning the drum by hand, sometimes the motor will start after you do this.
You can also hold the door switch in and hit the start Sw while turning the drum CCW to start the dryer if you need to get clothing dried. It does take three hands to this or a helper.
If this works you can tape a quarter over the door SW and then turn the drum with one hand while you hit the start SW. This way you can use the dryer till you decide if you want to put in a new motor or get a better dryer. |

I had the top and front off my sisters GE dryer a few years back when I put new front drum supports in so taking this one apart is no big deal. I did turn the drum when the buzzing happened yesterday which didn't make a difference. But not while turning the knob to start. I'll give that a try and see if it runs.
