Looks like a fairly BOL model - it also looks like it has the troublesome electric latching system seen on Tappan dishwashers of this era.  Seller sounds as if a reasonable offer will be accepted.

Get the blue towel!

Now that's BOL jackpot.   One knob wonder, woodgrain and the all-but hidden delight of an electric latch?!

a GE clone? Or D&M?

Definitely not a GE clone from this era, but I don't think it was a D&M design either.  Tappan had some pretty far-out designs like the roller-washer-splasher, then the wash arm on a spring that would wind up as the arm rotated, then would either a: break or b: unwind and spray in the reverse direction.   I believe the former happened more often than the latter.... LOL

not a clone

This one one of those weird Tappan designed units with the pop-up tower and plastisol tubs. After this, Tappan sourced their dishwashers from Whirlpool, GE and WCI. I don't think I've ever seen a D&M based Tappan DW

Steve, I went to a wedding reception in Houston in the early 1980s (1981 or 1983) and the kitchen definitely had a Tappan near TOL produced by D&M.  No mistaking the sound of a D&M.

I stand corrected.....

You are right, I found a full line Tappan catalog from 1982 and sure enough a D&M designed DW. They also sourced later models that were copies of the Frigidaire models prior to the introduction of the tall-tubs

Just one knob to turn your Stardust Washing Dreams ....

Turning and turning
The washer goes on.
We can't change it, my friend.
Let us go washing all through the days,
Together to the end, to the end.
Les bicyclettes de Belsize

Turn your magical knob
Round and around,
Looking at all we found.
Carry us through the soap,
Les bicyclettes de Belsize.
Spinning and spinning,
The dishes I know,
Rolling on through my head.
Let us enjoy them, before they break
Come the dawn, they all are clean
Yes, they're…D&M clean...

(ok, shoot me, I couldn't resist borrowing Englebert's song)

When we were building custom homes in the late 70's the standard appliance pak included TOL Tappan appliances. The DW were WP and really good (stove not so much). But along about '79 the DW switched rebadged DM. Lots of complaints, mainly because buyer were smart enough to know the difference.

Steve, thank you.  I remember all the way back then wondering what all those buttons had cycles for.  I couldn't do that--go into the kitchen and snoop around a running dishwasher--at a wedding reception with wide-open view.

Thanks for the pics, Steve, I have seen the D&M machines branded Tappan and have seen many GE made versions in apartments, etc. but don't think I've seen one made by Whirlpool.

D & M

turquoisedude's profile picture

was actually the name of a company - Design & Manufacturing.  I believe they spun out from Avco, aka American Kitchens; the American Kitchens cabinets had their own brand dishwasher which was made by D&M.  D&M went on to produce machines for brands such as Whirlpool (only for 1 year, 1957), Admiral, Chambers, Kelvinator, Roper, and most notably, Kenmore (until the mid-70s).    The idea was to add a dishwasher to complete an appliance manufacturer's line-up.

Hope this helps!
