Some complain that ALDI's house brands are deceptively close in appearance to national brands. Lidl seems to have gone way in the other direction. Pretty stark, eh? Can't you already hear snooty dinner guests whispering behind your back about how you've fallen on hard times?
Hey, if it's good stuff, I don't care. Might have to wait a while to compare ALDI to Lidl here in Sunny SoCal. No sign that we're even on Lidl's radar.

I was on my way to have lunch with friends at Pinocchio's in downtown Palm Springs when I noticed a relatively new Aldi. I always see their ads mixed in with all the other market's circulars. I will have to give them a try.

Leapfrogging the eastern reaches of the great Midwest, Lidl has set its sights on Texas, putting them just two states away from Sunny CA. Scroll down for the map.

Joe, would you happen to be in the above photo?
My HEB has ceased stocking King Arthur's White Whole Wheat Flour and also their premium house brand whole wheat all-purpose baking mix. I've not been able to locate online something similar to the baking that doesn't cost an arm and a leg. I'm pretty pissed. I can order online/home delivery the King Arthur at Walmart. |

. . . thinking these might be generic placeholders provided by Lidl's suppliers until I paged through an online ad. It's for real. CLICK HERE TO GO TO JoeEkaitis's LINK |

I don't see where there's much room for Lidl in Aldi's core markets--the east coast and southeast where there's a wounded low-end operator (Food Lion/Winn-Dixie/BI-LO) is probably a reasonable area for success, but places with a reasonable representation of Aldi and Trader Joe's and healthy mass competitors (HEB/Schnucks/Kroger/Jewel/...) will probably shrug it off.

Well, right after they get rid of that eyesore of an abandoned restaurant and, uh, build the place.
I'll . . . I'll be going now.
