Hi all,

Does anyone know whether Maytag Highlander washers came with the PowerFin agitator, or was that an upgrade? When I was a kid my mom had a Highlander that had been her mothers. I remember it having a black Bakelite agitator that was very narrow, identical to the ones used in the wringer washers. Since I've joined AW, any time I've seen a pic of a Highlander set, it always has a PowerFin. Just curious how this particular model of machine evolved. Appreciate any insight that anyone has to offer on the subject.

Well, they originally came with either the goose-neck or the standard fixed-fin filter Gyratator. Mine (a '64 A300) has the filter and is a single-speed. I have seen others that have the goose-neck that are two-speed. So go 'figya.

When the newer generation came out in '66 the BOL's still had the fixed-fin Gyratator. I'm thinking the 100 and 200 series.I have a '68 106 with an (all-black) Fixed-Fin Filter Gyratator. So they must have had a lot of old stock to use up before switching to the Power-Fin across the board. Towards the end-of-the-road they were putting a turquoise lint-filter/Fabric Softener cup on the Black Gyratator that looked pretty silly.

Depended on the model

My Mom's Maytag was a 2 speed, 3 temperature, 3 water level with suds return. No lights or other bells and whistles. Her's had the skinny 4 blade black agitator like they used on the wringers. My Aunts was a similar model, feature wise, but had a lighted console so was higher up the food chain. Her Maytag had the 4 vane agitator with the wider post that incorporated the lint filter in it.
