Time flies so quickly and another grand visit to the Northern area of our country, Consett, County Durham visiting Richard (Ricky5050) where we spent a weekend in the sunshine (unlike last time in the rain, see thread) fixing up new / old washers and sorting out what needs to be done....

I get to grips on looking at the Hoover Keymatic timer which has the same fault as a few of our members in that a resistor burns out (well it is original from 1961) so not allowing the timed portion of the cycle to proceed ie the fill heat works but the timed 4 or 8 mins wont... we now identify that Richards timer is the 2nd upgrade for this the model the AT model original was AU model ) which still has the larger timer, a clear Perspex moulded cover which is riveted to the timer and is a 36 impulse sequence timer as opposed to the later upgrade with 42 impulse sequences.

Following Ginger beer and cakes its back to work, the Hoover is coming apart nicely, a new door boot fitted courtesy of Qualtex our main parts supplier, the door boot is a DBT14 for reference...

Steve has finished the upgrade to the Hotpoint toploader and Richards sorts the laundry for a test wash...and we test out the latest "Persil Bio PowerGems" detergent from Unilever UK....Richard had used them in the new Bosch with some of the gems sticking in the door boot with not enough flushing water action !!

Said Hoover Steam Cleaner did a great job on removing the grime and crud for the inside and outside of the Hoover MicroElectronic, made easy work of the detergent tray and dispenser. And we used the new Persil PowerGems in the bucket of water, once dissolved the water was very slippy and did a great job and getting through the dirt.

The Hoover starts to be rebuilt and with help from our resident Hoover Engineer Gary, we get the dispenser and wiring loom sorted after re-fitting the console and inner computer control board..

The Miele wash is under way with the Rosalie`s Zero Sudsz detergent, and yes it really has "No Suds" effect, if you look closely you can see the water change from harsh to a soft slippy solution..We washed a mixture darks bedding on Cottons 60d with Quick Wash selected and all turned out fresh and clean, Rosalie`s Zero Suds only requires "One Scoop" which is tiny - we did look at each other and psychologically thought "Is That Enough" - But is is !!

Good Morning Jim, glad to oblige, we do like our gatherings and as ever all these vintage washers need tending to on a regular basis to keep in working order, for me its about the social meetup and banter with like minded people that become friends while fixing these machines and sharing the knowledge..
Yes we are all in aw of Richards kitchen and home, its a delight to be in and as ever his hospitality is second to non. yes a rota of wash vacations - although am embarrassed to say when Jon & Don where over recently I only had a few hrs catchup with Jon and didn't get any pics (too busy having a good time) to display like this... | ||

Hoover ready for its maiden wash....which passed great until the final spin, Gary diagnosed just by the sound until he checked that the heater bracket was loose, luckily the heater was slapping against the outer tub instead of the spinning inner drum..

Yes, another lovely weekend in County Durham.
Thanks to Richard for hosting us but a big thank you to his mother who hosted us in her beautiful home - Richard must get his talent for home making from his mother. And for making us traditional meat pies from scratch, all home made and simply delicious - she ticked the box for no publicity so there are no photos here - it was very kind of her to put up with us for the weekend. Great machines, great food, great company, a great weekend :) Al | ||

Thanks to all that came and brought your gifts knowledge and company !! I'd gladly have more but my house isn't huge and as Al says a lot of the day we were along at my mums as it's there I've made a mini wash house in her laundry room. The weather was great which helped so much as it had rained all week.
Lots of machines tinkered with and with more care and diligence than I'd have time to invest in. And thanks to all who took photos and Mike for the patience of uploading them and rembering to take them as we went along as I usually forget. Thanks again everyone for making it happen ! Richard | ||

Well we had a FANTASTIC time and such fun . Many many thanks again Richard for hosting the weekend . You always make us so welcome and make sure we enjoy ourselves ! It's always great to work on others machines and keep them going ! Your mum Is a mega star for putting up with us and allowing the takeover of her home and garden by obsessive washer collectors . !!! The place looked like a Chinese laundry by Sunday afternoon with all that bedding and towels .
Your wash room is super and perfectly formed with the right amount of vintage machines !!! ( the Bendix still is the best ever) !!!!!!!! Lovely food , machines but most of all such brilliant friends . Thanks again | ||

It was a CRACKING weekend (literally!). So much fun and laughter and a great chance to fix'n'play with superb hosting by Richard and his Mam and lots of lovely treats too. Totally spoilt I still laugh to myself when we went to look at the back of Richards house to see if there was any sign of the northern lights and a great big 1000w floodlight came on and blinded us!!
Great thread too Mike. I know Mikey was in love with that Computer control but that picture looks well dodgy of him filling it up!! Just a shame about that pesky heater bracket but we'll get it sorted. Just as well we didn't try and get those lenses out - I was wrong about the diagram. Have checked it and it came as one unit! Also confirms the OOB and flood alarm too

Lap top next to the bed, I read this "Immediately upon arising" as the Royal Doultons would say. What a grand treat. Never got out of bed! The fetching mysterious blue tubbed twinny had me so curious, was satisfied in the end to learn its identity. Loved the not bratwurst, but yes we have cakes, and a perfunctory salad, too, for the health conscious.
And the shot of the rainbow sunrays on the field--so magical! But I Was jumping for glee with the man in apron, Richard, I think, wringing in the empress whose wringer sports a nice Sunday bonnet, and then the pic of Queen Elizabeth decaled on the tub--too much, made my day, Aworg personified! Hats off to you guys for the fanciful, delightful "Weekend at Richard's." Appreciate all the hard work, and reveled in your obvious comraderie. By the way, who ever said that only plumbers show their cracks? And Is this why John Lefevre has so many repeat customers, decades in the making, in his repair business. Hi Ian the hotpoint was scrapped , I got the motor for Steve and that was about it. It had done its job after 28 years so we let it go. Mikeyd the guy in the apron is our good friend Darren in my kitchen playing with the empress. He had all the bedding stripped washed and on the line in less than an hour !

Thanks, Ricky. Was having so much fun in my happy pants that I missed some names, but they're all there in a perfect thread. Preachin' to the choir about churning out wash in a wringer. Nothing quicker, nothing better especially if you have two, one to wash, one to rinse. Heaven! And Oh the drama of wringing with the water gushing and the bubbles squeezing.

If that's one of the Downy balls I brought, I'm glad to see it's been road tested and put to use in Richard's lovely example of a 9605. How did you find it worked for you?
Yep, I discovered my 96700 from 1984 was designed to agitate intermittently during temp-sensed filling on warm washes (around 7 seconds of agitation per minute, the same as wash & rinse agitation when "gentle action" is selected). I didn't like it doing this. I disabled it with the helpful advice from Steve. It still senses the temp during filling and only opens the cold valve once the correct temp is reached.

Yellowed plastic
You can use hair bleach and the sun (or a black-light) to whiten the parts chemically. Here is a video on YouTube about it.

Greg - as ever when we all get together trouble is time just runs short...at least we managed to road test "Rosalie`s Zero Suds, report to follow !! Richard 1983 - Ta and see you at the next one at Als, ya need a washer fix, don't forget the powder ha ha... "Oh Steve", now ya tell us ha ha...just as well Mikey was on the ball otherwise it would have been in bits, I too was convinced it did, theres Hoover for ya if you can make it simplified - DONT !! Ian, many where modified out in the field by customer request or when being serviced !!I can see why they would use a front loader new gen timer for cost though !! | ||

What can I say, you would have a blast am sure with all those different fangled washers as well as the vintage kitchen in Richards n Darrens home, (who is the guy using the wringer in said pinny !!). The Hotpoint Empress was the workhorse of the UK laundry market, millions sold, my gran had one in 1952 although have just realised this is a later model with the rounded blue enamel tub, the first models had a hexagonal aluminium tub !! And also the first Hotpoint twintub, quite unique at the time in with the fiberglass spinner tub and filterflow, the spirallator came later. The control knobs on these washers are fragile and remember the ones I found with you when we went To see Larry at his parts store in Ohio, they where used on cookers but they are a perfect match !! As when we all meet up (cant believe its 9 yrs since we did @ Hoover 100, its all great fun and sharing of knowledge and information, AND as parts are getting rarer its the workarounds and ingenious ways of fixing stuff that amazes me !! Mikey - ta for the link, Hoover steam cleaner ordered, ya played a blinder with yours !! Hi Mark, we took a selection of detergents up to Richards to share, use and keep there, a duplicate bottle of toploader Tide and the said Downey ball that you kindly brought over last time so we could use in the upgraded Hotpoint Toploader and twinny. Looking forward to catching up soon... Hi Craig (Optima) we ran out of time to complete all the stuff we needed to this time, Mikey steam cleaned the buttons of grime, interestingly the button least used was the "RESET" button, which was whiter than the others, must be the grease from fingers etc that reacts as well as the plastics used to cause yellowing. Have you used the bleaching method Craig ? Thanks Richard (SpeedQueen) for the video link, have seen that and we discussed using those chemicals for next time !! | ||

Morning Pete ah yes will be great to catch up with you again and yes when the sun is shining this is Gods own country, Pelton Fell is about 30 mins from Richards, stunning scenary, the local councils have brought back the "Wild Flower Borders" along the roads, a simply stunning difference it makes and a big push in making it lush for the bees and wildlife !!

Durham Weekend Washer Get a Way
Wow, its looks like you guys had a great time again, I feel so lucky to have gotten to meet some of you last month and can't wait to come visit again.I had so much fun working on a few of Als appliances, I always like to take apart new and different appliances.
If you are planning another event this year I may be able to fly over with just a week or twos notice. I am diffidently going to try to come over in May 18 for Euro-tour in the UK. | ||
