Seller calls in an "old oven used for drying parts". Controls and interior look suspiciously high-tech.

Oh my! That's a real old microwave for sure.  I have seen ones like this in old Better Homes & Gardens magazines.   I'd have to guess it's late 50s or early 60s.

Now, who can save it???

You can see the cursive Westinghouse brand name on the door front.  the knobs look exactly like those on the cook top & wall oven in the house across the street from ours in 1961.

Yes, yes it is.

John has one in Beltsville, I believe.

Here is the link to the epherma section with the brochure for 1960. I believe these were made by Tappan (conveniently also in Mansfield, OH).

This one would be water cooled, and it was indeed built by Tappan.

I talked to the seller earlier today and bought this oven from him, hopefully it will have the part I need to fix the one I already have and a good browner element for Anthony's Tappan MWO in Michigan.

So, you're going to scrap it??

I don't know- that looks to cool to scrap for a couple of parts. There's nothing that can be subtituted for the parts you need?

I don't know what I will do with this MWO, but there are now 5 of these in the club and none are in fully working condition, so if one gets parted out it will not be a great loss, after all this one was on Craigslist for over a month and was about to get sold for scrap.

Yeah, I understand

I tend to get unrealistic sometimes about this old stuff. Definitely better to save it from the scrappers even if only for parts to get others going. I would imagine that a water cooled magnetron has been unavailable for quite some time!

Another question does the oven have the mercury vapor tubed rectifier?

I believe these are mercury vapor rectified. When I restored my '63 Mark V, I was able to substitute a different set of gas-filled tubes to avoid the mercury-vapor tube "issues". Switching to SS would be blasphemy! ; )

Mercury Vapor Rectifiers

As if the liquid cooled Magnetron wasn't enough already, now you guys have made me REALLY want one of these machines!!

I presume that these run at the lower frequency of, what was it, 900 megacycles or thereabouts?

I am thinking that this one is too new with its white knobs to have rectifier tubes any longer, I have one just like it that has an issue or two, I also have one that is a little older that had a lot of use, so at least one will get parted out and I can make everyone else happy that need parts for these old MWOs.

John would be right it should not have tubes. This MWO should be just like the 1962 Tappan that Kevin rescued for me. John I really hope this MWO has all the parts that you need to get the one you have working. I’m glad to see one more saved even if it’s a parts donor.

Gut Wrenching Story!

In the middle of it, after reading about those beautiful old machines being scrapped, I was sick, and sorry I had read it. I am so glad that the story had a happy ending!

What a cool find. This is really interesting to me. I hope you can get something from it to make the other work, John. That's just a neat piece of history.

Just as a side-note, though I started looking at appliances more in my high school years, than the early 60's, I didn't know this MW was made(apparently more, too, than I'm aware).

Nice find, Ken. Good luck John. We'd all like to see one working. And Cadman, I'm always impressed, jealous and happy to see the things you find and restore.

What brand of MW is that? It is sure a cool monster. My favorite features are gathered in my photo cluster. Thanks for posting.

LIGHTNING BOLT! This looks like a refrigerator, so besides asking the brand, how tall is this mw? Thank you.

John, if you decide to let it go. I'm interested. I've been looking for one for a couple of years now. This one didn't show up in my searches! Doh! That's what I get for taking a couple of weeks off from A.W. I've got the perfect spot for it.
