I just posed the service manual from 1967 to Frigidaire washer model WXL. It's the first variable speed Frigidaire washer and describes how the solid-state variable speed clutch works, along with the roller-matic transmission.
One of my favorite things in this manual is this little tid-bit lol!...

mechanism a disc type friction clutch was used,a magnetic coil providing pressure on the clutch discs-voltage to the coil modulated by a transistorized circuit monitoring clutch output RPM-a very high slippage rate for low speeds with this arrangement :) | ||

Durable speed control I cannot imagines this speed control arrangement being very durable. Especially with prolonged use at low speeds. There must have been something that needed repair frequently not to continue making such a speed control that was variable. | ||

But,VACUUMING the sand out your washer blows. Sometimes the sand is hiding from the 'shakeout'. | ||
