Combo, the Equators have "convertable" drying. Vented or Non Vented. I would love to see the guts of one of those. I had the Equator 1100 (1000?) years ago, hubby hated it! | ||

Sears selling Combos----but for how long?When Sears DOES go belly up-who will take care of warrantee issues?Yes,agree with John-these should be made for 220-240V.Or even 208V for folks living in multifamily homes that have 208/120V 3Ph service. | ||

Those Equator Combo Units
Were all over NYC/NJ and so forth area back in the 1990's and maybe even the 1980's.
They were a solution to a problem (small space for a washer and dryer), but often were more trouble than they were worth. Many simply used the units as a washer only and opted for a small Whirlpool/Kenmore or other portable dryer. Have told this story before and it is somewhere in the archives: "Are just some of the brand names under the Merloni Group's umbrella. However there are two branches, apparently the senior Merloni divided his empire between two sons. One group owns Asko amoung other brands, the other Malber and Equator. Steam: Equator and Malber combo units were pretty much the same back then. Neither used steam to "clean", but rather were front loading washing machines with condensor drying systems. Such systems required a fan (blower) and merely turned the hot air from the wash into water, which was pumped out of the washer." www.automaticwasher.org/cgi-bin/T... To flesh out that story even further you'll need to sit down, grab some coffee or tea, and follow a twisted and complicated tale. Antonio Merloni Group manufactures "economy" white goods, this would have included Malber. AMG also purchased Asko back in 2000, but not sure if they still own that brand. Meanwhile his brother's (Andrea Merloni) company Merloni Elettrodemestici has the brands of Ariston, Indesit, and Scholtes among others. Merloni Elettrodemestici was the company founded by Aristide Merloni, and run by his son Vittorio Merloni (father of the two above brothers), who died in 2016. Merloni Elettrodemestici has since changed their company name to "Indesit" Getting back to Malber and Equator units; they were produced by Philco Italia, a company that was bounced around before being slowly fully acquired by Merloni Group. That is where the above comment about Merloni Group producing "economy white goods" comes in. Philco/Bendix washers and combo units (IIRC) were sold all over Europe. Just some additional facts: The Antionio Merloni Group or Ardo doesn't exist anymore. They went into administration in 2008 and the company was totally ended in 2010. Several parts of the company were sold off, like Asko, that was acquired by Gorenje.
The Indesit company doesn't exist either anymore as such. Whirlpool bought up 67% of the stock from the Vittorio Merloni family in 2014. Vittorio Merloni died in 2016. There is a third brother (actually older than Vittorio and Antonio), Francesco Merloni. He owned the company that was the original business, making cylinders for fluid gas etc. His son Paolo is now leading the company with the name Ariston Thermo. The eldest one was a sister, Ester, but I don't know much about her. | ||

What I know (or learned) about combo machines:
Long ago, in the last era of Combos, was a GE-built Kenmore, as well as one branded General Electric, in its own right...
However, it was said to have had a few deficiencies, among them how reliability was questionable... Before Philco (Ford, not Bendix) had given up in the laundry industry they were building a sound-machine, that alas, after its sad reputation, saw no buyers... -- Dave | ||

Well, in my book it stated that (quote) "Philco (later, Philco-Bendix) developed a machine that was expensive to buy and reliability was questionable, whereas GE and Kenmore were making a trouble-free machine that due to public confidence in led to the demise of an otherwise worthwhile appliance..."
So, I equated that the Kenmore appliance was built by GE, unless Whirlpool built its combos right after discontinuing its own, then... Otherwise, coincidental that both brands should be independently produced & marketed, although unrelated? Sorry to have no way of wording, and, yes, not enough factual backing either then... You'd think there'd be other earlier attempts, but with the demise of the single machine doing the work of both the washer and dryer, became the introduction of the Westinghouse compacts and Frigidaire dual models, in that same era... -- Dave | ||

When Merloni Group Took Over Asko
All heck broke loose! *LOL*
Quality of the once famous Asko brand took a nose dive, at least here in USA. IIRC there was also a clone brand "Eurotech" that offered a W/D combo unit. Either way things were a hot mess. Despite having a USA based (Texas?) sales/parts office owners of those Asko units frequently complained of poor quality. Certainly not the stuff of old from when Asko and Miele pretty much had the USA European laundry machine market to themselves. Wait I tell a lie, there was Creda as well. | ||
