Thanks. What makes the Maytags of that vintage superior to the Whirlpools? Thanks! |

True, the problem with vintage washers and dryers is that something 50 years old many times can have brittle seals and rubber parts and parts for those machines would be difficult to find. |

The most trouble-free "daily drivers" in my collection are the 1953 WO-65-2, the 1963 WCI, (Frigidaires) and the 1964 Maytag A300 Highlander. I found that Maytag as an appliance store demonstrator in its original box about twelve years ago, in Cumming, Georgia. |

grabbing the washer, and then searching for a matching dryer is not always easy.....most times easier to go with a matched set from the start and you will have that one knocked out...
reply 11 is from the early 80's....my preference for these, yet I like them both... reply 13 is from the early 90's note too, both dryers are electric... |

Welcome, nice to see a fellow Tennessean here. Kenmore/Whirlpools are good machines, but I'm partial to Maytags myself. Mother's is 23 years old but hasn't walked yet and it's on a wood floor. Mother-in-law's is about the same age and she's only had one repair...the lid switch. And hers is on a wood floor too. |

Maytags don't walk, unless the leveling feet aren't level. The only thing that happened to the 1997 Maytag Dependable Care washer that was at my old house, is the washer moved itself away from the wall, and it flooded the garage (no water damage done, and it was not a hose burst), and it turns out the leveling feet weren't level :P.

What are the pros and cons of orbital vs helical transmissions? |

Orbitals only have 3 or 4 moving parts inside them but they agitate faster than the previous transmissions Maytag used. The agitators themselves are a little different too. This video below shows the internals of the older transmission design at 1:40. Seeing it sure helped me to understand what was going on inside the case of my mother's old 1966 Maytag washer.
Below is a video from Lee Maxwell's washing machine museum and at 4:40 demonstrates the two transmissions side by side. He refers to the orbital trans as helical in the video.
And here www.nettally.com/palmk/Maytag%20T... is another website comparing the two. Below--Maytag also used a different transmission in their Performa line of washers. Forward to 7:06 to see the internal workings of it. From what I've read and heard the Performa's were very much cheapened and didn't hold up as well which caused much damage to Maytag's once stellar reputation.
I hope this helps explain a little better. If I have anything wrong please correct me as most of you have much more repair experience with these than I do.

NIB, new in box, without the box, and with the rare wringer agitator in a Maytag automatic, to boot. Look at that tub sparkle! How beautiful the earlier dark tubbed and agitatored machines were. We rarely see what they actually looked like when new. Wonderful, wonderful find. Hope someone gets it at that great price. What a smoking' deal !

Right on the ball as ever, Dear, and thank you so much. Oh do I have a tale to tell you. Biker friends are going to Lake Luzerne tomorrow for four days and I've been on the fence about going. Well, that was the case UNTIL I SAW THE MAP. And guess what's right there? None other than Queensbury New York home of the infamous Appliances Unlimited where I got that beautiful doeskin Whirlpool Mark 12 from.
So this was the dealbreaker /clincher and now I'm going. Hoping to bring back lots of pictures for you and all of us, I called the owner to let them know I was coming down to survey the vintage treasure. He said everything is gone except a few Maytags and that all the Frigidaires were bought by somebody from Canada. Do you have any info on that or is there a tread about it? The store's website is totally out of date with the Mark XII still for sale even though I've been using it for 6 or 7 years now. It's fun to see all those gems albeit long gone. Will stop in nonetheless to see what parts he may still have. Maybe I'll get lucky and find a Frigidaire agitator column with pretty new rings. REG: Good luck to you, Man. Go for the Maytag Mark Posted. You'll be the envy of the club, and the machine will be around after I'm long gone ;'D |

if this is a machine on your wish list, and found NIB, what more could you ask?....
how hard would it be to do a multi day trip/adventure into acquiring this gem of a machine..... many times over the years we have seen members travel farther, for less....just to capture their dream machine.... I know a few members who travelled and slept along side the road in the excursions..... and some stopped to visit other members along the way....... if you want it bad enough, anything is possible....you will find a way.... |

It has the faster short stroke agitation, and works flawlessly. It washes extremely well, with a 2 minute spray rinse after wash, and a 2 minute deep rinse. Its easy on the clothes, and has a lint filter in the agitator, that works very well. I think the performance of all machines, is mainly dictated by your washing habits. You can get poor washing results out of any washer. Overloading, poor sorting, and wrong chemicals mixtures can effect results greatly. Many people, of this club, have strong opinions from time to time, about brands, models, quality or performance of certain brands. I myself know that they can be very knowledgeable, and often opinionated as well. Read the reviews, and weigh all the info, and come to your own decision. Hope this helps. Help can be reached at any time, by a quick post. Hope this helps.
Hugs, David |

You should be able to find a matching dryer relatively easily in comparison to finding a washer like this. It could well be the last washer you have to buy. This post was last edited 09/27/2017 at 21:22 |

Many of the older BOL Maytag washers like this one had black tubs with white speckles. I think back then it was either white tub or this one. |

Here's my question about this old machine. It has been sitting for awhile unused. What will I need to do to insure it to work properly and not break something just plugging it up and turning it on.Things get quirky when not used for periods of time. |

for starters, I would boil a few large pans of water and pour into the machine and let set for a while.....check for any leaks....
when I got my 806, it was sitting unused for the greater part of 12 years, upon first fill, water dribbled from the center post...... JohnL offered the boiling water idea.....it softened everything up and re-sealed, been working fine ever since.... check clamps for any rusting, replace if needed...... motor glides may not need replaced, but the lube may be dried out.... always curious of this machine, having time fill, yet is not a solid tub, how do you match the fill to the time without overflowing the machine? |

No, this is a timed fill and doesn't have any kind of float or metered fill. On the dial it shows F for full, 3/4 and 1/2 fills. The timer does it all. |
