Its that time of year again everyone and it has just flown since the last gathering 2016. A much smaller clan this year as our host is having building works done, so it was making sure everything secure and packed away ready for a big build which will see the appliance display space much increased for more fun !!

The washroom has fallen fowl of the Unimatic "One in One Out" rule and is rammed to the gills, (How Do You Choose) soo out comes the gazebo and all spare is under the stars, which works quite well in the garden, the sight of all those appliances being worked on and used makes the neighbours smile !!

Dr Mathew again surprised us all with a thoroughly useful "Made By Himself" repair implement, after SESteves repair weekend and us not able to get the spin can out of the AEG Lavalux twintub because of a stuck locking nut...It appears Dr Mathew puzzelled over it whilst dunking biscuits and came up with this large nut spanner, made to exact length, welded and tested by himself. How genius is that !!

This will hopefully make light work of getting the spin can out, you can apply much more torque to the can nut in a restricted area, We think he should market it ha ha..

Unloaded out of the boot is my "Free To Me" Hotpoint Liberator 1826 washing machine, these where made by Zanussi and filled a gap in the 1970`s model lineup after a major fire at the Hotpoint Peterborough factory destroyed all the spares and dies for the existing range of washing machines..
The once over reveals it needs new bearings which are available and a hole in the vitreous enamel outer tub which can be sealed with plastic metal when the tub is out for bearings renewal. Add To The List !!

No, Not a birthday cake, nowthen like the spacemates the door boots have long perished and supplies are nil. So in another universe Mathew sat thinking, in his line of theatre props work they use rubber latex moulds, so ever the champion he has been trying out different molds and additives to see if a sample could be constructed of the original door boot for the English Electric.
Heres the machine, getting it ready to try.

I think we can all agree what marvels can be achieved through determination and dreamy thoughts over cups of tea and dunkin biscuits. many thanks to Mathew for his hard work, time and cost to move this project forward.
More work to be done, some of the sectional where too thin (how to mix the latex with right amount of additives) to be able to pour in time before setting and achieve a consistent build up in the mold casing. And to look at a more substantial mix for durability. Thank You Mathew....

And moving on with another repair project, many of the Hoover Sloping front 1961 keymatics are suffering from timer advancement issues, these timers are so complicated with a wiring loom of over 130 sectional wires covering the timer, and top and bottom loom banks. Amazing for the day and what now is done on a microchip the size of your thumbnail.
So we need to replace a blown resistor which works in conjunction with the "Timed" prortions of the automated programming.

For its time this was quite unique and to have plugs or banks of wires in large plug on blocks was ahead of the game, when you think after this Hoover went back to individual wiring terminals and not until late 80`s some 20 years later did plugs appear on later timers..

And finally, a new challenge...
We all know the Hoover Logo, distinguishable around the world. Alas we saw the demise of the great company and while the original Hoover factory of washing machines in Merthyr Tidfyl is open as the European office the town is a shadow of its former self... A community project has been set up by young people engaging the local community and how to re-build it. So " Made in Merthyr" community project is born. There is a range of merchandise available and we are all encouraged to participate in "advertising" the fact - its become a cult and t-shirts are showing up all over the world, Heres me trying to rock the alternative "Original Made in Merthyr" on the wall of Keymatics !! Here`s the project link, Look out for more pictures from fellow members !! CLICK HERE TO GO TO chestermikeuk's LINK

I am in total awe of Dr Mathew and his ingenuity- the door seal moulding and the AEG Lavalux removal tool is just great and those are on top of all his other skills in repairing and making things work properly.

Out in the garden, indeed! A true garden of delights with all those marvelous twinnies. I'd be in heaven there with machines I've never had the pleasure of knowing. Would forget to eat or go to bed.
Was remiss when losangles recently joined, asking about wash-ins, telling him we have one or two a year. You laddies seem to have them almost monthly. And you all look so hale and hearty, healthy and happy when you do. Getting over there is high on my bucket list. Cheers until then or until you get stateside again! |

I can hardly believe it is over two weeks ago - so good to have the familiar faces back again. As Mike said, having just had a new central heating boiler installed and the house completely re-wired I was obliged to keep numbers down - but we still had 15! And apart from all the machines there was such a lot of joy and laughter, which is what makes it all worth while.
And indeed, until the next time ........ Louis asked about the pulsator in the small Ariston machine (from 1981) shown in reply 15, so here we are. The wash part of this machine is a direct successor of the Rolls twin tub behind it, which is almost 20 years older. Pulsators or impellers on the base of the tub generally tend to push the clothes out of the wash water but this is counteracted by a constant re-circulation of the water, the jet of which pushes the clothing back down. These machines had quite small capacity, about 4 lb as compared to the 6lb of a Hoovermatic or Servis (Speedqueen twin tub). The picture with the grill off shows the (2KW) heating element Al |

It kind of matched the brown accents on the lids and indeed the other Ariston models at the time, as I remember it the earlier Colston models the tub were a sort of mid blue and on the Rolls it was light blue. Was it an Ariston model you had or some other make? Al This post was last edited 11/14/2017 at 08:59 |

I wonder if it was a Burco or some derivation of same, this was a table top model with (smaller) pulsator in a similar position on the bottom of the tub but without water recirculation. I always quite fancied getting one of those just to see what it was like ..... |
