Well I bought this dishwasher the LG LDF5545ST and I will have to say that I am impressed. This thing washes quite well and drying is superb. It’s also bigger than the Miele that it replaces. I just got it today and find the racking is good and spacious. This dishwasher is no slouch in the wash power department. I used the Heavy cycle and I was amazed at the water movement especially with the bottom arm. It does cycle the arms like the Miele did. The dishwasher build looks like a Bosch and installs like one. Here are a few pics I took after l unloaded it.

Looks like a very nice dishwasher built to last.

Its not silent though like the Miele was, but its not at all disturbing. The Heavy cycle is the strongest spray wise. I thought the Miele had power on the Pots and Pans cycle, this seems to have more and the water jets get right up into the roof of the tank from the bottom arm. The bottom arm sprays one way clockwise with the non moving arms. The dishwasher stops and then switches to the moving arms where the jets go back and forth scouring the load. The load I did the maiden wash with had some soils that were not that bad. I did scrape and load. The rack spacing is wider than the Miele and the racks are much bigger so I can load more into it. I am going to try the Turbo Cycle and see how that performs. The Heavy cycle came in at 3 hours, but the results were outstanding. I have never had a dishwasher dry plastics and I always had my handy dandy dish towel at the ready when I unloaded the Miele. Not with this dishwasher, plastics were dried to perfection.

Congratulations on your new dishwasher, Mike. A 2008 TOL LG was, overall, the best dishwasher I've ever had. It excelled in cleaning, capacity, interior space, and had high quality racks and stainless steel.

Eugene I know you had issues with yours leaking at the drain hose. The drain hose they used with this dishwasher is beefy in construction. It’s a lot like the hose on my washer. The thing is this dishwasher isn’t built like the one you had. The racks are better made than the Miele and that’s saying something. The spacing is wider in the lower rack for plates yet what looks like an area with no tines is actually perfect for sauce pans and the like. One thing is I wish they would have designed a silverware basket that splits apart so if I don’t need the entire thing I can take out what I don’t need for the load and use the space for something else. It’s gojng to take some to get used to the loading, but like every dishwasher I had in the past it’s just a learning curve.

Mike-- My LG had a 3rd (top) rack that held flatware/cutlery/utensils. Don't recall ever using the actual flatware basket in the lower rack. Appreciated having every square inch of the entire bottom rack for huge / oddly-shaped cookware. Mine endured nearly commercial-level use. I was still cooking an ungodly amount of food each week and having a lot of company for meals.

It survived five years of extremely heavy use before (as you recalled) a leaky drain hose wrecked a section of the kitchen underflooring. There was, unfortunately, no vinyl floor covering under the dishwasher; it was bare wood. The slow leak kept soaking into the floor rather than running forward and alerting me to an issue. Figured out something was wrong when the floor went all spongy in front of the sink right around Thanksgiving of 2013. Most sane people would have simply replaced the drain hose, but I had the itch to try something new (TOL GE in this case) and, frankly, no longer trusted the machine.

Still hands-down my favorite dishwasher. Great features, illuminated interior, 3rd rack (which was still a fairly rare feature back then) and a cavernous interior. The GE was quieter and cleaned very well, but interior space was notably tighter and racking/tine-spacing was not great.

I was thinking of getting the model up with the top controls and the 3rd rack and it also was Alexa enabled and it was $150 more. I bought this at Sears and got it at $499....$200 off of regular price. This model suits my needs and I like the front panel....the leds are blue/white in color. I used one cycle so far and that was Heavy and it clocked in at 3 hours. The Turbo cycle runs for an hour at high pressure and uses more water. I have not tried that cycle yet. Delicate runs for 1:53, Normal at 2:28, Turbo for :59. I have not downloaded any cycle yet into it as well. But the thing I like is when it’s powered up it sounds like my washer and dryer does with the chime.

I'm sure you know this, but the default download cycle is Pots & Pans (read that in the manual).  Wonder how that would differ from Heavy.

well I did know about the already downloaded cycle of Pots and Pans. I can also download 2 others...Cassarole and Glassware. The Pots and Pans cycle does not let one add options like the other cycles do. I did use Auto Cycle and it clocked in at just under 2 hours for the load I used it on. The results so far have been outstanding and this thing dries like nothing I have ever used. Plastics emerge dry and yes I do use a rinse aid to help it. It uses a Hybrid fan drying system where it pulls in dry air from just under the door and exchanges the heat and moisture in the tank, condenses the steam out and vents the air just at the bottom front of the door. The dishes are still warm but not wicked hot when the cycle is done.
Washing is interesting to hear and on Heavy, which has the most pressure, is very powerful...the dishwasher sounds alot like a Whirlpool PowerClean, at least to my ears. The bottom arm has the two end arms that sweep back and forth and it scours everything in the tank. When the dishwasher switches arms, the motor stops and restarts. The top impeller spins rapidly and with a good amount of force, the middle arm does a great job as well.
I am still getting used to the racking but it does hold much more than the Miele did. I dont miss the silverware tray up on top though. This dishwasher is not silent compared to the Miele.

It sounds like this dishwasher is probably better than my Kenmore/Whirlpool made one. I know my Kenmore/LG made front load washer and dryer is certainly excellent.

I've always liked front control panel dishwashers opposed to hidden control models. This model look very sleek and I love the cut out where the handle is hidden. Very nice. I think new dishwashers today are so much more advanced than years ago. My new Maytag that I bought this year is an ace at cleaning anything I throw at it! I hate washing dishes and the dishwasher is one appliance I cannot live without!

Glad you're getting great results with your new LG, Mike. I checked out reliability at CR and LG has made substantial headway since I purchased mine in 2008. Capacity is a definite plus for the brand. The machine itself barely fit in the space allotted in my cupboards. In fact, it had to stick out a bit in front of the countertop. The GE that replaced it was smaller by at least a couple of inches in depth and width. The interior tub space was smaller as well. Groupings of cookware that fit in the 2003 Maytag and its LG successor did not fit in the 2013 GE.

Eugene I am finding that this dishwasher holds much more than the Miele could have ever held. The Miele was not as deep or as wide as the LG. The Miele racks look like postage stamps compared to the LG. I can actually fit in one load what I used to do in 2 with the Miele. I can see why you loved your LG dishwasher. Even though this dishwasher had a 48 db rating I dont think its offensive sound wise to my ears. The Miele was nearly silent in that area. Time will tell how this machine fares out.

That model got rave reviews from reviewed.com a few months back. Seems to be an entire new platform as it dosen't have steam and isn't the new TOL.

It really looks like it's been targeted as direct competition to Bosches and WPs midrange and seems to be just as good in cleaning.

Generally, I tend to stay away from everything LG in its first generation. Seems to sketchy.
See their FLs: Balancing issues were common earlier on, now they seem to be less.

Racking is a thing... I am learning that how effective racking is is in direct correlations to once items.
Back home, a Miele would have been perfect, and a Bosch was fine. Could never have benefitted from wider tine spacing.
Here, in the flatshare, we wash tons of plastic storage containers and far more pots and pans, thus fewer plates. Here, wider tine spacing would be a dream.

New LG DW

Wow Mike, you certainly can't complain about the great price you got at Sears for your new DW. The exterior styling looks very appealing to me-sleek. Quite a sophisticated wash system, and drying. Cheers.

Grayson, the cat, loves to watch me load the dishwasher and unload it. He likes to sit on the door after I open it and soak up the heat in the door. This little guy is from Georgia and he just turned 6 months old. He is a character...we love him. My other two cats have accepted him.

Hi Mike. How is the New Machine ?

Are you happy with it ? A friend of mine is in the market for a new Dishwasher.

She is upgrading her home to put it on the market. I told her if she was selling NOT to bother with Miele.

I love it so far. This thing cleans better than the Miele could and that’s saying something. It’s not as quiet as the Miele was , but that’s not an issue. I find I use the Auto and Heavy cycles most followed by Normal. I do clean the filter once a week and just entails pulling it out and running it thru the faucet.
It also holds much more than the Miele ever could. The back two rows of tines in the lower rack fold flat so I can put pots and pans facing down. The upper rack has two areas where the tines fold flat. The next model up from mine has more loading options and is Alexa enabled. Scott wanted me to buy that one, but I would never use that feature. We have enough things in this house that is Alexa enabled, I mean how lazy can one be?!
The racks are very sturdy, the tine tips are balled and they glide out effortlessly. I love the upper rack height and I can put tall items up on that rack with no issues. The top water source is an impeller much like a Bosch and before the dishwasher drains, it will surge the water thru it flushing the top of the load. Bottom arm is no slouch in power.

I was impressed with the quality of the racks, cleaning ability and capacity of my 2008 LG. Glad they're still making them that way. Only wish they made a full-size portable; I'd get one in a heartbeat.

Do you recall what model number your Miele was? I am just looking for reference as far as size. I am interested in buying a Miele as my next dishwasher. But reviews like this are potentially changing that!

It was a Miele LaPerla dishwasher we bought in 2008. I can dig up the info on it shortly. It was top of the line at the time and it had a top of the line price to go with it too. I loved that dishwasher but after close to 10 years and looking at hefty price tag to get it fixed, I passed. It didn't make sense to put that kinda money into it, especially for a 9 year old machine. I know Miele used to claim a 20 year life, but seriously, thats only if you dont use it everyday. I dont miss it.

My friends where I live had a Miele that was 13 years old.

One day it quit. As they go North and South, I asked if they would like me to have the machine fixed while they were away.

Yup do it. The Tech came and said he needed the machine removed. This machine had hidden controls and a custom front wood panel. The Tech informed me that the panel must be removed by another source as if they damaged it they did NOT want to be held responsible.

So,(Just feel like rambling) I removed the panel and it went to the shop. The Diagnoses was that it needed a circulator pump and a drain pump to the sum of $980.00. The owners said do it

Year and a half later the "Mother Board" or whatever went and that part was over $700 with NO WARRANTY. They dumped it and bought yet another Miele which is more nosy than the first.

Sorry but I am the type of person (at 62 years) that really doesn't give a crap about the Doo Dads and the Bells and Whistles.

All I I care about is clean dishes and pots in less than a Hour and 30 minutes.

Then, when my "Cache" of Dishwashers are done, I should be long gone and will miss them dearly. Unless I end up in the Hobart Galaxy. LOL

TopLoader,  your comment: "Sorry but I am the type of person (at 62 years) that really doesn't give a crap about the Doo Dads and the Bells and Whistles." is pretty much how I feel. I put a MOL Frig DW in the mini Manse when I moved in and have not missed all the B&W's that were on the old TOL in the Manse.

I thought that same thing when I bought this dishwasher. I didn't use most of the cycles on the Miele, just Normal, Pots and Pans and on occasion the Tall Item cycle...that was about it too. Plus I wasn't going to pay an ungawdly amount of money like last time. We are planning on putting the house on the market this spring and moving...will we do it remains to be seen.
I am quite happy with this LG dishwasher.
