I was watching the episode where Aunt Bee won all the appliances on a quiz show and noticed the washer & dryer were brown RCA Whirlpools circa 1965 but I was trying to figure out what make the coin-op washers were on the episode that Andy opened a coin laundry. They were pink, had a round window in the lid and looked like Frigidaire jet cone machines. Does anyone know for sure what they were?

Well, I remember a wringer on the back porch & there was an episode where Andy opened a coin laundry to help pay for Opie's on-coming college expenses...

A side note: Opie was baking cookies with Thelma Lou (an episode where she seemingly was spending more time with Opie than Barney) so there was a General Electric refrigerator & push-button stove--and I only remember seeing those appliances & that one shot just ONE TIME!

TAGS was very big on General Electric Appliances, (Andy's refrigerator was a GE, as was the 40" electric stove, after it staring off as a 40" (don't know brand) Gas) but, yes, Aunt Bee won Whirlpool stuff in that later, color-episode...

Like so many members, I'm always on the lookout for vintage appliances in classic television shows. In "Dennis the Menace" Alice Mitchell sure had a very nice Whirlpool in her laundry room, although shots of it are few and far between. I do recall an episode where the machine was over-suds which I'm sure had something to do with the lead character.

I know that with just this one photo there are people on here who can not only tell you everything about the washer, but also the mixer, the gas range and the dinnerware too. Now back to our regular program, The Andy Griffith Show...

Andy's coin-op washers were Frigidaire toploaders of the time period, as I recall from a discussion some years ago.

Didn't Alice Mitchell also have a Duomatic at one point in the series?

I remember an episode of Nanny and the Professor....

apparently one of the kids caught a huge fish, maybe a bass, and was debating on letting it go back into the river/lake, or keep it.....

the only thing big enough at home to keep him in was their Maytag washer....I think they removed the agitator so he had more room to swim in a circle....

I just remember them opening the lid to show us the fish....

When the tv series "Family" came out in the mid-70's they had what appeared to be a Whirlpool gas dryer with a window and the washer was a Kenmore then a '66 Frigidaire CI. Some shows they switched the machines from side to side.
The cars were supplied by Ford, and it wasn't long before an old "Miss America" looking Philco took the place of the Frigidaire.
I recall thinking it was pretty goofy to switch-out the washers, and yet, never show a new one.

Pat, you have a keen eye. Hey, at least I remembered it was a Whirlpool after all these years!

"Family" TV series;

at least the first episodes had a Kenmore combo washer/dryer and a Frigidaire washer to it's left. A Kenmore dryer never had a round chrome framed window, not by the 60's.

Thanks for the link, Pat, that was a really good shot of the Frigidaire washer.  There was one episode where a handyman was working around the house and the Buddy took him under her wing, etc., but there was a mention of fixing the washer as one of his tasks.  Show that on screen!  lol

The Firgidaire washers in the Andy Griffith Show's Laundercoin has me wondering if they were really agitating or a non-up & down-pulsator (conventional) agitator was used--didn't "the 1st customer" put her coin in and start her machine?

Also Dennis The Menace: The Wilsons next door had a top freezer Frigidaire fridge just the Mitchells did, too--and also a Ford Galaxie 500--I'm at least talking the "George" one (played by Joseph Kearns) that this sort of thing hit me this profound--back when I'd watched the program on Nickelodeon...

Mama's Family (1983)

The dryers on both the 1983-1985 seasons and the set retool after that were easy: both Kenmores (loved loved loved the 1961 KM in the earlier episodes). But, I had a harder time with the washing machines. The first years episodes appeared to feature a '62 or '63 Frigidaire possibly? From '85 to series end was even tougher to make out. That washer looked to be a GE, but someone in an earlier Thread about TV appliances identified it to be a Kenmore, which it could possibly be. There was constantly a laundry basket sitting on top and covering up the control panel.

I don't know how to do a screen capture, so I just posted the entire video of an episode from the first season.

Hazel

Best I remember, Hazel had a Philco washer. I also remember Bub (William Frawley) doing laundry in a 1960 or 61 Frigidaire on an early episode of "My Three Sons".

In Bewitched episode with George and Martha Washington, Samantha said she had a "washer/dryer" but really appeared to just be a Maytag HOH dryer.

lesto-

I even own a bunch of episodes of Hazel on DVD but I don't ever remember even seeing where she washed! Where did she? I recall that the main camera in the kitchen set was where presumably a wall would be, and as we saw it, the range was on the left side near where her bedroom was, and the sink on the right, and the kitchen nook and bay window were at the back. But I don't remember a w/d pair.

I was always a fan of Shirley Booth. I can remember reading that even when she did Hazel, she used to take the bus and/or walk to the studio because she was that thrifty. If you ever get the chance and haven't seen it, check out "About Mrs. Leslie" with Robert Ryan, made from the book in the early 50's. She plays a middle-aged former bar entertainer looking back on her life. Just superb.

"Family"

was the first evening soap. Lady Kenmore dryers never had all those cycle buttons.

Peyton Place

'Family' wasn't the first popular evening soap; Peyton Place was, from '64 through '69. It even came one at one time, two nights weekly. Not that I watched it, I was a kid and thought it was stupid. I was in college when 'Family' came out and I thought it was great.

"My Three Sons (1960)" featured a Norge pair, circa 1959. In both the Bryant Park house and the Los Angeles house, we rarely get to see the dryer - it's installed across the room from the washer, behind the kitchen wall.

I have yet to find the episode where Steve Douglas fights with the machine, which appears to have a severely unbalanced load in the tub, and which tries to eat his necktie among other things. I saw this in a clip that was part of a TV special celebrating 30 years of television, or some such...

If Mr. Douglas had so much money, why did he live in such squalor except as a story line gimmick?

At one point when Hazel got a new gas kitchen, she had a 36" Duomatic.

I love "About Mrs. Leslie".

My three sons had a 40" TOL Frigidaire range from 1961. They had a small one door Frigidaire refrigerator and the Frigidaire Super washer which could be seen sometimes and I guess the matching dryer that was hidden. Once, there was some commotion with the washer and a wheel came rollling out of the laundry room and across the kitchen floor. This is from the time period when William Frawley played uncle Bub. Then he died and probably no one was sad because he was considered to be a mean person by all who worked with him, especially Vivian Vance. The cars were Pontiacs and the family car a station wagon.

Yeah, Robbie had a 64 LeMans ragtop, burgundy color. And there was an episode, where Steve buys Chip a car, bought from a co worker. It was a late 20's-early 30's Pontiac.
