We had a little gathering to celebrate the 60th birthday of our friend and collector Alistair, (Vacbear58) as Al`s place is currently a mudbath while building work is completed, Richard in Consett, Durham kindly offered to host. Al made a request to visit Beamish, a sprawling open air museum dedicated to telling the stories and preserving the villages, shops and coal mines of the area and beyond.
Of course a visit to Richards is like stepping back in time so what better than head for the kitchen and a "Vintage Wash", The Hotpoint 1501 Top Loader from the 1960`s. From the left, Steve (SESteve) , Darren (Slowspin66) Richard (Ricky5050) and Alistair Birthday Boy (vacbear58)

It truely was a wonderful weekend, Thanks to Richard for hosting us all in his beautiful home (the photos do not begin to do it justice) and to Mike for all his hard work preparing a magnificent spread on Sunday.
But special thanks to all who were able to make it, I could not have asked for a more enjoyable way to spend "a big birthday" - open hearts, open minds, sharing experiences and always willing to learn from others. Much joy, laughter and love all round - and although there were a few who were not able to make it, its seemed like they were in spirit too. Al |

Hi Mike,
Woke up to this major work this morning while it was in progress. What a splendid, satisfying morning read! Just last night I watched a BBC show on PBS about English countryside villages featuring cool old quaint cottages and small factories where they raised sheep and spun wool. So much like the village in your photo essay. Is that synchronicity or serendipity? Everything in your pix is so perfectly preserved, even the Crapper! Loved it all. You know Mike someone did you grand justice by taking your photo in the haberdashery--paying it forward for your signature generosity to us all. It is a great picture of you, and a magnificent photo! Tell the lads I'm in my 60's, too. Not a bad age to be, despite what you may hear to the contrary ;'D |

First and foremost Happy, Happy Birthday Vacbear58! And many returns on the day.
Next must say that whenever these wonderful threads appear am put in mind of "Last of the Summer Wine". All lads together having fun and getting up to all sorts in the beautiful English countryside. Leave you all to work out who is "Compo, Norman,Herbert 'Truly', Howard, Nora, Ivy, Edie and of course Marina! *LOL* Just something wonderful about a group of old friends coming together in order to mark special occasions. And you lot always seem to have such a great time. This post was last edited 02/07/2018 at 07:51 |

Well what a great time we all had . Richard is such a good host and so generous . This thread really captures the essence of a great time !! Richard is such a great chap and so patient even when we trash his house flood the kitchen and snap the drive belts on his tumble dryer !!!! ( I still don’t think that English electric dryer looks right in your kitchen but I know a man who can re home it for you !!!!!) the trip to Beamish was great and such fun . The inclement weather never seems to dampen the fun and laughter !!!
Those hair dryers and the beauties that where sat under them where very “Are you being served” Mrs slocombe was in there I’m sure !!! A great time and thanks to everyone and Richard for hosting the weekend !! brilliant thread Mike as always Darren

Borax was the miracle substance of late 1800's through Edwardian period and beyond.
It was used to soften water for laundry or cleaning due to it being less aggressive/alkaline than (washing) soda. Thus you could use or were advised to use borax for say nursery laundry, laces, and other "nice things" because it won't or wouldn't injure. Due to its properties of releasing oxygen in water borax was also used as a mild bleach (laundry), and or thought to have disinfecting properties (house cleaning). It did help with odors and so forth in days before Lysol type cleaners, though one could use carbolic soap for that purpose. Borax was also used both in homemade and store bought cosmetics such as creams. cosmeticsandskin.com/aba/cold-cre... |

And a great photo essay Mike, I feel like have taken another fun trip to the UK, I still relish the fun time I had there last June, can't wait to visit again.
Mike the next time we do an event here we are going to fly you in to photograph and document the event, you really captured the birthday event and trip to Blemish well.
Hi Alister it looks like you had a great birthday, my partner Ken just turned 60 as well, I feel that this is a great age to be, I would love to see pictures of how your remolding is going.

Thanks to all for your good wishes - I actually got my first "Senior" concession at Beamish - £5 reduction for over 60, I am not sure I would rather have paid the extra £5 but hey ho, nothing I can do about getting older.
I certainly enjoyed the trip to Beamish and hope we can visit again later in the year when the the weather might be a bit warmer, the tickets are good for 12 months. Its about 2 1/2 hour drive from my home in the East Midlands. The extension to my home will hopefully be done by around Easter so it will be "open for business" some time after that - it has taken then far longer than they expected do to extensive drainage works (they were not unexpected, it was the nature of the soil, almost 100% clay, which cased the delay) and of course the weather has not helped either. The exhibition space should be doubled although I suspect it will still not be enough ..... But there will be a thread on that later, when it has all come together. I have been fortunate to have a builder who is pleasant, conscientious and easy on they eye, so no complaints. The client is not bad either although how easy on the eye is a matter of opinion LOLOLOLOL Al |
