So my parents' Kenmore washer broke down today. Lately it had gotten to where if the dial wasn't set in the Heavy Duty or Gentle sections, it wouldn't advance through the entire cycle.

Then today, when it was going into the spin cycle, after the water drained out the pump started making a loud noise and the tub wouldn't start spinning. Moving the dial either makes it start filling or the pump starts making the loud noise depending if it's set to fill or spin.

I'm not sure what the issue is, I figured the timer needed to be replaced since it wasn't advancing but don't know what the issue is now.

I'm sure my parents will want to replace it and get a new set, as that tends to be their way of dealing with it. I don't know that a new set will be better, I figure in fact a new washer might be worse quality.

The washer is a 1999 and the dryer is a 2004, both Whirlpool manufactured top and front load models. They have the rounded control consoles with white and gray rubber knobs.

Good chance it's a simple broken motor coupler (akin to a belt).  One doesn't toss-out a washer just for a broken belt, right?

Model number

If you could supply a model and serial number we could help you a lot more.

It could be a lot.

Loud sounds can come from the pump, the motor and the transmission. Not advancing usually is the timer.

There are many threads around here on which washers are decent replacements, but first I'd wait for other, more knowing members to judge what your fault might be.

They ended up getting a new one as they couldn't do without one for long...
