Yes siree, in one fell swoop, both machines I coveted showed up. Thanks to Martin (Yogitunes), I will be picking them up next week. The dryer (HOH?) works, but the seller has no idea if the washer does.  Only 2 pictures in the ad (shown), they look fairly good. Stay tuned!

You bet Paul! I'll be dropping the washer off at Martin's so he could work his magic on it. I'll pick it up at a later date. The dryer is going back to Brooklyn.

Why yes, yes it is. Take the back off, and there will be an aluminum elbow, that you can loosen the clamp, and turn.

here is a HOH with the body removed...appears it can be vented out either side with the addition of a few pipes....

seems it can go out either side, or out the upper back....just not straight down through the base....

I imagine the belts will need replacing on the washer. What are your thoughts on souping up the performance with different spec belts? Would the higher speed be detrimental to the washer and/or clothes?

Restoring a MT A806 & DE806

combo52's profile picture

I would diffidently get a 50 cycle motor pulley and set of 50 cycle belts, adding a motor start capacitor is also a great idea for any MT DC washer, the capacitor makes the motor start in a split second without any hesitation.

The large tub MT DC washers just couldn't handle and pull down a good sized load especially during the short rinse agitation period without the 15% speed boost the 50 cycle components give, the regular 16 gallon machines were not quite as bad but still were helped by the 15% speed increase.

If I were going to make this my primary daily driver I would also install the orbital transmission with the load sensor agitator. This upgrade really reduces the clothing wear while allowing larger items to turn over and get evenly washed, it was certainly the best agitator MT ever put in the DC washer. We have this combination [ 50C LS agitator ] hooked up in the A806 in our museum that anyone is welcome to come and try out and so far everyone that has tried it out has really been impressed. Its like the 4 cylinder Chrysler mini van with and without the turbo option, LOL.

The other thing I would do is use a WP inlet valve so you get a faster fill and better spray rinse, you should replace an inlet valve in any case if it is over about 10 years old to reduce the risk of floods.

When rebuilding the dryer I would modify the dryers heating element for 208 volts [ only if you have 208 volt power in your building ] so you get proper drying speeds, otherwise the HOH dryers are pretty slow as they only have a 4800 watt element [ WP- KM always used 5,600 watts during this time period ] which drops to around 3,600 if you have 208 volt power, at this wattage you are getting down to the drying heat of a European dryer without the fast spinning washer to go with it.

I might also consider adding sound insulation to the washer and dryer to make these smooth running machines even quieter and satisfying to use.

John L.

Wow John, thanks for all that info. I must admit I am very intrigued with all these modifications. As you may recall, I already have a load sensor agitator. This 806 will be a daily driver, and I want it to be the best it can be in terms of reliability and washing ability.

50hz pulley

swestoyz's profile picture

First off, congrats on finding your dream set! Unless John has a secret stash of 50hz pulleys on hand, finding one from a distributor can be tricky. Here's a note I sent to another member last year regarding the pulleys -

Unfortunately it looks like the 50hz pulley is no longer available from most sources. The last PN I see available was the Y202496, but 202496, 1245651, 2-2496, were also listed at one time. The 50hz pulleys are a heavy machined pulley, rather than a stamped pulley that I've seen on may 60hz versions. You may want to keep a search active on ebay, just in case. The belts appear to still be available from a few sources.

To be honest, I'd clean the washer up, install a new injector, rebuild the motor glide with a new kit, clean the pulleys, install a new drive belt (pump belt should be fine), replace the water valve if you are concerned with using the original, and run with it.  Several members have had no issues with the wash action of the A806, as they came from the factory.  Personally I feel the A806 was the best of the best and I wouldn't change a thing with the drive system and leave it the way Newton intended it to be.

Up Grading A Maytag Washer

combo52's profile picture
Hi Ben, these were good washers in their day, but MT in Newton Iowa are the ones that upgraded this washer design to the orbital trans and Load sensor agitator, and If I can drive a 1973 Impala that runs and drives like a 2005 model I will do it any day.

Hope to see you soon, John

A reasonable alternative to the hard-to-find 50Hz pulley is a trans oil change with Redline MT-90 oil. The wash action is downright violent, and no 'lazy' agitation when the temps are cold. Seeing is believing.

Thanks Ben!

I've decided to do the following:

A) Switch to a 50 cycle motor pulley and set of 50 cycle belts if available. If not, I'll

put on new belts.

B) Install the Load Sensor agitator.

C) Switch to the WP inlet valve.

D) Rebuild the motor glide.

The transmission if working properly, I will leave be for now. And this is assuming the washer is working correctly at it's maiden wash.

As for the dryer, I have not made the 220 volt installation yet, so I have no idea if ultimately it will be true 220 service or 208V.

Boosting The Performance Of A MT DC Washer

combo52's profile picture

Changing the trans oil to a new more modern oil is differently a good idea if you are keeping the old style Pittman trans, but doing so does nothing about the poor turnover these bigger tub washers are know for and the barely over 600 RPM spin speed.

The 50 cycle motor pulleys are getting scarce but can easily be made by a local machinist, getting the correct belts is actually the harder part of the upgrade.

Thanks for the tip on the oil, Cory, I'm doing my 806 this summer and will try it.

The Load Sensor agitator may not be a worthwhile effort if you aren't increasing the agitation speed, the smaller fins on the Load Sensor won't move much at the 63 OPM of the Pittman transmission.

I looked for the 50HZ pulley & belt set a few years ago and came up dry at every turn. I ordered a set probably 10-12 years ago when they were still available from Maytag but it's not surprising they're all gone now. You really will love the 806, it is the pinnacle of Maytag, mine get used (factory specs) every week.

50hz setup....doubtful, but Partstore.com has it listed as out of stock until 3/24/18

pulley part number......Y202496 OR 2-2496, 202496

drive belt..............6 2119480....Maytag belt OR 2-11948, 211948

pump belt...............Q 62149 EB....from the Mansfield Prod Co OR 2-11451, 211451, 5303261155

the pump belt looks to be about 1/4" bigger than the original.....the original may work if you slid the pump all the way to the left.....when I get a chance, I will see if it works...no sense in buying another if it works....

the regular powerfin with this setup kicks ass.....

of course there is a powerfin from an orbital transmission that will work...

the ultimate would be the Load Sensor, to handle any size load

John, right, no real advantage to spin speed, I use a separate spinner for that.

BUT, when laundry day comes around and I fire up my 3 806's to tackle the work, the improvement in turnover on my turquoise tag is like NIGHT AND DAY compared to the others. No more slow roll or swish-swash.

I've shot videos previously on this, need to get them uploaded for others. The only downside is that it's been strongly 'hinted' that I convert the other two!

Speeding Up A Maytag Washer 15%

combo52's profile picture

With a 50 cycle pulley has never caused a failure of any part that I have heard of.

That said I DO NOT recommend using the 50 cycle pulley with the older Pittman transmission and the orignal power-fin agitator. The PFA was proven to be the only agitator that actually will damage clothing in one washing in CRs tests, this agitator has fins that extend too far in the narrow MT wash basket, there fore speeding it up is not likley good for your clothing even though it will not hurt any washer components.

We have been using a Load-Sensor agitator with the short stroke orbital transmission in our A806 at the museum for years and this is a very good combination.

Power Fin Agitator

Is this a PFA? I used to run this machine on low speed, but now I have a stuck contact set and can only run on high. I do believe that it is rough on the clothes, and already appears to have claimed one of my wife's bras. One more project to add to the mountain lol.

I have a 1972 Maytag A606, it's just like the A806 but with a few less bells and whistles. I find it's performance to be all-around excellent. It washes well, it turns the clothes over well, it extracts well, my clothes hold up well, and, of course, it's the most durable automatic washing machine ever made by anyone.

As for washing bras, they need to be put in a lingerie wash bag before being placed into any top-loading washer.

We ran it without water, the panel light works, the spin works and tub brakes smoothly. John (Combo52) after examining the washer and dryer said they would need very little to bring them back into service.

short stroke orbital transmission in our A806

Yeah, but unfortunately retrofitting the A806 you lose that soothing "woo-woo" agitation sound the long stroke helical trans is know for.

Sort of like putting a modern Hemi engine in a vintage Hemi Cuda.

Technically, it's still Hemi (Maytag) powered and runs great but a big part of the nostalgic value is lost.
