So I started this project today now that I have my other A606 in place of my A608 so I can take my time rebuilding this one. Got all the parts I need to go through it thoroughly including flushing the transmission. My first problem is....... Getting this stubborn agitator off, so far no luck. Hot water and letting it soak wit the 2x4 method only results in me lifting the machine off the ground and that's wit half a tub of hot water..... ARRRGH

Oh yeah, came off in one piece, it was just really stuck, a bunch of corrosion on the shaft. It looks like it will clean up nicely though. I'll get some more pics later...... Watching the Bruins now.

I had that 2x4 laying flat at first and I started cranking the jack up and I thought I was going to break the board. Flipped it on end and I thought for sure with all the pressure I was putting on that agitator it was going to pull it apart but I guess at least one thing went my way so far, usually I have Murphy living at my house.........

Not so pretty now..... Had to cut the drum nut off, not a big deal as I have everything I need for tools to do a job like this. Tank has a bit of corrosion especially where the top seal is but I'll get it cleaned up at least enough for another 20 years.

Not so pretty now.....

Whoa.. that has to be one of the most corroded agitator shafts I've seen.

No wonder a homemade crane was needed to remove the agitator

Got the tub nut and associated hardware off, the set screw wasn't seized how about that. I did have cut and break the tub nut off though, wasn't so bad although everything seems to have a lot of corrosion...... No wonder the machine was growling at me.......

A good look at the shaft..... Ugly. The bearing is also seized to the housing. I gotta get this apart and cleaned up... We'll see if it's salvageable.

Got the bearing off, same way as everything else... Had to cut it off. Looks like I'll be looking for for a transmission or at least a top half with the way this shaft looks, cleaned it a bit and it only looks worse.

So... Anyone know where I can find a good used transmission? I told you all, Murphy lives at my house, you all have nothing to worry about.

.
what a mess!
But do you know if there is corresponding damage under all that goo, or could you clean it up up, fill with new oil, and be good to go?...as unlikely as that may seem now.

Post# 989018 , Reply# 17   3/31/2018 at 20:53 (2,188 days old) by Tazz (western massachusetts)

Well the problem is that drive shaft is totally shot plus when I pulled the cover off I heard pieces falling into that goo. I'll finish taking it apart tomorrow but I don't really think it is worth going any further especially with the amount of water that's been in there, I'm afraid of what the other shaft is going to look like.

Following this thread....

As my A407 I think has a bad tub bearing because its making a slight knocking sound during the spin cycle and I was going to remove the top half of the trans and change the muck also while that far apart. I just dont want to have it fall apart when the top cover is removed.

Post# 989079 , Reply# 19   4/1/2018 at 11:18 (2,188 days old) by good-shepherd (New Jersey)
remove the top half of the trans

Servicing the trans in place is not the way to do it, as can be seen from mess Tazz has already.

Once the outer tub is off the trans can be removed easily by titling the machine back and removing the lug screw and pulley.

I'm not real worried about the mess as I'm doing a complete rebuild but you are correct. I really wasn't expecting that much fluid in there either, talk about being over filled.

You can remove the trans and leave the brake package in place? Thats good to know.

talk about being over filled.

Water in the trans oil would account for the overfilled condition.

Still trying to find a transmission. After I cleaned up everything both sets of bearings for both shafts are pretty well used up. I'll post up some pics soon....
