My friend bought me this Whirlpool Dryer for $5.00 at Goodwill. He had text me a picture of it and I jumped on it. I'll get it home today and check it out.

A very good dryer and two speeds at that, should be around a 66 or 67 model and the first of the bigger drum more efficient WP dryers that are so good.

It might or might not have a console light, should diffidently have a drum light.

Great score!
And at an amazing price!

It looks like it should clean up nicely. I like the curve of the bottom of the control panel where it looks like the light lens is.

CONGRATULATIONS!!
:o)

Sweet machine! I just can't get over how stylish most 1960s appliances are. Congrats on getting a really nice one essentially for free. Are all the parts available to rebuild a dryer of this type/vintage? I'm thinking is setting my sights on a set of similar vintage, but that's the one thing that would hold me back.

Lights

We had the washer of that vintage, bought in 1969, probably a 1968 model. It was not coppertone but a dark edged beige. I’ve never seen another like it. Small tub. It was Mom’s pride and joy. The dial lit up when the machine was on. Surprisingly, the full width plastic lens under the console did not. It was a Supreme 80. That plastic lens lit up with fluorescent light only on the TOL model, Mark XII.

That model looks like a Supreme 80, so I doubt it lights up.

But any halfway handy person could no doubt easily rig a fluorescent ballast or LED lighting for it.

(Mom ran that washer constantly. After a water pump replacement it was extremely noisy and rattle-trap sounding for years. Then it bit the dust around 1998. I think the spin tube and drive shaft rusted out completely. It sounded like the tranny was full of rocks and it agitated erratically with lots of whining and labor. They let it sit full of water until it all evaporated. After that I figured it was used and rusted beyond resto, and I didn’t have time to mess around finding a home for it and dealing with someone else’s pickup/shipping, so I trashed it about a year ago. It was a you’re-old moment. The kids from 1-800-Got-Junk had never seen anything like it and thought it was from the 19th century. They couldn’t believe how heavy it was.)

Yes, as HelicalDrive says, I would expect that the timer dial may be backlight by an incandescent bulb.  That was the case with my grandparents' late 1960s Supreme 80 washer and slightly newer Supreme 80 dryer.  Fluroscent under-console lighting was on the Mark XII and some Imperial models.  Many of the lower models had the lens at bottom of the console even if there was no light.

"dark edged beige"

Helicaldrive, the washer would have been Whirlpool's Edged Fawn color. It was available (along with Edged Sapphire) circa '67-'68.

Oh

Thanks! That sounds right. When I emptied out the folks’ house I found the receipt for it. If I remember correctly it was $280ish.

My aunt had a 1968 Imperial model in Coppertone with the same arched lens. Hers lit up, and looked great in a dark room.
