I am taking a look at this Maytag Washer and Dryer found on Craigslist for $99.00 tomorrow. Can anyone tell me how old this set is? The seller lists Model numbers LA308970331cc and LDE409387703cl, but no serial numbers.

I'd say 1976-1980.  Good basic machine.

970331CC and 387703CL probably are the serial numbers and translate to 1979 February and 1979 June.

Thanks for all the replies. I am excited about possibly acquiring my first vintage washer and dryer set. The seller states that the dryer does not get as hot as it used to.  Is this an easy repair or something I should be worried about and pass on?

May be something simple, like a thermostat.

Thanks! I think I can handle a thermostat repair. I am looking forward to having an appliance actually worth repairing!

once I get it home.

Better move quick, deals like that go fast.

I've responded to Craigslist ads less than 24 hours old and the items were already gone.
Or, you make an appointment and someone grabs them before you can get there,

P.S. call before leaving to confirm they're still available and that you're coming over. Craigslist sellers are flakey and rarely bother to let you know if the item sold.

Whenever I see something for sale that's really nice and truly a great bargain ( but I could possibly live without) I rationalize and think "What could I spend this same amount on that would be a waste of money?" $99 is one of my health-destroying trips to the grocery store with 2 or 3 bags filled with chips, ice cream and bakery stuff...all things that would make my doctor cringe. Go get them Maytags!

Go get them Maytags!

One of the great things about DC Maytag's is they were built so well with porcelain tops/lids, tubs and heavy multiple zinc coated cabinets.

Thus, if not too badly abused they really polish up nice with the right products and some elbow grease, despite being decades old.

I went and saw it and bought it! I have to wait until Tuesday to get it home. It is the large capacity with the blue tub. It is really in nice condition. I am so excited I found it. I can't wait to get it home and start working on the dryer. :)

CONGRATS Kelly!!!  You will enjoy them, they are great machines and should last a long time.

The first thing I'd do with the dryer is clean/vacuum it out and make sure there isn't excess lint built up in where the lint filter goes or inside the exhaust outlet.

To open the dryer, there are two screws under the ledge at the lower part of the front panel.  Remove those, then swing the lower part of the panel out at a 30-45 degree angle.  The move the top of the panel in and down to unhook the clips that hold it in place.  Be careful as there are wires that need to be disconnected from the door switch.

Good luck with it and we're looking forward to more photos!

Kevin

saw it and bought it!

Nice score!

Center dial matched sets in very good condition are few and far between these days, and at bargain price to boot.

How are you getting it home? Maytag DC washers are heavy..

I have an LA511 washer and DE410 dryer from slightly newer vintage, but same old Maytag build. Both in lovely almond. 1 repair, $28 motor pulley and new belts on the washer and zero on the dryer and after nearly 35 years they still run like new. Hopefully the ones you found live up to the same standards.

Washer is perfect! Testing Dryer

kelly0721's profile picture

So, I finally got the Maytag set home and set up the washer right away and it is perfect. I needed to get a new dryer cord and finally got out to get one today. I hooked up the dryer and put a wet towel in to see how long it would take to dry it. It took an hour to dry, so maybe a little longer than it should take.

I included some photos, but it is hard to get good photos in my basement laundry room.

Nice set! The thing is with Maytag Stream of Heat dryers is that if you dry just one item , the item will take forever to dry since there is nothing else in the drum to cause what your drying to fall into the airstream properly. The thing is the item will ride around the drum and not tumble. These dryers do dry clothes fast and the shorter the vent, the better. Plus make sure that the dryer is cleaned out of excess lint. These dryers are built like tanks.

nmassman44, Thank you for explaining about the one towel not drying all that fast because I only put in one towel. I was concerned because the prior owners had said that the dryer was taking a little longer to dry things than it had in the past. However, my son was doing his laundry last night and he did not have any problems with dry time with full loads of laundry.

Before I turned it on, I did open up the front panel and the vent on the back and blew out all the  lint and then vacuumed. My little dog, Grace Kelly, who was "helping" me clean, was covered in gray lint when I was done. She is all white and looks like a little gray dust mop now, so it was pretty dirty in there. :)

I think the set is beautiful and am very happy with it.
