I've been vigorously cleaning my new/old Turquoise gas Magic Chef range -- the metal top of the oven beneath the burners was pretty disgusting and rusty, so i've been scrubbing and cleaning in preparation for rust treatment. Well, as I was scraping I used too much force and broke through to the oven insulation... Photos attached >_<

Can I just solder a piece of metal over this, or would it have to be welded? Is this repair advisable or even necessary -- or do you think this means the oven is too far gone to be safe?

As long as

The oven liner itself is OK I would just cut out any damaged metal and rivet or use sheet metal screws to put on a patch, then paint the whole thing with hi heat bbq paint.

If you didn't like the look of screws, some JBWeld would probably hold a patch in place.
