My Dispensall

geextrarinse's profile picture
Here she is... She needs ALOT of TLC but at least I have one now! I need to take her apart and clean her and repair the rust spots but overall it should be ok. It DOES need a motor though but luckily i have one from the avocado FF I just junked. I will post more pics whe she's up and running but for now heres a few.

Oh and the story goes... I got a totally random email on thursday of last week from a local guy 20 mins away who recently suffered flood damage to his basement with all the heavy rains back in june. He's had this machine since the 70's- it was his mothers. He used it regularly for the past 30 years and never had any problems. When his basement filled with 12" of water, the motor was submerged. After the waters receded he thought nothing of it and decided to do a load of wash - the washer filled but the motor didn't so much as hum. He decided to see if there was anything online about it and when he googled "GE Americana Dispensall" MY NAME and a link to my profile on THIS SITE came up (thank you Robert for helping to make a dream come true!). He noticed I was local and emailed me to come see it. I got to check it out today and now it sits at my parents with my other new one.(they however are not so thrilled) HOW AMAZING IS THAT! I was 20 mins away annd this guy just thought to email me instead of junk it! I'm thrilled and can't wait to get back up there to work on it. It does need alot of work but i can't wait to dig in to it! I'm sure with all of your help it will be running in no time!

Believe it or not this machine and the 60's model are the only two I ever wanted and less than a year of looking has brought be both - thank the GODS!

And my parents have been so great to allow me to have them there, so now that my searching is over i can relax a while. (I told them no more)

But this is the icing onthe cake. Unfortunately he also just junked the matching dryer and thought about me possibly wanting the pair after the man already took it away but i'll find one yet. for now - I'm more than contented!

OMG Matthew, what a cool machine. Motors and the likes can be found, even if you have to take one and have it re-worked by an electric motor shop. Not a big deal.

Your NEW machine is so cool, and I am not a GE fan until I saw Austins in Texas.

Good Luck!

Steve

Very nice! All tricked out and with lighted console! It won't be long and you'll have her up and running. I am not familiar with this type of GE,so I gather "the Tank" is for holding bleach? Was this usually broken or absent?

The tank

roto204's profile picture
Oh, but the tank did so much more than bleach! It did your bleach, your fabric softener, your detergent, and everything! That's why it's so important and rare when you find one that someone hasn't ripped-out the tank and chucked it.

Excellent find - they are fun machines. I love the multi-directional Filter-Flo mechanism in these machines, hopefully you'll get it up and running perfectly very soon.

My pleasure Matthew, a few members have asked that I change the code so the Profiles are viewable by members only, but I declined and this is one reason why the profiles need to stay public.

This is the first Dispensall I've seen with the complete assembly intact.

I definately agree and don't think its all that bad if outsiders see our profiles - its a way for them to tell other people and also to find machines like I just had happen for me - If i wasn't listed this too would have gone to the crusher!

Dispensall complete!

geextrarinse's profile picture
This machine is completely original - he even had the blue mini basket in there and told me how he liked to use it for his underwear (!). He used the dispenser for every wash too and really enjoyed it. He said he had heard that people had trouble with them getting clogged with lint but he then showed me how you so simply remove the tank and rinse it out. Its really in great shape over all. I have to scrape some rust and repaint some spots of course but thats easy. For now I need to get working on the motor. I'm thinking I'll have to get a meter and test everything. Does anyone have any input or suggestions for what the problem might be. I'm just assuming its the motor that is dead since it was under water for some amount of time. The timer advances and the water solenoids open but when I turn the dial to spin there is nothing but a slight hum from the timer. The motor does nothing. Anyone have any ideas before i take it all apart?

Thanks in advance!
Matthew

totally cool! Finding a "donor" GE washer to sacrifice a motor shouldn't be a problem at all. It will be great to see this totally rare machine up and running. It doesn't look bad at all. Should be a lot of fun. That's a nice looking control panel there too!

to answer some questions...

geextrarinse's profile picture
What is the tank for?
the tank fits perfectly into the underside of the lid and has a small screw pin that you untwist to remove the tank for regular cleanning. The tank has compartments for fabric softener, bleach and powdered detergent.

The multi directional Filter Flo nozzle has an apparatus in it that is controlled by the timer. It adjusts the flow of the recirculating water to different angles of the nozzle throughout the cycle and directs it into the various compartments on the holding tank to disense the products at just the right time of the cycle.

I plan on taking pics of the whole thing and posting them. I unfortunately don't have a digital video camera but my pics will be thorough.

I can't wait!

Very Nice

These where heavily advertised in the late 70's if i remember correctly. I do not remember anyone that actually owned one, but I always liked them. wonder what they cost New back then? bet you had to have your Right Change $, before you marched into your local GE dealer. Thanks for the pics, now the four dispenser holes obviously bleach, f.s., and 2 detergents im guessing for a prewash then on to the regular wash? could you use powder in both detergent slots or a liquid in one, and powder in the other. It is a very nice machine.Hope the guys hook you up with your motor. love the lights.

ff nozzle

geextrarinse's profile picture
note the different levels on the ramp of the nozzle. these all correspond with different ports in the tank. the far right smaller opening is for dispensing the reg cycle detergent and bleach. the far left is for the fabric softener and the centre is for the prewash cycle and rinse after the FS was released.

(uugh i can't wait to scrub this thing!)

GeExtraRinse ,sorry

You answered some of my questions while i was asking. LOL, 2 powders then or a powder and a liquid? or was one of the detergent Biz, Where we on the enzyme soak kick, then or not. thanks. arthur.

One interesting thing I noticed was the little "divider" in the nozzle between the right and middle sections. Mine doesn't have that.

Hey - quick question from this GE novice. Why does this machine have a stair-stepped Filter pan - I've never seen one like this before. Is it specific to the Dispensall - or have I not been paying attention (good chance!). My late 60's (the step down to your Programed GE) machine has just the normal small filter pan.

Matt, this is a Super Cool machine - you're going to enjoy getting this one ready to go!

Ben

Detergent:

geextrarinse's profile picture
I suppose you could use liquid in the prewash/soak and yes enzyme soak was still popular then. But the way the tank is set up you really couldn't use anything but powder in the regular wash dispenser because it would ultimately just run into the ff pan and not stay in the dispenser - that portion of the tank was more or less a shelf to hold the powder until the water moved it into the machine - liquid would have dripped off the tray and right into the machine.

The cool thing i noticed with the tank is that i can remove it from the lid and lay it in position and then i'll have already defeated the lid switch so we can watch the tray do its work - i'll take pics of everything so we can see - i'm realizing that thought a few have had these machines i don't think anyone has seen the tank in action until now - how exciiting!

Hmmm Austin... This is the exact nozzle I remember from when
I was little - you see i was exactly at eye level with it back then! I will tell you thought that HUGE chunks of lint were wadded up behind that little diverter so thats why they probably eliminated it on the later model. This is also a later model as the earliest version had a solenoid activated bleach dispenser under the top - the tank back then was just a diverter ramp. my machine actually holds the bleach and puts it in via siphon method. the fab softner disp. has a siphon too.

Stepped filter pan...

geextrarinse's profile picture
was developed as a detergent dispensing feature. it was used in machines that had prewashes and such. I understand that on earlier machines (pre-dispensall) there was also a gadget that sat on top of the agitator/ff pan that dispensed detergent after the prewash spin. the fab softner was dispensed by a timed dispenser like the timed bleach dispenser. they used them for a couple of years then they went to the larger "super filter flo" pan w/o the stepped dish.

here is a pic of my other machine w/o the indented centre - though i like the dish with the indent much better.

very nice machines.

was the mechanism still "suspended" by cables in these machines or was a different suspension system in use by then. One last question did these have the speed selector that could be damaged if you changed speeds with it running, or at this TOL level did ge throw in the true 2 speed motors? fascinating, and they are. Hope you have lots of fun with these, alr2903, arthur.
