Hello - first post here, glad to have found this forum. I have a 2004 Whirlpool top loader that I do not want to part with, as I can't buy a new one. It had a nasty smelling buildup in it, so I took out the basket to clean the inner tub, and found that the basket is rusted. I ordered a new basket from Sears, and it arrived damaged, with gouges and scratches. They sent me a replacement, which had more of the same type of damage, and I feel there's lack of a good protective layer on the underside. After looking at how the bottom of the new tub is coated, compared to the rusty areas on the original tub, it seems like the same areas will rust on the new tub. I'd like to repair the gouges, and give the areas that I feel are vulnerable a coat of something that will last, and I want to do it before it ever sees water. Once the basket is installed, I won't know what's going on underneath so I want to make sure it's right. Anyone have any experience with these? Thanks in advance!!!

Porcelain quality and shipping/handling care is horrible nowadays.

It'll be tricky to get any coating to stick to the porcelain with some sort of prep.  It may stick somewhat to the rust but peel/loosen all around those specific spots.

And that's not bad, I've seen considerably worse.

Maybe keep the new basket in reserve, put the original back and check it in a few years.

Don't wash in cold water, and use a proper dose of good-quality detergent.

Thanks for the reply DADoES.

I want to use the new basket even though it's damaged, because it's better than the original one, so I was wondering if I can treat it so that it doesn't rust like the original.

I'm not confident that I can get a new one that's made to last, so I think a DIY prep would be my best bet.

A friend of mine recommended this product to me for patching porcelain, he has used it on many restorations of vintage appliances and says that it holds up well. Menard's has it.

Menards did have it so I'm going to try that, thanks for the suggestion. It says you have 24 hrs to use it after mixing, so I'm going to use it on the basket, and where the paint chipped off where the bleach dispenser seats.

Glad to be of service to you, be sure to clean the piece before hand, use some solvent like acetone, brake clean, or alcohol, to make sure there isn't any kind of oily residue.
