Save them! They are worth a fortune. I went to the UPS store to buy a 12 X 12 X 8 box and I wondered why she kept holding off on telling me the price. Well, the little box was $6.25. I thanked her and said that I could not afford that. I will begin collecting them where I can, spray them with cedar oil to prevent bugs from munching on them and cut the seams so I can store them flat.  If you wonder why shipping on eBay seems expensive, consider the cost of the box alone. Amazon Prime is more and more of a bargain. Speaking of which, that has dropped from the national conversation.

I also find UPS stores and similar to be overpriced. Staples, Office Depot and the like are also a little expensive. I've found that Home Depot, Lowes, and especially Menard's have good prices and selection on boxes. I've found that for unusual sizes that a packaging distributor will have what I need at a decent price. Some of them have a minimum order, but the one I've used lately doesn't. I pick them up at their warehouse.

I have access to tons (not literally) of boxes of varying sizes via work left from drink cups, popcorn tubs, candy, and such.  Unfortunately there's no room to keep them and many aren't suitable for reuse after being torn open by the minions.  A notable specimen is a very thick/sturdy type of cardboard for cookies (four 4-lb bags per box) from an outfit in FL ... and their shipping charges are outrageous.

Try home depot. They carry a lot of different sizes and they are priced well. You might look on line for pricing.

At one time you could get nice boxes from just about any merchant-just ask-often they are glad to have someone haul away the "cardboardomite"This was especially handy for moving items you couldn't carry on the movers van.

when I need boxes of certain sizes I hit up the local liquor stores.  They usually set them out for the taking.

Do not like to store lots of paper including boxes

For fear of creating a habitat for vermin, in particular bugs (ok, roaches).

However will keep the odd few "nice" sturdy Uline type shipping boxes when they arrive.

With arrival of dimensional pricing (USPS, FedEx Ground, maybe USPS), many shippers have equally downsized boxes used to cut down on not needed space that is now costing them money. That and many have simply gone over to poly bags instead.

When people do need boxes (shipping, moving, etc...) around here they do roam streets to get at those discarded by shops before they are collected by rubbish men.

Only issue is that the homeless also covet boxes (they use them to make shelters, sleep on, etc..) so there is a keen demand.

Final worry is that there is gold in all that paper. Bands of odd men or groups drive around in busted up vans or rented trucks to get at paper set out by businesses for rubbish collection. This is illegal but apparently those bales of paper are worth big money.

On YouTube some people build "forts" out of boxes-one pair of guys built their cardboard fort in front of an abandoned Toys-Are-Us store and ordered pizzas-the pizza deleviryman brought them to the fort!He was intreuged by the fort. They bought their boxes from Home Depot along with a plastic dropcloth "roof.
