Hey Phil, one of my neighbors and a couple relatives had the Kenmore 800 sets, and that is the original design accent around the controls. I think it was meant to co-ordinate with the various colors the cabinets were made in, such as Coppertone & Avocado.

I think the design is called "tortoise shell." The LK combo from around 1969 or 1970 had that control panel background.
