Hey Gang,

Things have sure been busy here in Iowa this summer! Cory and I have spent most of the summer throwing up lumber and pounding nails at the lodge. A few weekends ago, I took an afternoon off from construction to take a drive through a small town here in Eastern Iowa to look at a 1967 Buick. While the car was a dive, I discovered this beautiful sign still hanging up on a hardware store!

Excited, I hopped out of the deVille and snapped pictures of this beautiful Frigidaire sign. It has been difficult to find any Frigidaire dealers left in Eastern Iowa, as Maytag had pretty much cornered the market. At this point I had no idea if any washers or appliances were even still around in this place.

Just as I was driving away from the store, I noticed a set of windows the second story, and this caught the corner of my eye...

I couldn't believe it - one of my dream machines - an actual AMP!!! Today, I was able to get to the store today on my day off, and met up with the owner. He was kind enough to let me snap some shots of the AMP and other Frigidaires! This machine has a rust free lid, but it appears that the cabinet will need some work ~

I had never seen the original AMP agitator in black - is this a replacement? Note the tub - yet another Maytag with a worn out tub! Geez...

Note the timer indicator is a red arrow. I've seen that Robert's machine has the same red indicators, but Bob's machine had chrome indicators. Was their a production change on this?

Anyone ever seen the Maytag emblem look like this? I'm guessing 30+ years of direct sunlight has caused this.

There was also a 1959 Custom Deluxe Frigidaire washer. I wished it was a 58, but I'll take her home anyways. Hopefully, I'll be able to pick up these great lookers in a few weeks! Till then, I'll have to make room in storage!

Now why can't the appliance stores around here sell such "modern" appliances like those pictured?

WOW, AWESOME finds Ben, especially that AMP, congratulations! Those are such fun machines and behave completely different than their later Helical Drive counterparts. One thing I am amazed by is their rock-solid suspension...you can wash half-loads in the machine, and the entire load will shift to one side and it won't even think about shaking or walking...perhaps it has something to do with the sheer weight of the machine as well! I think yours has the dry clutch (and "pinging" spin solenoid), but if you end up finding one with the oil clutch (and the loud "klunking" solenoid), those waste no time throwing the water out and getting up to speed!

Good luck!

By the way...

Is that Rollermatic a Rapidry model by any chance?

What a great place to stumble upon. So I'm assuming you are picking up all the machines you took photo's of, right? That place looks like it has all kinds of treasures lurking inside.

Congratulations Ben. Your collection continues to grow!

Wow an early type AMP with the float INSIDE of rather than a chrome cap extending over the top of the agitator. I've seen plenty of them with black agitators.

Oh and that '68/69 Rapidry Rollermatic sure looks good from the outside. In fact, those machines all look pretty good. That '64 needs a Gray, blue and green "three-ring" in it!
Certainly enough Frigidaire stuff to keep your blood-pressure elevated for months to come.

Congratulations guys!

It is so cool

When just as "you're driving away" something in a window on the second story "catches the corner of your eye".
Looks like it must have been a nice vintage appliance find
"rush"! Way to go Man!!!!

Hi Ben, a big huge congrats on the great new finds!!! I've never seen the early AMP agitator in Black before, I wonder if it is original?

Way to go! I love these machines and what a find. I am about 4 hours from you. There didn't happen to be an ABC around the place or a wringer washer? Thanks, Gary

Austin, I honestly don't know which clutch style this machine has. I was thinking it would be the early style too, until I looked at the data plate info here at the house. I took a snap of the data plate, but it came out horribly. Through the blur, I think it said GS, for 1953 - but I didn't know they made an original AMP that late? This may also explain the black agitator - but who knows! I think the Rollermatic is a Rapid Dry, at least I am crossing my fingers that it is!

Hey Patrick, I don't know if this has been previously mentioned, but I graduated high school in Fairfield, IA - just down the road - BIG Football rivals.... Washington vs. Fairfield

Steve, I wish the 64 had the correct agitator - as I've never seen a 64 with the actual correct 'three-ring' still remaining! I think my doctor may need to increase my blood pressure meds after this batch... hehe

Robert - I've never seen the early style in black either. I would imagine that it is a replacement, but why wouldn't they have replaced it with a black diaphragm version? Very interesting.

Gary - I didn't see any ABC items in this place - but I'm sure there out there! Just keep your eyes open for that ex-centric action!

Ben

Ben-----

Pass your e-mail on to Gansky so I can contact you about that "Three-Ring".

I don't know if the agitator in that AMP is a replacement or not. I do know that there were plenty of those things around Atlanta way back when, that had black agitators.

Hi Ben ...

CONGRATULATIONS on the fantastic finds! Boy, that must have taken you aback a bit when you discovered that store; how fun!

I haven't seen a black gyratator either; you've got a first!!

Ben - this is too cool! Glad to see the Frigidaires were good finds, not bad looking at all. Is the 64 a Multi-Matic or the first of the rollermatic? I read somewhere in the '64 Tech-Tips about the changeover to the Deep-Action agitator, perhaps it is original?

Didn't Maytag switch to all black bakelite gyratators somewhere in the very early 50's? Have you dated the serial number from the AMP? Time to scour those "Let's Talk Service" again!

The 1964 WCD is NOT a rapid dry. It looks like that machine has the delicate cycle where the soak cycle usually is on the bottom half of the timer display.

Congratulations Ben! What a treassure trove. In the picture of the 67-69 washer, there is a slice of what looks like an early 60s 30" Frigidaire range. If you have a chance when you go back, do you think you could snap a picture of it if you remember? That Frigidaire washer next to it had the most flexible speed selection of any of them. Normal agitate/fast spin (a little over 600 rpm), gentle agitate slow spin, Wash'n Wear is fast agitate & slow spin and that stupid Durable Press which was gentle agitate and fast spin. Good for woolens, but not much else. We had one of these and one of the 1010 spin models with three speed settings and that Durable Press was mostly good for nothing. The biggest disappointment with the space capsule style agitator was that the water jumped straight up out of the 4 openings in the top cone. The early drawings of that agitator in ads showed those 4 openings with little projections above them to direct the water sideways, but I guess they broke too easily. Somebody showed that agitator with a variable twist top (maybe in the patent of the day) that allowed for gentle or vigorous washing by opening or closing those 4 openings. I guess that was another dream that died. The water going straight up led to lots of rusting under the lid gasket; sad.

I am glad to see that you will have a dryer with an ash tray. That is what certain people thought the sprinkler drawer on the control panel of my DCI-60 was for.
